Our goal is simple: to inspire you, challenge you, and equip you with insights that can transform the trajectory of your leadership journey. Welcome aboard to another episode of the Leadership and Success Podcast with Coach Lesson number 3: Temptation often looks like validation.

Verses 10, 11, and 12. Flattery, secrecy, and attention are common tools of manipulation. Leaders are most vulnerable when affirmation replaces accountability. Lesson number 4 yesterday was rationalization is the gateway to compromise. Verses 13 through 20. The danger is not temptation alone, but it's the story we tell ourselves to justify it— rationalization. Compromise rarely begins with rebellion; it begins with permission. And Lesson 5: Momentum can mask misalignment. Verses 21, 22, and 23. Confidence, speed, and momentum can look like success until consequences arrive. Leaders often mistake movement. Wisdom will reward those who seek her. That's verses 17, 18, 19, 20, and 21. Okay, let's listen.

I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently will find me. Riches and honor are with me. Enduring riches and righteousness. My fruit is better than gold, yes, than fine gold, and my revenue than choice silver. I traverse the way of righteousness in the midst of the paths of justice, that I may cause those who love me to inherit wealth. That I may fill their treasuries.

That I may fill their treasuries. That is what wisdom will do for you. Wisdom rewards those who seek her. So wisdom will respond to intentional pursuit, and it produces durable prosperity, trust, credibility, and peace. Things that money cannot even buy. So how do you apply that? So create rhythms for learning, No, reading, mentoring, after-action reviews. So how intentionally do you pursue growth right now? And what habits reinforce wisdom in your week?

All right, uh, I said last month, how intentionally do you pursue Growth. So this is, uh, Season 31, Episode 8. So we are studying, uh, Proverbs, uh, Chapter 8. We did this on January 8th, and today is going to be the, uh, AI recap. So we're gonna use artificial intelligence to, uh, give us a recap of what, uh, we learned on January 8th about Proverbs Chapter 8. So while you are listening and watching, please let me know where are you guys joining us from, what city and what state. And if outside of the US, which country? What are you grateful for today? And also, what are going to be the 3 to 5 takeaways from today's lesson? And most importantly, what is one principle that you're going to be able to apply today based on what you learn? All right. So for our moment of gratitude throughout this entire month, I am really grateful for Black History Month because Black History Month is American history. Black history is American history, and I am really grateful for all of the effort, all of the contribution from African Americans throughout the history of this country. And I highly recommend this book, African American First: Famous, Little-Known, and Unsung Triumphs of Blacks in America. All right, so for today, February 8th, let me share my screen. We are going to remember a couple of facts. One, that has to do with today's date, and the other one about something that happened in the U.S. military by African American— African American first. Okay, so you should be able to see my screen right now.

Let's talk about February 8th, 1968.

February 8th, 1968, that was the campus of South South Carolina State College, what happened there. So we are going to be talking about— let me make this a little bit bigger. Okay, here we go. So on this day, February 8th, 1968, white state troopers opened fire on mostly African American crowd on the campus of South Carolina State College in Orangeburg, South Carolina. What followed became known as the Orangeburg Massacre. 28 people were wounded, 3 young Black men were killed. That's Samuel Hammon, he was only 18 years old, a freshman. Henry Smith, only 18 years old, a sophomore. And then Delano Middleton, only 17 years old, a local high school student killed by white state troopers on February 8th, 1968 on the campus of South Carolina State College. Their crime was simply protesting segregation, which is absolutely a right that is covered by our First Amendment. So it is really sad that happened. 3 young Black men, teenagers, they all got massacred. So 2 days earlier, a student had attempted to desegregate a white-only bowling alley in town. When service was refused, violence broke out, injuring students and one police officer. On February 8th, students again protested, this time lighting a bonfire near campus. When police arrived armed with carbine pistol and riot guns, students began to flee. The police fired anyway. So that was again February 8th, 1968, and you can read more on my LinkedIn post. But I also want to celebrate today about African American first in the military. I call this profile in Courage, and this is about the very first student, African American student, that was accepted at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. So the honor is reserved to James Henry Conyers. Conyers is a of Charleston, South Carolina, and he broke a profound racial barrier when he was nominated by his congressman and sworn in as a cadet midshipman at just 16 years old, September 1872, only 22 years after the Naval Academy was established. So I'm gonna play a couple of videos to celebrate this. The first one is going to be about the massacre and then one honoring, again, James Henry Cornwalls, the very first African American accepted at the Naval Academy.

