The life and career of General David H. Petraeus is just such a story. He was born and raised in the historic village of Cornwall, New York, a classic Norman Rockwell small town overlooking the Hudson River.— and prophetically, a mere 10 miles upriver from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Young David grew up with the guidance and support of a loving, involved mother balanced by a strong and disciplined father, a Dutch-born former sea captain, an individual who would later become one of the most storied military leaders of our time. And in 1970, at the age of 18, David Petraeus did just that. He quietly marched into the hallowed halls of the U.S. Military Academy as a member of the Class of 1974, a march that would ultimately write him into the annals of American military history. The young cadet graduated among the top of his class at West Point. General Petraeus's remarkable career has spanned spanned the gamut of military and national security assignments. Each of those assignments, and the men and women he worked with, made significant contributions—militarily and intellectually—to his personal and professional growth and to developing the man who would someday help America face the unprecedented challenges and threats of the 21st century. From Ranger School to a multitude of key staff and command positions Throughout the United States and Europe, from Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti to Operation Desert Spring in Kuwait and Operation Joint Forge in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Petraeus was being forged and refined for a major role in Operation Iraqi Freedom and the ongoing War on Terror. His decades of diverse military experience, coupled with his extensive intellectual and academic pursuits, —from Command and General Staff College to Princeton to the Foreign Service School at Georgetown. All uniquely equipped General Petraeus in the post-9/11 era to become deeply involved in all aspects of counterintelligence, counterinsurgency, and ultimately nation-building. In 2003, after 10 months with the NATO Stabilization Force,— in Bosnia-Herzegovina, General Petraeus resumed his association with and took command of the 101st Airborne Division, leading the division through fierce fighting south of Baghdad and finally leading them on the longest heliborne assault in history to the city of Mosul and the northern provinces of Iraq. It was there, after long, war-weary months of mixed and inconclusive results in Iraq that Petraeus and the 101st began to redefine America's counterinsurgency strategy and proactively incorporate nation-building as a central military mission. And given the effects of the war and the diverse ethnic mix in the region, the results were remarkable. Building trust with the people, working with and empowering local leaders, emphasizing the judicious and selective use of force, expanding the stakeholders in success, reconstructing the infrastructure and the local economy. As General Petraeus gave over his command in Iraq, Secretary of Defense Gates presented him with the Defense Distinguished Service Medal and stated that the general had, quote, "played an historic role and created the translation of a great strategy into a great success in very difficult circumstances.

Secretary Gates went on to say, "History will regard you, General Petraeus, as one of our nation's greatest battle captains." Many of the assumptions that have been given to us on which our approach was based were proving to be invalid. And it started me wondering, how in the world is this thing going to end? You know, what we were told was going to happen— these guys are going to join us, those other guys won't fight, that, you know, that— yes, we'll topple the regime but put other people in place and go home to a victory parade. I could just see already this was not going to transpire, and in a moment of candor, I said, Rick, tell me how this ends. And we had— we're both— he's a true historian, I'm a military history buff, as you might imagine. And I hearken back to General Ridgway, who, when General Eisenhower asked the Joint Chiefs— actually, President Eisenhower asked the Joint Chiefs, should— could we intervene in Dien Bien Phu to save the French? This is in '54. Ridgeway said, sure, Mr. President, all it will take is 8 divisions for 8 years. Needless to say, priced that out of possibility, and I turned to Rick and said, you know, what do you think, 8 divisions for 8 years? Actually, it took about that if you add in the coalition units, and it took longer. So, in any event, I didn't— I forgot that you're always on the record with him unless you say you're not, and That became a question that I was asked repeatedly during Senate confirmation hearings, and then even became the title of a book and something that was repeated many, many times. But Tell Me How This Ends just represented, or it was my expression of doubt about how truly it was going to end, as the optimistic scenario that had been provided to us was appearing to be And if, if we then go after the countries buying gas and oil, which we're doing now— yes, largely India and China— uh, reduce the revenue Russia gets from that, and then go after those who are providing all the components and parts and everything else for the Russian war machine, largely China, uh, you could actually increase pressure enormously on Russia. And get to the kind of agreement, a cessation of hostilities, that would be quite durable. We'll see what the current negotiations can achieve. I'd like to see them strengthened to be negotiating from a greater position of strength by doing what it is that I've advocated here. Yes, I guess I'm very, very hopeful.

