Bridger Pennington explains why raising the first million for a hedge fund is the hardest part. He manages a $25M fund now and says that once you get past the initial $10M, fundraising gets easier and compounds over time.
Chapters
You talk to any fund manager and they'll tell you the first million is the hardest million to raise, or the first $100 million was the hardest $100 million to raise. Once you've raised that first chunk, the next chunk is a little bit easier, and the next chunk's a little bit easier. For me right now, I manage a $25 million hedge fund. Raising our first million dollars was extremely hard, but the second million was a little bit easier. Raising the first $10 million was extremely hard, but the second $10 million was a little bit easier. I believe that will continue to happen. I'm at $25 million right now. Hopefully we redo this video in a couple years and we're much larger than that, and I'll say, oh man, the first $25 million was way hard, but the next $25 million was a lot easier. And I think there's a lot of validity in just getting started on the path, 'cause it gives you years to compound as you go forward.
