A short motivational excerpt (YouTube talk) where the speaker recounts a trainer-development participant who hits a personal/financial ceiling. The speaker advises that focusing solely on making money limits growth and recommends adopting a larger mission of serving more people, citing Buckminster Fuller’s idea that serving more people increases effectiveness across life domains.
A person in one of my recent trainer development programs stood up and asked a question. He said, I'm doing well. He goes, I'm making money. He goes, but I seem to keep hitting my head on a ceiling. I try all different strategies, and nothing seems to break me above that ceiling. I go, maybe you're looking in the wrong places for your solution. He says, what do you mean? Dr. Buckminster Fuller said that the more people you serve, the more effective you become physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually and financially. And I asked this gentleman, I said, so, what's your mission? He goes, want to make a lot of money and help people. I go, okay, good. Are you good? He goes, yeah, I'm great. I go, so let me tell you something. That that goal you have is a waste of a good mind. He looked at me like, what are you talking about? This was a quote that Bucky had used in the past. That if you're just going for money, it's a waste of a good mind. He says, what's the mission? What's the bigger. What's the bigger challenge? What is something you can take on a bigger gain?
