#99 What is Full Recovery | Recovery Secrets Series
12 Feb 2026 · 48 min
In this live coaching episode of the Overcoming PTSD Podcast, host Brad Schipke and facilitator Kayleen lead a 54‑minute interactive session where participants co‑create a concrete definition of “full recovery” from trauma/PTSD. The group first shares personal interpretations of full recovery, then Kayleen outlines a set of eight (later nine) criteria that together constitute full recovery: (1) Control – mastery over thoughts, actions, emotions, and habits; (2) Energy – feeling motivated, confident, involved, and hopeful; (3) Healthy, loving relationships – starting with self‑love and extending to effortless, supportive connections with others; (4) Self‑love/internal validation – being satisfied with oneself without needing external approval; (5) Fully processed past – no longer triggered by memories, nightmares, flashbacks, or pain, and even being able to find gratitude in past experiences; (6) Freedom – freedom from internal “anchors,” the ability to pursue dreams, make choices, and live without fear or shame; (7) Free of substances – clear‑headedness without dependence on alcohol, drugs, medication, social media, or other addictive behaviors; (8) Calm – a state of peace, centeredness, and anxiety‑free presence even amid chaos. Throughout the session, participants contribute examples and affirmations, reinforcing the criteria. Kayleen emphasizes that these elements are inter‑connected like a circular set of dominoes, and that achieving any of them supports progress on the others. The episode also includes logistical announcements (upcoming 100th session, community events) and a closing invitation to coach with Brad. The content serves as a practical framework for trauma survivors and coaches to articulate, measure, and work toward full recovery.

All right, we are live here. Welcome everyone to our Recovery Secrets daily coaching call. It is so good to be here with you on this Thursday morning for me. We'll give everything a minute to connect up here. I'm very excited about today's topic. It is one that we talk about in different ways. You know, a lot of the topics, they have All these different angles. And that's one of the things I love about this group and this kind of coaching and this style of coaching is we get to cover these topics from different angles. And that's really important because we really get a wholesome view of the topic. So this topic today, we've covered from different angles. We're going to take a direct hit on this one today because it's very, very, very important. It is arguably the most important thing when it comes to recovery, when it comes to healing. So like I said, we'll give everything a minute to connect up. If you're going to be joining me live, feel free to say hey in the chat box there. Let me make sure everything is working. Here with you on this. And we will get rocking and rolling. I hope you all enjoyed your session yesterday with Ryan. I certainly did. That was a ton, ton, ton of fun to be able to have him on, and that was an awesome topic that we chatted about. So you can look forward to those every month for the next year. We have signed him on, so to speak. So we're very, very excited about working with him. He's awesome, and I'm excited for Topics coming up in the future. Now we also have some other events coming up. We just recently did a game night. We'll be scheduling another one of those. We also have a community social coming up, which I believe is next week. And tomorrow is our 100th Recovery Secrets daily coaching session. Our 100th session. So I am very, very excited for that. We're gonna do something fun. We're gonna do some giveaways. We haven't fully decided on yet, but you can look forward to that tomorrow. Morning. So good morning. It is great to have you here. Like I said, if you're here with us live, feel free to let me know in the chat box so that I can welcome you. And so that of course we can engage throughout the session here today. So this session here today is all about figuring out— make sure you can see me here— figuring out this. So we're going to be answering this question today. What is full recovery? Pretty important question, right? So for those of you who might've missed it at the very beginning of the session, I had said, This is arguably one of the most important, if not the most important thing in regard to your recovery. If we don't know what recovery is, are we going to get there? Are we going to get there? Are we going to be able to make strides and make— to get there? It's going to be extremely, extremely difficult to achieve a goal that you don't know what it is. Right now we've talked about Recovery Hero. We did an entire bootcamp on Recovery Hero. If you weren't with us for that and you're new to our program here, you can go back in the archives and you can watch that. And that is a very, very awesome boot camp. And we talk about, you know, what your future self is, which is again another angle on this. I had said at the beginning here that there's many different angles that we take with our topics. And this is an angle that is, I mean, this is direct in the topic. So today we're going to be defining what full recovery is. Now, I have a definition, excuse me, that I set out for everyone that I work with. Now, it's up to you if you want to take the full definition or if you want to make any tweaks, additions, adjustments, subtractions. To that definition or to the criteria is a more accurate way to say it. But, I like to give something because when you're in a position where you're not fully recovered, it's hard to know what you're capable of. It's hard to know what you're capable of. And so, when I was at the beginning of my journey, I had a really challenging time even thinking that any of this was possible. And so, I had to define this and Brad and I worked closely and he really helped me kind of define this because he showed me different aspects of life that I was not yet aware of or not yet comfortable with or whatever it was, right? And so, we kind of defined this together and were able to work towards achieving that goal. One of the first things I usually ask myself when there's a problem that I'm facing, it's, what's the problem? What's the problem? Defining the problem, right? We can't solve a problem if we don't know it exists. This is not all that different. It's not all that different. We need to know where we're aiming in order to get there. So good morning, Jeanette. Good morning, Sunny. Good morning, Ella. Good morning, Larry. Good morning, Judy. Good morning, Lena. Great to have you