This war has gone on for too long, but really impressed by the Ukraine, Ukrainian, and also, sir, thank you so much for all of your daily status update from the Institute for the Study of War.

They deserve the credit. All I do is take excerpts from it, cut and paste, and put it out. I am a member of the board. We have the Petraeus Center there and so forth, and I'm a huge supporter of and believer in the analysis, which is absolutely as forthright and objective as we can make it. Keep in mind, I don't even register to vote, much less vote or advocate for candidates.

Because I was going to respond to it this morning, but then I had to get ready for this meeting. But you talk about diplomacy matters. Right. Russia's November 24-25 strikes on the civilian arm remain central to Moscow's playbook, which is really sad. But the Pokrovsk axis and the Kutyanivka corridor highlight Russia's evolving offensive template. And then the last thing I got out of it was freedom, sovereignty, and the rules. All right, everyone, thank you for watching another episode of the Leadership and Success podcast. We are pretty much at the end of 2025. So happy new year to everyone. And we have a couple more episodes and then we're going to be starting season 5. So that is coming on January 1st. And we already have a great lineup for just the first interviews for 2026. All right, I'm being reminded, let's start with our moment of gratitude. For those who follow the show, that's what we do here every single day that we meet. We believe it's very important to be grateful, especially for our service members. As you know, about 21 service members commit suicide every day. And here we believe it's not possible to be suicidal and grateful at the very same time. So if you would maybe close your eyes, take a deep breath, Put yourself in your happy place. And one of my happy places is always by the beach. I can feel the sunlight and the light breeze and the waves of the ocean, and I feel very, very grateful. So what are you grateful for right now? I think I am grateful that I'm going to see another year. Christmas was yesterday. I'm very grateful for that, especially spending Christmas with my wife and my two kids. Nothing in the world is more important to me than my family. I don't know how many holidays and special events I've missed throughout my Navy career, but I'm really, really glad that I spent time with my family and looking forward to 2026. What a blessing it is to be alive today. So let us know in the chat what you are grateful for. So I had really an extraordinary interview with the General David Petraeus, and today will be the 10-minute AI recap. So I play a couple of clips from the interview and then I'm going to play two 5-minute AI recap, all done by artificial intelligence. And the idea is for the people who don't have the time to go through the full episode, which was Season 4, Episode 118, they can listen to this recap. And I do want to remind everybody to please follow the General on LinkedIn, David Petraeus. And let me share my screen for just a second. And I also want you guys to read the article I wrote, kind of a summary of the conversation we had, Get the Big Idea Right. That was, I think, the main message from the General. It really was a masterclass in leadership with General Petraeus. Go ahead and read the article. I think you're going to get something out of it. So this is going to be the podcast version of the recap of that article. I also want you to please consider purchasing the book, number one New York Times bestselling book, Conflict: The Evolution of Warfare from 1945 to Gaza. And I understand that the general is working on the sequel, so I definitely want to make sure When he does, we invite him back here. Okay, so I'm going to start with the first 5-minute AI recap. If you have any question for me, please type it in the comment. And also let us know where you are tuning from, what city, what state, and if outside of the US, which country. And also I want to know whatever you are grateful for today, please type it in the comment. And as you listen to the recap, Please type 3 to 5 takeaways from this episode. Okay, here we go.

