Tom Rosenak argues that relentless positive thinking often masks denial. Instead, he says recurring failures like not finishing classes are signals worth listening to. He proposes focusing on what you control and using generative questions to reframe problems, not just repeat affirmations.

This is the question I ask managers that consistently gets us to what we're really working on. In business and life, no matter how successful you are, how bright you are, how talented you are, you will have upsets. But it's the recurring upsets that are gold for personal transformation. Because if it keeps recurring, in my case, it was not completing classes. If it keeps recurring, then you can say, what can I change? Yes, what's within my control? And you can start living the Serenity Prayer. So the negative thinking is admitting, because positive thinking devolves into pretend. And, and I loved Zig Ziglar, but I learned that it wasn't effective. So you just smile and you say everything's positive. Well, that's why if you look in the mirror and you read Think and Grow Rich and you look in the mirror and say, I'm abundant, I'm abundant, and the mirror looks back and say, no, you're not, you're dead, bro. Then you have an argument, and the teacher told me to write 100 times, I will not disrupt class. I will not disrupt class wasn't very effective. So, so we look at negative patterns from the lens of appreciative inquiry, which I put one of the books, uh, that I recommended, uh, changed my life forever for the better. Was Jackie and Sherry, Conversations Worth Having. And they talk about generative questions and positive framing. So it isn't positive thinking, it's positive framing.