here with me. Good morning, Bonnie. It is great to have you here. You just snuck in there. He's popped up there. It is great to have each and every one of you here. My question to you is, I want you right now in the chat box to let me know, and we can adjust this as we go along today because I'm going to share what full recovery is in my eyes and what I mean when I say full recovery because this term right here, full recovery, could mean something different to me than it does to you, than it does to your neighbor, than it does to your therapist. So we really want to make sure that we define this accurately. We really want to make sure that we're on the same page. I want you to know what page I'm on when I say full recovery. So when I'm saying, hey, full recovery is possible for you, when I'm saying, hey, make sure you do your processing, we want to get you to full recovery. So you know what I'm thinking so that we're on the same page. Good morning, Mimi. So my question to you right now in the chat box there, let me know, what is full recovery? If you could sum it up. Now, we're going to give you criteria today. We're not necessarily going to do a definition. We're going to do criteria. But what is full recovery? Let me know in the chat box there. What does full recovery mean to you? And again, we can adjust this as we go along. I certainly had to adjust this many, many, many times along my journey. As I grew, I understood that different things were possible, and that was really super awesome because I was able to enhance this definition. Good morning, Loretta. Great to have you here. Lena sharing, no anxiety. That's great. That's an awesome one. Okay, so again, in the chat box there, let me know, what do you feel like full recovery is, or what, what different elements, aspects make up full recovery? What does full recovery look like? I love it. Ella sharing, learn from Kayleen. One criteria of full recovery is the past no longer affects the present. That's a great one. That's a really good summary one, right? Because if the past no longer affects the present, then we're free of anxiety, we're free of depression, we're free of anything that's coming from that past— nightmares, flashbacks, right? So Lorena sharing pain-free, the pain-free Lorena. Oh, I love that. I love it. The pain-free Lorena, right? So that's, again, we're starting to paint a picture here. What is full recovery? No nightmares, no anxiety, being functional, no fear, no permanent damage. That's awesome. I love that, Mimi. And so again, what we're doing here, even if you, if you don't have a definition offhand, I want you to think about this. There's no real wrong answers here. I'm going to give you criteria that I give everyone just to kind of show you again what I mean when I say full recovery, but there are no wrong answers here. So I want to know, what is full recovery to you? Being able to deal with things as they come up. without anything from the past getting in the way. That's an awesome thing, right? So full recovery is going to include that. That's a great, great thing. Again, there are no wrong answers. No more triggers, calm, creative at all times. That's another super, super great one. And so what I want you to see is you actually— you have some sort of definition for full recovery. But what I want you to also see is we're all sharing something just a little bit different, just a little bit different. And so, you have that answer somewhere within you and you're expressing that answer, but it's a little bit different from maybe what Bonnie's expressing or what Mimi or what Ella or what Judy. And so, it's just a little bit different, which is why it's going to be important today. And again, we've talked about this in different regards, but for me to express what I mean when I say full recovery, because we base everything around my definition, our definition of full recovery. So Bonnie sharing, when I've processed all my major traumas and I'm able to immediately recognize and process new traumas while being able to stay on track living my best life. That's a beautiful definition. I love that definition, right? Past is fully processed. As things come up, I'm handling them. I'm living my best life. I'm staying on track. Awesome, awesome, awesome. Good morning, Shamika. Being and acting exactly the way I want to. I love that one, Shamika. I love that one. Being and acting exactly the way I want. Another word that I might use for that is control. I'm in control, meaning I act basically the way that I want to, the way that I say I'm going to, and outside forces don't pull me in different directions. I love that one. Illuminating the part of my personal prism that I want active all the time. I love that. So another way that you'll hear us say that, Chamika, we'll call that Your true self, right? So there's a true you and there's a hurt you. And true you is the one that's loving and kind and calm and peaceful and happy and just really kind of all the good parts. And hurt you is the one that lashes out and the one that raises their voice and the one that throws ice cream sandwiches at their partner, whatever it is. That's the hurt you, right? So work on healing that hurt you. The way that we'll sometimes describe it is you heal the hurt you and you become a bigger, better version of your true you, which is awesome. Body sharing full recovery is also being able to have hope for the future and believe it is. It is going to get there, right? Another awesome thing, you have hope. So much of PTSD and trauma is hopelessness. So much of feeling and being stuck is a lack of hope. If you have hope, you're going to take actions because you believe that there's something different out there. You believe that there's a better future out there. If you believe there's a better future, then you also are going to believe that there's a way to get there. There's a future out there for you. It's waiting for you. So you're much more likely to take action if there's hope. Love it. Happy Thursday. Great to have you here. Pat sharing old unresolved issues have been healed and a lifestyle of how to process is implementing as things in life come up for ongoing healing. I love it, Pat. A life of authenticity, peace, joy, and love. That is awesome, pal. So again, you can see that we all kind of have a definition, but these definitions vary from each other and they have some main concepts. And that's kind of what we're going to talk about today. when I share my definition and my criteria here, but they're all a little bit different. So I'm really glad we're having this session so to help you define what full