So what does it really take to lead when the stakes couldn't be any higher? Today, we're going to unpack a true masterclass in leadership from one of the most influential military commanders of our time, General David Petraeus. And right out of the gate, he hits us with a pretty stark warning. If you don't get that right, all else is for naught. So, what is that? Well, it's the single most important job of any strategic leader, and it's the absolute core of what we're talking about today. And that brings us to the central pillar of his entire philosophy: getting that one big idea right. Now, this isn't just about having a plan. It's about making sure you have the right plan right from the very start. Petrea says this is the intellectual foundation for everything, and I mean everything, that comes after. If that foundation is cracked, the whole building is eventually gonna come down. And the cost of getting it wrong? It's not just some minor oopsie. It doesn't matter if you're in the military, in business, or in tech—the consequences of a bad core idea can be absolutely catastrophic, with fallout that can last for years. And this chart just drives that point home. According to Petraeus, it took the US military 13 years—13 years!—to finally land on the right big ideas in Vietnam. And by then, it was way too late. In Afghanistan, it took 8 years. You know, this isn't just a delay on a timeline. It's a tragic waste of time, of resources, and of lives—all because the initial strategy was flawed. So, how do you avoid that kind of disaster? Well, Petraeus doesn't just leave us with a theory. He gives us a really clear, actionable framework that pretty much any leader can follow. And here it is: 4 tasks that sound simple but are incredibly powerful. First, get the big ideas right. Second, communicate those ideas like your life depends on it. Third, you gotta oversee the implementation. And fourth, you have to constantly refine and adapt those ideas. This is not a one-and-done kind of deal; it's a continuous loop of strategy, action, and learning. And that communication piece? It has to be relentless. A brilliant idea is totally useless if it's just trapped inside the leader's head, right? It's gotta flow through the entire organization so that everyone, from the people on the front lines to the biggest stakeholders, gets it. That's how you get everyone moving with clarity and a unified purpose. Okay, so theory is one thing. Let's see how this framework actually holds up when the pressure is on. We're gonna look at a super high-stakes example of this strategy in action. Alright, the setting is Iraq, 2006. The country was spiraling into a brutal sectarian civil war. The strategy they were using? It was failing. Badly. Something radically different had to happen, and it had to happen fast. So, the big idea was completely flipped on its head, a total 180. The old strategy was "Clear and Leave." Basically, forces would clear insurgents out of an area, and then leave. This just created a power vacuum that the enemy would fill right back up. The new idea was "Clear, Hold, Build." This meant clearing an area, but then, and this is the key part, staying to provide security and help rebuild. It was a massive pivot from pure combat to counterinsurgency. And the result of getting that new big idea right? Well, in just 18 months, this brand-new strategy drove violence down by nearly 90%! 90%! Just think about that. A historic, life-saving turnaround, and it was directly tied to changing that one core strategy. As Petraeus himself said, "Change management can't get any bigger than that." I mean, he was rewriting the operational playbook for over 150,000 troops. Troops in the middle of a war. It's just incredible. So, we've seen the strategy, we've seen the framework. But what about the leader themselves? What kind of personal attributes does it take to actually execute something like this under that kind of immense pressure? It really starts with this mindset. Petraeus believes that life, and especially leadership, is a competitive endeavor. And he says you shouldn't shy away from that. You should embrace it. Use it to push yourself to be the absolute best. And that mindset breaks down into 4 key attributes. First, a commitment to relentless excellence. Because, as he says, nobody's impressed by someone who's proud to be average. Second, elite resilience. He famously figured out that he needed exactly 6 hours of sleep to stay sharp, and he built his whole schedule around that. It was non-negotiable. Third, a real dedication to lifelong learning. He sees knowledge as a leader's most valuable weapon. And finally, active mentorship. Because he knows no leader ever, ever succeeds alone. So if we boil everything we've talked about down, it really comes to these two foundational pillars: a personal drive for relentless excellence combined with an intense focus on strategic clarity. Getting those big ideas right. That right there is the heart of the Petraeus Model. Which, of course, leaves us with one final question, a question that turns all of this right back to you. It doesn't matter if you're leading a company, a small team, or just your own career. The first and most important task is always the same. So let me ask you, what are your big ideas?

