After being rejected for speaking slots and low-level fund positions, the speaker built his own conference, Fund Launch Live, which drew 2,500 attendees, and launched his own investment fund. In five to seven years, both succeeded, showing that creating your own platform beats climbing a traditional corporate ladder.

So it's funny, a lot of the decisions I made to launch Fund Launch Live, to launch my own fund, was because of rejection that I had received earlier. I was rejected multiple times to speak on stages, and I was told at different funds, hey, you can come work for us, but you're gonna be a low-level employee, and maybe in 30 years you can work your way up to running a fund. And funny enough, I just said, you know what, instead of trying to work for somebody else and work my way up the ladder, I'm just gonna go build my own event with 2,500 people, and you guys can apply to speak at my event. Or I'm gonna build my own fund, and you guys can apply to work for my fund, and I'll approve you or not approve you to work for me. And lo and behold, 5, 7 years later, both of those things actually worked out pretty cool, and for me, it's been a lot easier to build something than to work my way up the corporate ladder to the top over 30 years, and it's a lot more fun, rewarding, and I learned a ton from doing it.