recovery is, what full recovery looks like for you, and to make sure that we're all on the same page when we're talking about full recovery. That's awesome. Bonnie sharing, my past is no longer a part of my present except for the good memories. My broken relationships are mended. Another great item there. So what is full recovery? Mending of relationships. Past no longer affects my present. No anxiety, no triggers, right? Or anything that comes up from the past. A life of— I love that one, Pat— authenticity, peace, joy, love, control, right? Good morning, Lisa. So the question is, for those of you who haven't answered it, what is full recovery to you? And again, I'm going to define mine here. What is full recovery to you? Let me know in the chat box if you haven't already. For those of you who have amazing, amazing definitions, amazing job. Maybe I love this one, feeling good, feeling good. So I'm going to give you some criteria to help you craft your definition and also in a way simplify these definitions because again, they have a lot of core elements and that's what we're going to talk about today. Okay. So let's talk about some core elements of full recovery. Now we like to do this in a way where we have core elements because again, it simplifies, simplifies. Tracy sharing, being my best self. I absolutely love it. Being my best self. It's a super thing to want to be. Okay, so the first one here— let me make sure, yeah, you can see me here. So the first one here is going to be control. What do we think? In the chat box there, let me know. What do we think we want control over? What do we want control over? Let me know. Control. Really important. Now, we already had someone share something like this, right? I forget who it was. Okay, okay. So Shamika, you've, you've already defined this. And again, here is what we're talking about here is everyone has a slightly different definition, but we're going to break down the elements here. So again, so we're all on the same page. And also so you know what's possible. For a lot of people, we'll do these definitions and they might not have thought that was possible or they might not think that's possible. And my very broad but very meaningful statement to you is all of this that we're going to define is possible for you. You're very, very capable of achieving All of these things and then some. So this is what we'll sometimes call the standard for what we hold when we're talking about full recovery, when we talk about our programs and our coaching. This is where we want you to get, and it's super, super awesome. So control, what do we want control over? Awesome, awesome, awesome. So I love it. So Kim sharing, living from my highest self, another great one in regard to what is full recovery. And then in regard to control, right?
Yeah.
Mimi sharing my life. Lisa sharing self. Kim sharing our reactions. Jeanette sharing self. Bonnie sharing emotions and reactions. Lorena sharing every part of ourselves. Lisa sharing self-control. Judy sharing emotions and actions. Teresa saying emotions. Ella sharing control of thoughts, reactions, habits, environment, things that we're able to influence. Mina sharing thoughts, emotions, and life. So things that we're able to influence. So you want to have full control, full control over your thoughts, actions, emotions, habits. So that's how we break it down. That's how we break it down into pieces, right? Thoughts, actions, emotions, habits. So thoughts, actions, emotions, habits. Okay, so we want control. Now, if we have control over— excuse the handwriting here— thoughts, actions, emotions, and habits, what do we have control over? What do we have control over? It's like a mic drop. What do we have control over? If we have control over this— thoughts, actions, emotions, habits— we have control over everything. Everything, right? You have control of yourself, of the things that we can control. If you control your thoughts, you control your self-talk. Control your emotions, you control your reactions. If you control your habits, you control your future. If you control your actions, you control the outcome that you get. Everything, everything, everything. So control is number one. Okay, so that's the first element, right? And that really does sum up to you have control over your life. Now, what else does full recovery look like? And this is an interesting one to kind of put second here. Energy. Energy. I want you to think about somebody who is— somebody who's really hurt, somebody who is depressed, and what their lifestyle looks like. What does it look like? I want you to just, just imagine that, right? Imagine maybe a time where you've been Down, depressed, isolated. What does it look like? What is it missing? It's missing these 2 elements, right? Because it's the opposite of full recovery where you're not recovered, right? So, it's missing parts of these elements at the very least, but there's a lack of energy, right? There's a complete lack of energy. And so, full recovery, when we talk about full recovery, and this is one of the— you can use these as, these are my goals, and you can also use them as indications that you are moving in the right direction and eventually get to the point where you're fully recovered. So when you get to the point where you are energetic, right? So you feel motivated and confident and involved in your life and in your community. Motivated, confident, involved. I want you to think about those 3 words. Motivated, confident, and involved. Interesting thing to put confidence under energy, right? Interesting. Another word we wanna use here is hope. You feel hopeful. You feel motivated, confident, involved. Hopeful, right? So let's put those up on the board. Motivated, confident, involved, hopeful. Energy. That's what energy means when we're defining it here, when we're defining it in our definition of full recovery and our criteria for full recovery. You're motivated, you're confident, you're involved, you're hopeful. What are you motivated about? What are you confident about? What are you involved in? What are you hopeful about? Let me know in the chat box there. Let me know. Awesome. Bonnie's sharing you can control your energy by your thoughts, inputs, and actions. A lot of these things are, I hate to call them dominoes because it's not, they're not in a line here. They're in a circle. Imagine you have a circle of dominoes. A lot of these things, one is going to affect the other in huge, giant ways, right? So Bonnie's sharing, okay, control is going to help us with that energy. Absolutely. Absolutely. So that's the second one, energy. So control, you