With the great support of Secretary of Defense, uh, at that time Bob Gates, who was a great— in addition to a great strategic leader, he was a wonderful bureaucratic infighter. There he is, in fact. Uh, and also Admiral Mullen, uh, who became the chairman about 6 months into— 7 months into the Church. That's a great photo of us together there. And they— but the country recognized, the administration recognized that we were losing in Iraq, and they were really quite committed to reversing that, to turning that war around. That was a legacy item for the president at the time, and that provided us the impetus with great leadership on Capitol Hill. Senator McCain is the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee for part of the time, Senator Levin for another part. And so all of them together enabled us to do what we did, but the big idea during that time, I told Secretary Gates, look, just get us the stuff in our hands. Don't test it endlessly at Aberdeen Proving Ground. Just send it to us. Let our soldiers— as long as it won't kill somebody if it doesn't work, just send it out. We'll try it out. Our soldiers will, and if they like it, we'll get more of them. If they don't, We'll park it in the back of a combat outpost and let it rust. But that's the attitude you have to have. Now, to be fair, these were not aircraft carriers or major platforms, although some were very, very significant.

But so again, we really don't see the future of war as clearly What really stands out is how General Petraeus anchors leadership in gratitude, acknowledging that every great leader, um, literally stands on the shoulders of giants. Yeah, absolutely.

It's like he says, "Hey, recognize the sacrifices and hard work of those around you." And that isn't just lip service; it's a fundamental mindset. Exactly.

He doesn't just throw out a casual thank you; He emphasizes a deep, almost humble recognition of what it means to lead by valuing every individual's contribution.

And then there's his point about excellence. I mean, he makes it clear that leaders need to outdo mediocrity. It's like, why settle for average, right? Right, right.

He tells us that life is a competitive endeavor. So, um, if you're proud to be average, then don't expect followers to rally behind you. It's that push for relentless excellence combined with being a top-notch teammate.

Yeah, that call for excellence naturally segues into his emphasis on those big ideas.

Absolutely. He insists that getting the big ideas right is non-negotiable. Without a clear strategic vision, every other effort tends to crumble. True.

And he draws hard lessons from history, mentioning how the U.S. military took like 13 years in Vietnam and 8 years in Afghanistan to fully grasp those big ideas, which cost dearly.

Exactly. It's, um, a stark reminder. If you don't grasp the essential strategic concepts from the start, no amount of execution is going to fix that.

Mm, that framework he lays out is brilliant. The Four Tasks of Strategic Leadership. It boils down to getting the big ideas right, communicating them effectively, overseeing their implementation, and then refining them as the situation evolves.

Right on. And it's almost like a blueprint for leadership that applies across diverse fields— military, technology, cybersecurity, you name it. Definitely.

Speaking of communication, I found it so compelling that he highlights it as a continuous effort. It's not enough to set a vision. You have to keep your entire team aligned.

Yes, exactly. Imagine starting every meeting with a dose of gratitude and a clear statement of those big ideas. That kind of relentless communication can be a game-changer.

Uh-huh. And if the plan ever fails to land, then you've got no foundation to build on. For sure.

And then his insights on change management, when he talks about pivoting a full 180 degrees when crises hit, that really pushes the envelope. Mm-hmm.

I agree, but don't you think that dramatic pivoting might come off as a bit too idealistic for some sectors?

I can see that point, but I think it underscores that leading in a high-stakes environment means you must be willing to radically change course if the situation demands it. Yep, and that brings us to resilience.

His personal discipline, making sure to get enough sleep, fitting in workouts, shows that even the most strategic minds need to look after themselves. Absolutely.

It's like you can strategize all you want, but if you're running on empty, you can't sustain the performance needed for effective leadership. Right.

Now, what about lifelong learning? His constant quest for intellectual growth is fascinating.

