Escaping The Void With Voice-led Clarity

Vocalist-coach Brooke Richey describes how chronic overthinking and dissociation create a mental void where unresolved memories pile up outside your timeline, causing physical and emotional dysregulation. She uncovered a 15-year-suppressed trauma that showed up as joint pain. The fix: retrieve those unresolved items and ground them back through breath and awareness.

All right, we're here. We're gonna talk about it. We're gonna talk about the rabbit holes in your mind when you start to over-compartmentalize and you overthink and you project onto others and you get into this fluttery state of immobilization. You know where that place is taking you. It is taking you into the void. The void. And I'm very familiar with the void. Why? Because I decided a few years back that I was going to do some memory mining so that I could uncover a 15-year suppressed traumatic memory. And I wanted to do this because I knew something was I knew something had gone wrong. I had a diagnosis at 23 years old. My knees and my hips were buckling when I'd be walking up and down stairs. I'm a healthy young adult, a soccer player, a rock climber. It made no sense. So let's talk about the void. The void is this place. I want you to look at this like Get rid of this. I want you to look at the void like here you are, stick figure you, walking along your life trajectory. This is you doing all the things. You go to school, you get a job, you have good friendships and relationships, all the things that are what Keeping you grounded. All those things are grounded. Why? Because they connect you to time. Time is ever ticking that keeps going and going and going. Okay, so we got you, we got the things that keep you grounded, and those things keep you grounded. Why? Because they're connected to time. Now, when it comes to that overwhelm, that fluttery anxiety, and everything else that comes up, what happens? Here's your brain. Let's use a new color. What's a good color for the brain? Blue? Maybe not blue. Red? That's too gory. Let's do blue. Here's your brain. When you start to overthink, when you get anxiety, when When you start to dissociate, what happens to your mind? Your mind starts to float up. It starts to float up because you're thinking all these thoughts, right? What are the thoughts you're thinking? Probably not good enough. I'm not enough. What else happens? I don't matter. I'm not enough. I don't matter. What else happens? Um, I'm a horrible person. Horrible person. All of this inflicting what? Anxiety. Which does what? Disconnects you from your breath. Anxiety, dissociation. Asian. Disconnects you from breath. And the breath does what? It keeps you grounded. Okay, so it's not a bad thing to think about things. It's not a bad thing to use your logic, to use your reasoning. to make decisions. But if you're in a place where the rabbit holes of thought have been spiraling and spiraling on end, bringing your mind all the way up into the stratosphere— and let me get this, let me get this clear for you guys, like, this is just to draw an image of it. If you are so disconnected with time that your mind is up here in the stratosphere, you know what's going to happen when you come back down? You get gravity sickness. You get ill because your mind and your body has now been divided for so long that it's trying to reconcile that time apart. It's trying to reconcile how to be human again. So where does the void come into play with all this? Here's the void. Here's the void all up here. And the ground, you know, we got our grass, some trees, everything good that is on the earth, right? Like, we have— We have the Earth. Okay, it's not gonna be a perfect picture right now. Okay, there's Earth. The void contains what? Unresolved things. And that's how we got here in the first place. It's because we were thinking about something unresolved. It also contains truth of time. Absolutely. But what it really holds is things that are unresolved. And why do I know this happens? It's because I lived with a suppressed memory for 15 years, and I forgot my favorite band that I listened to growing up. I forgot my favorite band. Who? Who forgets their favorite band? Who forgets their favorite food? Who forgets that? Someone who had a brain injury. Someone where something went wrong and their brain went, uh-uh, I'm turning that off. Okay, so are you following with me? This holds unresolved things. The more unresolved stuff— so let's take this a step further. The more unresolved stuff you have on your timeline, then here's your timeline. Let's say unresolved thing happens, you're how old? 7. Another unresolved thing happens, 15. Now I'm talking about my own life. Another unresolved thing happens, 24. You don't resolve these things, and where do they go? Into the void. They're dumped straight into the void because instead of staying grounded like you could have been, processing these things out in time, grieving them as is needed in time with your own life, staying grounded with your own life, you've suppressed them, you've rejected them. And that is so much— so much of the time, a nervous system That's fine. It is absolutely fine and normal that your nervous system had that response to whatever event happened. Event, event, event. But here's your task now. Your task is to get whatever is unresolved back down to the ground, locked into your timeline. You follow me? Okay, that's all I'm going to talk about on this topic.