have full control over your thoughts, actions, emotions, habits. You feel energetic, you feel motivated, confident, involved, and hopeful about your life, hopeful about the future, involved in your community, involved in your life. So again, I want you to think about, and I know Kim answered this in the chat box there, somebody who is, someone who is the lack of or the opposite of fully recovered, someone who's depressed. Are they involved in their life? They're not even involved in their personal life. I'm not necessarily talking about, although it's included in here. I'm not necessarily talking about being involved in your community and volunteering and helping out and going to community events or voting or anything like that. That first has to start with, I'm involved in my own life. I'm involved in my own life. I care about my own life. I'm taking care of myself, taking care of my environment, my surroundings, controlling my thoughts, my actions, my habits. Right. And so, a couple answers here to the question of, What are we motivated about? What are we hopeful for? Right? So, accomplishing lifelong goals. I love that one, Shamika. Larry sharing. Sorry, Larry. Being fully engaged. Right? Teresa sharing. Moving forward is my motivation. That, I mean, that's great. Again, these things are going to kind of like fall on top of each other. And then Mimi and Mimi sharing. I have more energy since doing the program for one year now. Right? The the energy is amazing. It's really super amazing. A lot of people think I'm. Incredibly energetic. And that is true, right? I'm not going to deny that I'm an energetic person. However, I wasn't that when I wasn't fully recovered. That energy comes with that healing, and that's physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, all sorts of different types of energy. Being in the program and working on self-development motivates me to keep improving. That's awesome, awesome, awesome. Okay, so energy is the second one there. Now, the next one, maybe my personal favorite, to be honest with you, is healthy, loving relationships. Healthy, loving relationships. Now, when I use this word relationships, what do you think I mean? What do you think I mean when I use the word relationships? What do I mean by this? Important thing that we define different characteristics within these criteria here. So what do you think when I, when I say the word relationships here? Nice, Lorena. Nice. Very, very good. Joe, good morning. Nice, Teresa. Nice, Bonnie. Barbara, nice. Jeanette, awesome. Ella, nice. Okay, right. And so when I say relationships, really what I'm looking for here— there's different types of relationships. A lot of times when we think about relationships, we will initially think about some sort of romantic partner or family or friends. But what's the most important relationship in your life? Now, some of you have said it. What's the most important relationship in your life?
My husband.
What needs to come first? Always. We'll give a minute. Nice, Lena. Nice, Teresa. Nice, Jeanette. Nice, Bonnie. Nice, Pat. I love it. I love it. Yourself. Nice, Shamika. Yourself. You. You. You. Okay. So when I'm talking about here in regard to defining full recovery, healthy, loving relationships, what that means is with yourself and others. So yourself, that needs to come first. You need to come first. So loving, effortless relationships with yourself and the people that you love. So this definition can go even further, and we're not gonna go really super far on this, but we want successful, effortless, loving relationships with yourself and the people that you, that you love and that you care about right now. Ella mentioned respect. I'm seeing respect in one of Bonnie's comments here. That's gonna be an element here, and we can do entire— I mean, we can do weeks and weeks and weeks on Relationships, right? But effortless, successful, loving relationships with yourself and the people that you care about. When you learn how to love yourself and it becomes habitual— and again, part of this is going to come with healing, and you're going to see how these fall kind of on top of each other and relate to each other and are dominoes that knock each other down— it becomes easy. It becomes part of who you are, and it becomes easy To then go out and have other relationships as well. It doesn't mean that there's gonna be no work in getting to this point, but you will get to this point where they're successful and they're effortless because of the work that you've done. And that's a really, really cool thing to get to. And again, we, we can define this further and further and further and further, but most importantly, when I say relationships, it's focused around you. It's focused around you first.
Okay.
Now, with that in mind, with that in mind, next thing is one of my favorite things, self-love. You love yourself for who you are and you are internally satisfied with who you are, with yourself. What does that mean to be internally satisfied? You love yourself for who you are. You are internally satisfied. What does that mean? Let me know in the chat box there. What does that mean to be internally satisfied? Joe, today's topic is defining full recovery. What is full recovery? That's the question that we're answering here, and we're giving different criteria for what full recovery is and really what I mean when I say full recovery. So in regard to self-love, right, Barbara sharing at peace with me, Ella sharing full acceptance of self, right? Those are awesome. So to fully accept yourself and to be internally satisfied. I love that word peace, Barbara. That's awesome. Fully accepting and loving yourself as you are. Happy with who you are without thought of what others think. That's what I'm looking for, Judy. Nice. You carry no regret, guilt, or shame. You respect yourself and have confidence in your decisions. Awesome. That's going to be elemental in that internal satisfaction. Acceptance and understanding, giving yourself the same amount of open mind. That's an awesome one. We'll talk about a lot of times when we talk about self-love We'll talk about how you treat others, how you would treat a pet, how you would treat someone on the street, just a stranger at a grocery store. You know, a lot of times that we are much kinder to others than we are to ourselves. We wanna make sure that we are kind to ourselves. We love ourselves. We're internally satisfied. But I wanna go back to what Judy said here. We are happy with who we are without thought of what others think. If we are internally satisfied, follow me here. If we are internally satisfied.
