How To Start Building Your Fanbase As An Artist (w. Sean Cannell)

A short interview (YouTube video) where Sean Cannell advises artists and creators on building an online audience and finding their “thousand true fans.” He emphasizes starting by creating content to learn, clarifying a niche (who you serve and what problem you solve), and maintaining a single value proposition so subscribers consistently get expected content.
We're swinging around.
Can we just do it on the way to the bathroom? Is that actually cool? So, as an artist and creative that's trying to make money doing something that they actually care about, I want you to know that you need to start by building an audience online. It doesn't need to be big if you have a thousand people that are willing to pay you $100 a year, that's a hundred thousand dollars for the things that you do. But where do you actually get started? Well, you're in luck. We're going to talk about that right now. I actually caught Sean Cannell on his way to the restroom. Yes. You heard this, right? He's on his way to the bathroom, and I can't believe I actually pulled this off. And I decided that I was gonna do a quick interview with him, try to catch him and ask him how he felt. Someone like you could go about starting to build their audience so they could find their thousand true fans. Let's cut to the interview. Well, so we're here with, as you can see, John Cannell of Think Media.
And we're in the middle of this interview, and so I just gotta take a leak. So we're gonna.
I'll follow you guys while you come to the. Like, we're swinging around.
Can we just do it on the way to the bathroom? Is that actually cool? So, Sean, I have a channel.
Yeah.
Where I talk to artists and creators.
Right.
And trying to help them find their thousand true fans. Okay. So if somebody's thinking about, okay, I gotta get started. I gotta start thinking of myself as a media company and as the man from Think Media.
Right.
What would be the biggest advice that you have for them?
Well, what I would say. I would that, first of all, if you don't have any clarity, you just got to start making stuff. You know, for the two successful YouTube channels that I do have, I actually have kind of like four that didn't fully work out. But sometimes you win and sometimes you learn. And so that was all education from just creating, like, a lot of different videos. Now, if you do know what your passion is, what your niche is, then you really just need to know two things. Who are you trying to reach, and what problem are you trying to solve for them? And so who and what? Who and what? Who and what? More than ever before, your channel needs to have a single value proposition. Never upload a video that your subscribers didn't subscribe for. So get clear on your who and what. Unless you're just in the experimentation phase and figure it out. Because clarity is power, and if you try and reach everybody, you'll end up reaching nobody.
Thanks so much, Sean, for doing that. It means the world that you were willing to take that time on your way to the job.
To hang out for a minute. Seriously, Sean's the best. One of the best dudes, one of my mentors in the online sphere, and a true awesome dude. So listen, as an artist and creative, I think that there are a few things that you should start to be doing right now, a few ways that you should start to treat yourself so others will start to treat you the way you want to be treated. And we're going to go over that in this video right here. So click over there and I'll see you in that one.