The situation had changed and it probably had become a little bit more dangerous. I think I said Henry. I might have gotten Henry out, but at that point the gunfire started and everybody turned around and was headed back up this way. But they were— they ended up laying all over the place out here. So some would say, "I'm hit, I'm hurt, I'm shot, you know, help me," or whatever it was. So my first inclination was— was that there was a trash can over there— was to go back over there and look and see where the police were, because if they were coming up the hill, I couldn't stay. When the shots went off, my first inclination was to do a belly flop. Let me get down. And while I'm going down, the shots hit me. See, the police were standing on the side of that hill, which means that the trajectory of the gun was about at your waist down. When I went back over there and I saw they had moved back down the hill, I came back over and I dragged some across over there to the park where the plot is, and I dragged some more over, came back and dragged some more to the infirmary. That's what we had to do at that point. And it was just chaos at the infirmary.

A ceremony honoring James Henry Conyers, the first African American to enter the U.S. Naval Academy, was held earlier today in North Charleston and Charleston with some of his descendants in attendance.

Ray Arena was there as a monument on his gravesite was unveiled.

James Henry Conyers broke the color barrier in the U.S. Naval Academy just over 150 years ago. Up until now, he had been buried in an unmarked grave with his wife in the Upper Peninsula, and today he was honored for being the trailblazer that he was. Several high-ranking military leaders gathered at the Humane and Friendly Society Cemetery near Meeting Street to honor Conyers, who died in 1935. Conyers was sworn into the Naval Academy in 1872 at 16 years old after being nominated by Congressman Robert Elliott. However, he would not finish the academy. He was hazed, abused, cursed at, spat on, and manhandled by fellow midshipmen up until he resigned from the academy in 1873. Still, the officers say he was a leader who paved the way for Wesley Brown the first African American to graduate from the academy in 1949, and others behind him.

He single-handedly broke down barriers. Not immediately, not all at once, but in a country that had just survived the ravages of a civil war, he began to lead the way by example.

We are a small family.

You enabled us to come together on this occasion from near and far, and we appreciate it, and we feel the love and support.

This monument was made possible because of the Naval Academy's alumni donating money to honor Conyers and the impact he had. In Charleston, Ray Urena, Live 5 News.

All right, I think that is a great honor, and we need to remember that name. Again, the very first African American who was admitted to the Naval Academy, James Henry Conyers. All right, so what I will do now is I'm gonna play a couple of videos all done by artificial intelligence. Looks like the first one is about 6 minutes long or so, and then the second one about 10 minutes. And then after I do that, I will play one more clip from the original broadcast on January 8th. So again, we're talking about not a religious study, but really being mentored by the Book of Proverbs, right? Seeking ancient wisdom and leadership lessons from Proverbs. And today is going to be Chapter 8.

Here we go.