Mm-hmm.
We don't need external what? If we are internally satisfied, we don't need external what? Fill in the blank. Nice. I'm loving these answers for this. Jeanette, great job. Teresa, great job. Bonnie, nice. Nailed it. Crushed it. Shamika, nice. Jeanette, great. Loretta, awesome. Ella, awesome. Beautiful. Fantastic. If we are internally satisfied, we do not need external Validation. We're self-validated. It doesn't mean that that doesn't feel good. It doesn't mean that it's not icing on the cake. External validation is just that. It's icing on the cake. Okay? Best part of the cake, in my opinion, is the inside. Okay? I'm not an icing person. External validation is going to be icing on the cake, or it's going to be the decoration on the cake. But we have everything that we need internally. Okay? And that's how we're defining this criteria here of self-love. You don't need external validation. You're internally satisfied. You are good with you. You are so good with you. And what's cool about this is when you are internally satisfied, when you love yourself at this level, what happens is people, relationships around you actually start giving that validation because you gave it to yourself. I want you to try this. I want you to try an experiment in your life. Maybe you live with people, maybe you have kids, a partner, or I don't know, friends that you're hanging out with, coworkers. I want you to do this experiment where you do something and you cheer yourself on. Maybe if you're at work, you throw something out in the trash and maybe you make it, maybe you don't. And you're like, you got this, Kay, or go Kay, or obviously don't say go Kay, say your name, right? And say, you've got this, right? So it's Mimi, awesome job, Mimi. You got it. Crush that. Maybe you're golfing and you have a good shot and you're like, good job, Kay. I want you to say that out loud with people around that can hear you. And I want you to watch what happens all the time is that people will mimic that. They will parrot that. Almost every time I do that, if there's somebody else around that hears me, they say the same thing or something similar. If I'm golfing and I have a great shot, I'm like, wow, good job, Kay. They're like, nice shot, Kay. That was awesome. Good job, Kay. Right? Or I'll be walking around the house and maybe I just made a good meal. I'm like, awesome job, Kay. Brad'll be like, good job, Kay. And it comes very naturally. It happens with friends, it happens with family. I cheer myself on and others cheer me on. And I'm not cheering myself on so they cheer me on. I'm cheering myself on because that's how I talk to myself. And sometimes I do that conversation out loud. So that's my just fun little side experiment for you. Do that around people. See that most of the time that's what happens. And that's what happens when you are internally satisfied, when you love yourself. That will bring in a lot of external validation, which again is just icing on the cake, but it's gonna bring it in and it's, it's a, a really, really cool thing, but it's not necessary, which is really super nice. Okay, so that's the next one. Next one, probably the, the most obvious in when I asked you the question to define it at the beginning, the one that came up the most, which I'm really super, super happy about. Is this one? Past is fully processed. Past is fully processed. What does that mean if your past is fully processed? Your past is fully processed. What does that? Amazing job so far with this session, everybody. You guys are crushing it. I'm super proud of you. I'm super happy for you. I'm glad that we are having this conversation. I'm glad that we're defining that. You all are doing amazing, amazing coming up with these answers and and with this engagement today. It's awesome. So what does it mean if the pa— your past is fully processed? Let me know in the chat box there. I'm gonna condense these because I'm running outta room. I'm loving the answers I'm seeing. I'm loving it. So what does it mean when your past is fully processed? Let's see what we got here. We're gonna sharing pain-free. Pain-free. That's awesome. Pat sharing no triggers, no hurt when memories come up. That's awesome. We're gonna sharing and no more triggers. Pat sharing, not that memories don't come up, but they don't hurt, which is an interesting way to describe it, right? That's awesome. You don't forget these things. You know, we're not brainwashing you and it's not like they never happened. It's It's not like they weren't meaningful. They just don't hurt. They don't continue to cause that turmoil and pain. I love that, Pat. I love how you're saying this. Past has no more hold on me on how I feel about myself. No more triggers I have to let go. No more hold on me. Sometimes when people will describe PTSD, they will sometimes describe it as an anchor holding them down, holding them in place. And this would be the opposite of that. Past fully processed, fully ensuring freedom, which is awesome. We're actually going to get to that. Theresa sharing no anxiety. Mimi sharing live life fully, which I love it. Shamika sharing no triggered episodes, free and unchained. Jeanette sharing no triggers, self-control at all times, feel good about self. That's awesome. Judy sharing the past doesn't have to have control of you and you can separate the good from the bad without it being tangled together and in control of you. I think that's an awesome one. I think what you're stumbling on there from my point of view is actually more of Logic, like able to think logically, to think logically, maybe even sequentially, right? So I'm able to untangle these things. They're not so tangled and confusing and murky. It's awesome. I love it. Joe sharing the traumas don't control your reactions in life. That's an awesome one. Teresa sharing no fear. Bonnie sharing, I can also now find some gratitude in some of the painful past. That's awesome. That is absolutely a result of having your past fully processed. Because that's cool because it's not just the lack of bad. It's also the addition of good, which is a pretty neat thing. So Ella's sharing, as Kayleen said, I'm reiterating, when the past is fully