Don't Wait, Start Now!: From Hesitation to Bold Action: How "DO-ERs Win the Day"

An author on taking action explains why waiting for the perfect time keeps you stuck in self-doubt. He turned 51, recently lost a peer role model, and argues that tomorrow isn't guaranteed, so coaches and speakers need to start now instead of waiting for conditions to be ideal.

Right. So in the first, the first one that I talked about in the book is I talked about waiting for that perfect time. And I see a lot of people because I work with so many coaches and speakers right now. There's a lot of people who feel like they can't take that first step, that action, because they're waiting to get things perfect, right? I got to have the perfect email campaign, or I have to have the perfect website, or I have to have the perfect plan in place before I get started. And so, and so that's one of the biggest habits that I see people get stuck with. So that's really why that's my first chapter is talking about that trap of waiting for that perfect time. And I like to let them know, like, it's a mistake because you're waiting instead of starting. And I've got a quote here. And where is it? It is— let's see. And then what happens is, you get good at waiting, and you get consistent at doubting. Wow. And, and that holds people back, right? That you're consistently doubting yourself. You're like, oh no, I probably shouldn't do this, or no, it's not perfect, or I need to ask such-and-such's permission. And it just holds you back. And for me, what I've realized— so I turned 51 this year. And what I realized is that I have fewer productive days left on this earth that I've already used up. And so for me, I have to break free from that hesitation of stopping myself. So I'm constantly pushing myself. Because, you know, it's like, tomorrow's not guaranteed, right? The next breath is not guaranteed. I mean, earlier this, this week, you know, we lost someone my age, you know, someone who I considered an amazing role model for me, Malcolm Jamal Warner. Um, he's, he's a dear friend of one of my mentors.
