A brief spoken monologue arguing that creativity is not mystical but difficult work. The speaker emphasizes the loneliness, uncertainty, and lack of control creators face, yet explains creators persist because occasionally their work produces a 'magic' moment for someone, which motivates them to continue.
Creativity is not magic. As much as we want to think it's magic, it's not. The truth is, making stuff is hard. It's hard to be alone. It's hard to feel like no one understands you. It's hard to feel like you're out on a limb trying to make something that you hope people connect to, and you have no idea if they will. And even worse, you have no control over whether they do. But we do it because once in a while, we make something. It does create a magic moment for somebody. So, like the guy at the blackjack table who just took his last $20 and quadrupled up, we embrace that one moment that felt magical, restack our chips, and start all over.