processed, it no longer affects the present, as in affecting self and relationships, right? So it no longer affects the present. So you never get triggered by your past, right? It doesn't come up. Your past doesn't come up. Now, again, I love what I think it was Pat— give credit, right? Yeah. That was sharing. It's not, it's not that these things didn't happen. It's not that these things cease to exist. We can't take an eraser or a whiteout and go in our brain and white it out or erase it. It's not, it's not about erasing it. We're not trying to erase it. We're trying to process it. That's what we're doing. We're processing it. Okay. And that's awesome. Awesome definition. So that's what it means. You no longer get triggered by your past, right? So there's no negative emotions. There's no anxiety, fear. I loved these answers. Nightmares, flashbacks. Your past doesn't come up in that way. There's no pain associated. It doesn't negatively affect your present. What Bonnie was sharing about, I can now find gratitude in some of the painful past. What can happen and what very often does happen, and you don't have to set out with this goal in mind, is not only does it not negatively affect your present, so your past will no longer negatively affect your present, but what happens oftentimes is your past will actually positively affect your present. And I speak very highly of this. Again, it doesn't have to be your goal. It does not have to be something that you're aiming for, but your past positively affecting your present. I'm really grateful. that I have the tools and the skills and the knowledge that I have right now. And I wouldn't have had that without the past, without those situations. Awesome. I also have much more awareness when something new comes up before it becomes a problem. I love it, love it, love it, love it, love it. Okay, so past is fully processed. Oh, here's another one. Ella, this is a great one. So same thing in regard to triggers. You no longer get triggered. Triggers don't come up. Ella's sharing hypersensitivities are gone when the past is fully processed. Absolutely. So, hypervigilance, that jumpiness. I used to be able to jump if, I don't know, somebody dropped a pen or something. I would just jump through the roof basically. Now, and this is a little bit of a different example, but I can be sleeping and we have doors in this condo that are so sticky and so they're extremely loud to open and the doorknobs don't really work. So you have to turn the doorknob like 4 times sometimes to get the latch to do its thing, and then you have to push the door because it's sticky. It's extremely loud, and it, it can— it could be extremely jarring to hear someone like kind of jiggling that handle to, you know, to get the door to open. And I can sleep straight through that, right? And that there's no startling in regard to that. So that's a really cool thing. So pass is fully processed. Now, next one here. Is freedom. Now we have a couple that are pretty similar here, back to back, but freedom. So I think it was Delaine that just said freedom for a past that's fully processed, which is interesting because you just stumbled on the next criteria that we have here, right?
Was it?
Yeah, it was Delaine. Nice. So what do we think we mean by freedom? What would freedom mean to you in this case? In this case. Learning from and utilizing the experience to help self or others for the better. That's a beautiful outcome of going through all this, and it really is. And again, you don't have to start at that point. If you had come into me at rock bottom and been like, hey, listen, in 15 years you're going to be so grateful you went through this experience, we would not have been friends if you said that at that moment. Joe's sharing, we are who we are today because of the past. Absolutely. Larry's sharing, freedom from anchors. Love it. Pat, nice job with these. Pat sharing, free to be yourself and live your potential. Free to do what fulfills you. Free to pursue what you want. I love it. Barbara sharing, making good choices for myself. Joe sharing, freedom to be who we are meant to be. Amy sharing, freedom is not being scared to get out, as an example. Yeah, you're literally free. To live fully with no regrets, no pain or fear. Right? You're free. You're full. Or rather, you're free to do what fulfills you. It's an amazing, amazing thing to have that freedom. You're free to pursue, pursue the things that you want. I love it. Sharing freedom from opinion of others, self-actualization, right? Which also we kind of COVID here. So you can see that these definitely fall on top of each other. They're not necessarily independent of each other. And so you'll see as you continue to heal your— and the pillars that we work with and the content that we work with within the program, are hitting on different parts of these. And so we might be hitting on this one session and this another session and this another session. We're hitting on all these different parts of these things, and they're all going to come together. I love it. Making good choices for myself. We have no fear. We don't carry a weight of shame and regret. Awesome, Bonnie. I love it. Feeling not tied down by anything. Absolutely. To live fully with no regrets, no pain or fear. Jeanette's sharing freedom from opinion. I already shared that one. Awesome job, Jeanette. Bonnie's sharing free to dream and believe in those dreams. I love that one. I love that one. Free to dream and believe in those dreams and then free to pursue those dreams. Those are all different ways that we can use this word freedom and we mean all of those things. I love that, Bonnie. Free to dream, free to believe in those dreams, free to pursue those dreams. And free to achieve those dreams. Ella's sharing freedom within myself, able to accomplish all I set my mind to. Freedom from reactions towards others' negative negatives. Get the bullseye off my back. Right. You're, you're free. And again, you can see how this is also stumbling upon this, this control. So I'm free to, I'm free from others' reactions. I'm free from my own reactions of reacting to something rather than responding to something. I love it.
