Children with ADHD receive at least 20,000 more negative messages before age ten than neurotypical peers, creating what the speaker calls "emotional poking." This repeated feedback that they're wrong or broken follows them into adulthood and can become trauma.

One major aspect of ADHD is that a lot of times it's trauma-based. And some of that trauma comes from what I'll just call emotional poking. For instance, most children with ADHD before they are 10 years old receive at least 20,000 more negative messages about themselves than children who don't have ADHD. They're misunderstood by their peers. They're teased. They're poked at. They're told they're wrong for the way they do things. And that is constantly pressing on them day after day. And by the way, after you're 10 years old, it doesn't end and it continues throughout your entire life. So let me know in the comments if you identify with this, if this has happened to you, and you can also feel free to share some of your story if you'd like to do that also.
