After 2022's worst year for bonds on record, U.S. Treasury yields hit 4% to 5% in 2023. With a recession looming, bonds look like a smart defensive move for the first time in years.

2022 was the worst year ever for US bonds according to CNBC, but rolling into 2023, things have changed. Right now there are US bonds that you can buy that guarantee a 4, 4.5, even 5% rate, which a few years ago people would kill for a 5% risk-free rate. And right now in 2023, we are seeing them. So loading up on a lot of bonds going into a recession and turbulent times might not be a terrible idea.