I love it.
Awesome job. Okay, so that's freedom. Now here we go. Free of substances. One of our last ones here. Our last ones here. Free of substances. Now this is something that I'm defining. Okay? I want you to take your own definition of this. Okay? What do you think that I mean by this? And again, you don't, you don't have to take all of this. When I say full recovery, this is what I'm talking about. There's a reason, and it's because it's all possible. You can take bits and pieces. I encourage you to take all of it if you don't have a definition of full recovery, because again, this is all possible for you. But again, you have to make your own decision based on what's going to work best in your life. But this is one of my ultimate goals for people, free of substances. What do I mean when I say substances? Let's get some examples of substances, maybe some substances we're not Free from now. Larry's sharing negative substances. I love it, right? Absolutely. I mean, also, what substances do you want to be free from? That's a good way to answer this question as well. And so the kind of— to define this part of the criteria, what we're talking about is you feel clear-headed and you don't need to depend on substances to feel well. So you feel clear-headed, you don't need to depend on Substances to feel well. So some examples of substances: food. That's an awesome one, Mimi. That's a great one. Substances, we could replace that word with the word addictions. Okay, so free of substances. Maybe that's food, drugs, alcohol, pornography, TV, video games, spending, alcohol. What did we miss? Anything you're addicted to. It doesn't matter what it is. Substance, it could be mental health medication. Now I'm not necessarily saying you're addicted to it, right? But if that's a goal that you have to be off of that medication, that's a completely achievable goal, right? So free of depression, anxiety medication, free of any sort of substance you depend on to feel well.
I love it.
Awesome. Oh, that. Oh, that. I missed that one, Delaney. Nice one. Social media. That's another great one. Again, it can be anything here, but you no longer Need to depend on things to feel well. You feel clear-headed. You're good on your own. You don't need those things. Love it. Awesome job. So Lorena sharing, anything you're addicted to. Absolutely. Bonnie sharing, no longer numbing myself daily with wine, which is awesome. No longer taking handfuls of mental health medications. That's awesome. Awesome. Awesome.
Awesome.
You are you. You are you. And I don't wanna get too deep into the medication conversation. But what is medication doing? You get prescribed an anti-anxiety, an antidepressant. What is it doing? It's helping you cope with the issue. It's not going to solve the problem. It's not going to solve the problem. Advil is helping you cope with an issue. Not necessarily a bad thing, right? You're in a little bit of pain, you're a little sore, whatever it is. You have a headache, you have a toothache. It's not going to solve your toothache. It's going to make it a little bit easier to deal with, right? So again, you're free of substances. That's another thing that we talk about when we talk about Full recovery. Nice, nice job. Ella sharing personally freedom from 25 milligrams or 0.25 milligrams. Sorry, Ativan. Awesome goal. Love it. Joe sharing free of alcohol, drugs, both legal and illegal, from needing an adrenaline rush, etc. That's awesome. Delaine sharing alcohol, social media, TV. Jeanette sharing internal supply only. Should we be sharing nicotine? Bonnie, I love that, right? It puts a bandaid on it. You you you take Advil. You take some sort of mental health medication. You take whatever it is. It's a bandaid. It's a Band-Aid. Those things are not solving the issue. I'm not going to say they don't help. For some people, they do help. For some people, they actually make things worse. I'm not saying they don't help. Just like Advil, sometimes it touches the pain, sometimes it doesn't, right? But it is a Band-Aid. It's a Band-Aid. There's nothing wrong with putting a Band-Aid on, but we want to make sure that we're also dealing with the cause. And that's what we're dealing with all of here. So I love that goal. She's sharing freedom from shopping. That's an awesome one. Oh, I love this, Bonnie, right? So, freeing from wanting others' approval. That's a great one.
Nice.