In a world that's all about speed and constant action, what can an ancient text possibly teach us about modern leadership? Well, today we're diving into a fascinating source, Proverbs 8, And it suggests that true, enduring leadership isn't about chasing power at all. Nope, it's about something else entirely. Just think about the kind of leadership that gets rewarded today. The source we're looking at calls it loud. You know, it's all about fast decisions, rapid execution, that feeling of always-on urgency. But Proverbs 8 gives us this really powerful contrast: enduring leadership. This isn't about being the most charismatic person in the room. It's about discernment, sound judgment, and aligning with what's true. So how do we find this quieter, more powerful way to lead? Well, the first clue is that the answer isn't some fancy new corporate strategy or a 5-step plan you can download. It's actually a fundamental shift in how you see the world. And the source of this shift, which the text personifies as Wisdom, calling her "she," isn't hiding away. And what's really interesting is that she isn't whispering secrets in exclusive, private boardrooms. That's not where you're gonna find her. Instead, she stands at the city gates. Now, that was the ancient equivalent of our public squares, our town halls, basically our most visible places of influence. She is out in the open, right where the real consequential decisions are being made every single day. So let's get a clear definition of what we're talking about here. According to this text, wisdom is a public, accessible, and authoritative guide. It completely reframes leadership. It moves it away from just personal ambition and focuses it on aligning with a with justice and with truth. Okay, so let's dig into this. First up, we're gonna break down the specific character traits of this kind of leadership. You know, how do wise leaders actually operate day in and day out? All right, lesson number 1: Wisdom speaks publicly. It doesn't hide out in ivory towers or behind closed doors. The source uses this great military analogy: the best commanders walk the deck plates. They're visible, they're accountable, and they're right there where their decisions actually impact people. And this quote just nails it: "Being visible for the sake of it isn't enough—that can turn into negative exposure really fast. But when you combine that visibility with rock-solid integrity, that's when you start building real, lasting influence." The second lesson is just as crucial: wisdom is for everyone. Great leaders, according to this source, democratize understanding. They don't hoard information or gatekeep important knowledge. They work to make sure everyone on the team gets the why, not just the what. This quote really captures the heart of it. You see, leadership isn't a zero-sum game. When you share knowledge and empower other people with understanding, you don't diminish your own leadership; you actually multiply it across the whole team. Next up, integrity is the very language of wisdom. This means speaking plainly, without all the corporate spin and distortion. The source argues that leaders don't lose credibility from telling hard truths. They lose it slowly through a thousand little softened truths that are designed to manage perception instead of just facing reality. And this is so, so important. A lot of leaders think being direct is harsh, but this reframes it completely. Clarity isn't just effective, it's actually a form of kindness and respect. It gets rid of confusion and builds the trust a team needs to really thrive. Okay, so we know what this kind of leadership looks like, but why is it actually better? What's the payoff? Next, let's explore the currency of wisdom—the real, tangible outcomes that it produces. Lesson 4 is a big one: Wisdom outranks wealth and status. Any leader who prioritizes short-term wins at the expense of their core principles will, according to this text, eventually lose both. It's an ROI calculation, really. The long-term damage to trust is a price that's just too high to pay. This is such a powerful reflection. It really forces a leader to ask, what is my true north? Because whatever that is, whether it's profit or status or integrity, that's what's going to be steering the ship, especially when the pressure is on. And building on that, our fifth lesson is that wisdom anchors justice. The source makes this critical distinction. Authority without wisdom can turn into tyranny really fast. But when authority is guided by wisdom, you create healthy governance—what we'd call fair processes and systems that people actually trust. And that's the key. Power alone doesn't create followership. But power guided by wisdom? Well, that builds legitimacy, which is the absolute bedrock of trust and the reason people are willing to follow you. So, What are the real rewards for this intentional pursuit? They're the things money simply can't buy. Things like genuine trust, rock-solid credibility, peace, and an influence that actually endures. These, the source tells us, are the true currencies of leadership. And you know, this isn't about a one-time decision. It's about habits. Becoming a wise leader is the result of a consistent, intentional pursuit. Through reading, reflection, mentorship, and learning from mistakes. What you practice every single day is who you become. And our final lesson is incredibly practical: Order precedes execution. Enduring leaders design before they deploy. They don't just rush into action without first establishing their principles and their plan. Rushed execution, The Source warns, produces fragile results. The Source article grounds this whole idea in a simple, memorable phrase from a mentor: "Measure twice, cut once." It's just a timeless piece of advice that reminds us to invest in planning and preparation before we commit to action. Okay, so let's bring this all together. Why does this ancient text, Proverbs 8, matter so much for leaders right here, right now, today? Well, it really boils down to these 3 mandates. Leadership that's aligned with wisdom is: Number 1, intentional rather than reactive. 2. It's just, not merely expedient. And 3. It's rooted in enduring truth, not just momentary success. This is how you build something that actually lasts. And that leaves us with one final provocative question to ask ourselves: In the heat of the moment, with a deadline looming and a big win on the line, would I choose wisdom over winning today? The answer to that question might just define the kind of leader we ultimately become.

