A brief spoken segment arguing that artists and creatives are conditioned to fear making mistakes, illustrated by a story about the speaker's daughter being taught strict coloring rules ('three point coloring') that discourage exploration. The speakers contrast being afraid to be wrong with lacking technique, criticizing industrialized art education.
As artists and creatives, we've been conditioned to feel inadequate and be afraid to explore. Here's a quick story about my daughter that I was telling to my community today.
We shouldn't have to feel afraid about looking wrong. Adeline, our youngest, we were asking her to draw something. She's like, I'm not very good at drawing that. We're like, what do you mean? Like, who told you you're not very good at drawing that? She's like, well, I'm just not very good at doing it right. They have something in her class called three point coloring, meaning that it has to be the correct color in the lines. No white space. That's the other one. Yeah. They've industrialized the education system of the arts to create this whole deal.
It's not about not knowing how to do it right, it's about being afraid to do it wrong.