Joe sharing, prescriptions cover up symptoms but don't get rid of the root cause. Exactly. Awesome job. Nice. So, free of substances. Okay, and then the last one I have here. So again, free of substances, just to kind of sum up there, feel clear-headed and you don't need to depend on substances to feel well. Last one I have here is calm. Calm. I love that one. I love this one. This is maybe my favorite one. This is the one that I initially was aiming for. I didn't know what I was aiming for. I didn't know that all these things were possible. So this is what I was going for in regard to full recovery. What do we mean by calm? What does calm look like? Let's give some examples. What would calm look like? Let me know in the chat box there. What would calm look like? And again, all these things together, all these things together are full recovery. When I say full recovery, This is what I mean. You're in control of your thoughts, actions, behaviors, habits. You have energy, healthy relationship, self-love. You don't need external validation. Your past is fully processed. You don't get triggered. Freedom. You're free to do what fulfills you. You're free to pursue those things. You're free of substances. You don't need those things to feel well. And you're calm. Calm. Oh, I love this one. This is, again, one of my favorites. They're all super duper good. Lara's sharing, not frantic. That's a great definition of calm. That's a great one. You're relaxed, you're at peace, you are anxiety-free. Now, we've shared that again a couple of times in these different elements that we've talked about. Anxiety-free, no anxiety. We talked about that here. We're talking about that here. Feel at peace, anxiety-free. Feeling peace even in the middle of chaos. Judy, that is the ultimate, the ultimate, I hate to say test, but the ultimate indication When you have all these things and there's chaos and you are able to maintain all these things, you're there. You are there. So in the midst of chaos, you can be at peace. You're free of substances. You're calm. You have freedom to do what you want. You're in control. You still have that energy. Nothing's being taken from you. You are so whole. When you get to full recovery, you are so whole. You are so whole. And I'm not saying you're not whole now. I know it's not a perfect use of the word whole. But you are so whole, your cup is so filled and overflowing that you could be in the midst of chaos or a stressful situation and still have all these things. Awesome. I love it. Ella sharing centered. That's a great way to describe it. So you're at peace. You're not, you're, excuse me, you're at peace. You're not frantic. You're centered. Bonnie sharing, and this is another good indication. That's beautiful. Bonnie gives me a Really good idea in regard to how we can define these with examples in the future. So Bonnie sharing, I'm now able to sit on my porch for several hours enjoying the world around me at peace and not stressing over what I should be doing. I can just appreciate being alive. You can just be. That is a beautiful example of achieving this and a lot of other things, but a beautiful example of achieving this. You can be at peace. You can be, period. You can Be. That is a great example because you have self-love, right? You're internally satisfied. You have freedom to just be. You're free of substances. You just are calm. If you're at that point, probably your past is fully processed, or you're, you're getting to this, right? You, you have control. You're just, you just are. That's awesome. I love that, Bonnie. Joe, another great definition here, sharing calm equals not triggered, happy all on own. Happy on your own. That's another way to say kind of what Bonnie said, right? Just, you can just be, just be happy being. That's a great indication of some of these things. Theresa sharing, no stress. I love it. It translates to my brain as no static and focused. Awesome. Awesome. No brain fogginess. Just there. Just there. Bonnie sharing, I can go to sleep at night and not have my mind swirling with all the things undone. It's okay. That's awesome. That is awesome. That's another great example of that calm, of that peace. Okay, so this is what we talk about, or rather, this is what we mean when we say this, when we say fully recovered, when we say full recovery, when we say we've reached full recovery, you know, I'm fully recovered. When we say, you know, that's the goal that you're aiming for, it's all of this control, energy, healthy loving relationships, self-love, fully processed past. Freedom, free of substances, calm. That's a lot for just saying 2 words. That's a lot those 2 words encompass. But these are the criteria that I want you all to aim for because you are so, so capable. And this is what we mean, again, when we talk about full recovery. So amazing, amazing job with this session. If you have any questions, feel free to ask and we can, of course, answer those questions. But amazing, amazing job here. Thank you so much. For being here, thank you so much for the engagement. I want you to pat yourself on the back for being here, for taking this time for you to learn, to enhance yourself, to work more towards this goal. Amazing, amazing job! Do not forget to celebrate that. Celebrate yourself. Celebrate yourself. Love yourself. Appreciate yourself for taking this time. Love it, Jeanette. Awesome. Jeanette sharing others cannot shake my equanimity. I am grounded in peace. I love it. Awesome job. So again, if you have any questions, feel free to ask on our topic of what is full recovery. I hope we answered that today. It only took 54 minutes to answer that question, but a very important 54 minutes, because if you don't know what full recovery is, it's going to be really challenging to get there. It's awesome that we're in this together because we're going to be giving you actions to help you achieve these things, even if you can't define it for yourself. But I want you to see where you're going. I want you to know what you're capable of so that you can express it to yourself, most importantly. If you need to express it to others in your life to make sure you're on the same page, some people will like to have this conversation with, if they work with some sort of professional or clinician, maybe it's a therapist or a psychiatrist or anything like that, and just explain that goal. When you're sitting down and if you're getting that extra help, explain that goal. My goal is To be fully recovered. Well, they might have a different definition. I've sat opposite a lot of people where I said, hey, I want to be fully recovered, and they're like, okay, and they said yes to that, and then we defined it, and I defined it similarly to how it is here, and they said, oh, well, that's not possible. Full recovery from PTSD means you learn how to cope with it for the rest of your life. That's not what I'm talking about. So you want to make sure you're on the same page with anyone in your life that is important or involved in your recovery. Again, this is a great conversation to, to have and to be able to define it for yourself is awesome. So amazing, amazing job. Awesome. I'm so glad you guys enjoyed today. I enjoyed today.