Welcome everyone! Today we're diving into some ancient insights on leadership that challenge our fast-paced, outcome-driven world. We're talking about how Proverbs 8 teaches us to lead with wisdom, integrity, and purpose. I'm excited!

This is a refreshing perspective. So, wisdom, Not just charm or raw decisiveness, right?

Exactly. It's about leadership that speaks out in public, to be where decisions affect people directly, like the city gates and crossroads mentioned in Proverbs 8. It's about visible leadership.

That visibility is critical. We often see leaders hiding behind emails or closed-door meetings. Yup.

And Proverbs 8 challenges that notion. You know, it tells us that true leadership isn't about dominating from behind closed doors. It's about being where the community is, connecting through town halls and direct engagement. Like, it's like showing up where it truly matters.

Yeah, and that ties into the idea that wisdom is not reserved for a select few, but is accessible for all who are willing to listen, right?

Absolutely. Proverbs 8 broadcasts wisdom publicly. It calls out to everyone, whether you're a seasoned leader, or just starting out. This inclusiveness is essential for real, lasting change.

And oh, it's interesting how leaders today often try to hold on to power through quick decisions instead of building trust over time.

Right. Because wisdom, as described here, isn't about just getting quick wins. It emphasizes long-term flourishing, aligning with truth, justice, and moral order. It's, um, it's like building on a solid foundation rather than chasing momentary results.

Hmm, now I've got to ask, don't you think sometimes that pursuit of enduring wisdom can slow down decision-making? In our world of urgency, where almost every decision needs to be a sprint, how do we balance that? Good point.

I mean, it's a challenge. Sure, our culture tends to prize rapid execution, But Proverbs 8 teaches us that thoughtful reflection, deliberate steps, and planning—what one mentor once put it, "Measure twice, cut once"—are what actually safeguard against fragile outcomes. Yep, I see that.

It's about sustainability. So, instead of appealing to raw power or flashy charisma, wisdom urges leaders to focus on integrity and ethical clarity, right?

Exactly. Proverbs 8 speaks plainly, no mercury spins or soft truths here. Leaders have to be direct, letting the clarity of their message, like ethical principles, resonate. Hmm, absolutely. Consistency in values creates trust.

That's crucial, trust, because without it, you're just, well, you know, exposing flaws in your leadership.

Yep, indeed. And speaking of trust, the text emphasizes leadership as a service oriented around truth. It's not about chasing power just for personal gain. It's about rewarding decisions that stand by moral values, even if they aren't the fastest route to success.

I love that idea. It reminds me of an analogy. It's like— it's like choosing a path that might be a bit longer but ensures you reach a more stable destination, rather than a shortcut that leads to pitfalls.

Precisely. And that's where leaders can really challenge their own biases. They must ask themselves, where are my decisions most visible? And is my leadership inviting trust or suspicion? That kind of self-questioning really drives accountability. Yeah, accountability is key.

And it gets even richer when you consider the lesson that wisdom is for all. How do you think leaders can democratize this wisdom within their organizations?

Well, they need to translate strategy into clear, human language. Mentor broadly and ensure everyone understands the why behind decisions. It's about building an environment where wisdom isn't hoarded but shared. Like, um, it's like making the secret sauce available to everyone in the kitchen. That makes sense.

Right, and this practical sharing of wisdom leads to wider bench strength and more resilient teams. Exactly.

And that ties into the concept that integrity is the language of wisdom. When you communicate with honesty and clarity, you not only build trust but also create a climate where justice and, um, ethical governance can flourish.

Yep, for sure. Interestingly, the input also mentions that wisdom holds a value higher than gold or status. That resonates strongly in today's business environment, where outcomes are often prioritized over principles.

Right. It's a bold statement. Leadership built on core values ends up being far more valuable than any transient reputation or fleeting power. Wise leaders earn influence over time through ethical decisions, even when it's difficult.

Mm-hmm, indeed. Now, I'm curious, how do you see this idea playing out in fast-paced industries like Silicon Valley, or even in military operations? Where time is of the essence?