Yes, that's huge. He's always traveling, engaging with new ideas. It's a real commitment to keeping his intellectual capital fresh.

Mm, in today's rapidly evolving world, that mindset is essential. You can't rest on your laurels.

Exactly. And tied into that is his take on mentorship. He clearly believes that no leader stands alone. It's a mutual exchange. You learn and you also give back.

Yeah, exactly. Right. And that repudiates the myth of the lone wolf leader. It's about building a network that uplifts everyone involved.

Precisely. It's this whole package of humility, strategic insight, and dedication to continuous improvement that really defines his approach.

Yeah, and let's not forget his vision for the future of warfare. The idea of shifting from a man in the loop to a man on the loop really signals a move towards embracing more automated and algorithm-driven systems. Right.

It's almost like he's saying The future is here, and it won't wait for you to catch up. It's a bold forecast that pushes us to consider innovation as not optional but essential. Mm.

Now I have to ask, do you think this futuristic view might sometimes overshadow the immediate human elements of leadership?

That's a fair challenge, but I'd argue that even as we adopt advanced technologies, the human element, clear vision, strategic thinking, and humility remains irreplaceable.

Absolutely, yeah. True enough. And reflecting on his lessons, one big takeaway is to always keep revisiting those fundamental questions: What big ideas drive your team? How do you communicate them? And how do you adapt when realities shift?

Exactly. It's like a constant self-check. If you're not clear on your core ideas, your strategy crumbles, no matter how many resources you throw at it.

Mm, and then there's that compelling notion of competing to be the best, not just individually but as a team. It's competitive excellence without sacrificing teamwork.

Right, it's a dual-edged sword. Strive for excellence and ensure you elevate your entire team along the way. Yeah, totally.

It really does paint a picture of leadership as a competitive, strategic, and yet deeply human endeavor.

Absolutely. And in that vein, it's important for every leader, be it in the military, tech, or any other field, to consistently challenge their assumptions, ask the tough "how does this end?" questions, and remain adaptive to change. Correct.

It's that reflective practice that can make or break a leader's legacy. Right.

And ultimately, it all circles back to these key principles. Gratitude, excellence, transparency in communication, and a relentless push for improvement.

Mm, and when leaders embrace those, they not only drive success but also inspire the next generation of leaders. Exactly.

It's like a ripple effect. Mentorship, continuous learning, and strategic foresight create a legacy that lasts far beyond any individual achievement.

Definitely. So in the end, these ideas are a robust blueprint for anyone wanting to lead with clarity, humility, and most importantly, vision in this fast-changing world.

that was not going to be enough. Instead, what we should have done from the beginning is what we ultimately just started to do by late 1968, which was to craft and execute a comprehensive civil-military counterinsurgency campaign with all of our forces, our Vietnamese counterparts, other coalition members, CIA development experts from the embassy, and others all working together to protect the people where they actually lived, which is mostly along the coastline, and then ensure that when the enemy tried to infiltrate there, either with insurgents or with mainline forces, that we defeated them. That would have been something much more doable. We did shift it. It made demonstrable difference. The problem was, by the time we finally got the big ideas right, when General Abrams took over in late 1968, it was really too late when it came to support on the American home front, which had given up on the war after profession that we had seen, you know, the light at the end of the tunnel and so forth, and then came the Tet Offensive of 1968, early 1968, which showed that clearly the Viet Cong and the North were by no means finished. It took us 8 years in Afghanistan to get the big ideas right, to craft the right strategy, and then another year to get the inputs right, the right— almost the right level of forces, diplomats, spies, development experts, legal expertise, and all the rest of this, and we only kept it right for 6 or 8 months, by which time we began a drawdown that we had already said we wanted to conduct, telling the enemy that our will is not absolutely steadfast,, and then drawing down subsequently at a pace that was determined more by conditions on the ground in Washington than by conditions on the ground in Afghanistan.
