Blair Singer tells the story of a young man from India who had a breakthrough moment with his father, using it to explore what transformation really means. The shift wasn't about changing circumstances, but about seeing them differently.
What is transformation after all? I was doing an online program not too long ago, and a young man from India unmuted himself, saying he was very frustrated with his business. He works really, really hard. He's had some success, but he didn't think he was smart enough. As I asked him questions, turned out he said that, you know, I was eight years old, I did terrible in school. My father was always on my case, yelling at me, tell me I never amount to anything. He goes, and I hate him for that. And I worked really hard all my life to prove him wrong. I said, and. And now tears were welling up in his eyes, and I said, what's going on? He goes, he says. A bulb just went on in my mind. My father was not hating me. My father was loving me. He was doing his best whatever way he could to motivate me. And so from all of that, that's how I got here. That's how I've accomplished so much of my life up till now. I said, is your dad still alive? And through his sniffing and the tears flowing, he goes, yeah. I said, what do you want to say to him? He says, could I call.