Well, it can be tricky. In both fields, the race for speed can overshadow the need for sound judgment. But as Proverbs 8 suggests, showing up in the public sphere, engaging transparently, and continuing to evaluate your actions through coaching prompts like, what do my incentives truly reward, or would I choose wisdom over winning today, can help leaders recalibrate.

Yeah, recalibration is so necessary. That makes sense. It's like setting up a constant self-audit loop where you're always asking if your decisions align with your core principles.

Exactly. And not only does this build personal growth, but it also promotes a culture where collective wisdom thrives. The idea of having visible ongoing conversations, town halls, after-action reviews, mentoring, is key. Mm-hmm. Absolutely.

Speaking of mentoring, Proverbs 8 really leans into that notion. Wisdom rewards those who actively pursue it, right?

Yes, it does. Leaders should set aside regular time for mentoring, reflection, even personal reading, because these are the practices that ultimately shape enduring leadership. It's about investing in growth.

Right. That's powerful. And it also reminds us that leadership shaped by wisdom is built on strong ethical foundations. This ensures that in times of crisis or scarcity, leaders rely on principles rather than just hurried tactics. Exactly.

It's a message that leadership built on true wisdom outlasts trends. When you design policies and systems with ethics in mind, you're building a legacy of justice that reinforces sound governance. Mm-hmm, indeed.

Let's talk about the coaching prompts. They encourage leaders to question, 'Where am I moving faster than my foundation allows?' That's really a wake-up call to slow down even in a hurry.

For sure. It's almost like, um, taking a moment to pause. Yes, pausing to check if your steps are firmly anchored in first principles before scaling. A bit like checking your tools before entering a complex job, to avoid building on sand.

Yeah, it's like measure twice, cut once. I appreciate that analogy. A bit of a respectful challenge to the norm of relentless speed. Do you think some leaders might, well, resist this perspective, arguing that speed is all that matters in today's world?

Definitely. There are leaders who might say, look, in our industry, hesitation can cost us enormous opportunities. But I'd counter by saying that without a solid ethical framework, those fast wins might crumble quickly under pressure.

Mm-hmm, that's a solid point. It's a compelling debate, balancing speed with thoughtful, principled design. So, in essence, wisdom as outlined in Proverbs 8 is both a guide and a challenge for leaders to reassess their fast-paced strategies.

Exactly. It reminds leaders to be intentional, deliberate, and above all, to align with truth and service. It teaches us to lead visibly, to embrace ethical clarity, and to prioritize long-term values over momentary gains. Yep, well said.

And that alignment, leading with wisdom, is what builds trust, enhances credibility, and yields a lasting influence that no amount of power-chasing can match.

Spot on. Leaders who heed these lessons end up creating cultures of transparency and justice, ensuring that every decision is both visible and accountable. Mm-hmm, absolutely.

That's a rich discussion. So, if someone is inspired by these insights from Proverbs 8, what would be your final takeaway on applying this ancient wisdom to modern leadership?

I'd say, invest in building a foundation of integrity and transparency, always be present where it matters, and continuously question whether your actions align with the core truths of justice and service. That's how power becomes earned rather than chased. Yup, I love that.

Truly inspiring. It's a reminder that in our pursuit of success, wisdom should always guide our steps. Thanks for such a deep dive into these timeless leadership lessons.

Thanks for joining this exploration. May all leaders find the courage to lead with purpose, truth, and the kind of wisdom that So anchor reflection: clarity is kindness in leadership.

All right, lesson number 4: wisdom will outrank wealth and status.

Verses 10 and 11: Receive my instruction and not silver, and knowledge rather than choice gold. For wisdom is better than rubies, and all the things one may desire cannot be compared with her.

Wow, wisdom is better than wealth, because when you have wisdom, you can always get wealth. Wisdom outranks wealth and status. So wisdom is more valuable than gold. Leaders who prize outcomes over principles eventually lose both. So how could you apply this? Reward decisions that reflect values, even when they cost short-term gains. What are your core values? What are your principles? That's what you should live by, and that's what decision made within your enterprise or organization should stand by as well, even if it costs you in the short term. So what do your incentives—
