Be You and pursue happiness

Bunny Young argues that knowing yourself is the first step to happiness. She uses Katie Sowers, the first openly gay female coach in the Super Bowl, as an example of someone who succeeded by being authentic despite pressure. Young's advice: figure out who you are, then don't be a dick about it.

Okay, so what I was scheduled to talk to you about is a mindful morning routine, which is awesome, but. And I'll probably chat with you about that next video. But I Today, what I really wanted to hop in here on and what I'm feeling passionate about that I'm going to speak to you guys about is being you. Right? This whole theme that we've been talking about is how to prioritize you. But it's hard to prioritize you if you don't know who you are. And so spending a fair amount of time in figuring out who it is that you are and you want to be. And it's a process, and I don't know that you ever figure it out 100%. I will 100% admit to you that I'm still a work in progress. I think I'm always going to be a process. I think I have a really firm understanding of who I am. There are things in my life that could change my perspective, and there are growth moments, and there are learning opportunities every single day, some big and some little. And so I posted on Facebook, or actually on Instagram and Facebook, about the NFL's assistant coach, Katie Sowers, I believe is her name. And so here she is. I'll show you. And so what I said was, you know, just congratulating her on making history, you know, being the first openly gay female to coach in the super bowl. And I'm not. And immediately people were just sending me direct messages or saying, you know, negative things. And you know what? Like, she dedicated herself to her dream and she made it happen, and she's making history because of that. She had an undying commitment to being her and being the person that she felt like she should be. And she's doing a really cool thing, and she's having this historical moment, and I'm gonna celebrate that. And it doesn't matter what you believe or what you don't believe. You know, being yourself and helping others and supporting others and celebrating others who are willing to be themselves absolutely should be celebrated. It is so hard to be you in a world where every billboard and every magazine and everything is telling you to not be you. And so whether you are an individual, that is out of the quote, unquote, normal. For the record, normal is a setting on a washing machine. And so in order to be happy, you have to be you. Until you're you, you're. You're always going to find a conflict because it's never going to be enough, because you're trying to Be someone else. You're trying to work somebody else's job. You're trying to go to school and get an education for someone else. What are you doing? You have an opinion on this? So being able to wholeheartedly be confident, pursue your dreams, and ignore that chatter and ignore, you know, the naysayers is totally 100% how you are going to achieve your highest value. And the last thing that I really wanted to share with you guys is in high school and college, I had this sticker that was on my bag that I had, like, my surf wax and stuff in. And of course, it was kind of like that teenage angst to be able to have this sticker, since I'm sure my mom was not proud of it. But I'm gonna share with you that what the sticker was because it's kind of my life motto as far as how I conduct myself with professional interactions, personal interactions, or when I'm thinking about, like, you know, negative comments on Facebook and all of that kind of stuff, and. And what I'm gonna do if I'm gonna retaliate and all this kind of stuff. So here it is. And I. I just love it. I mean, I just. It When I'm thinking about, you know, getting caught in the cycle of negativity, especially on social media. Like, you know what? I. I really have. Excuse you. I really have one rule, and that's. Don't be a dick. Like, and if me. It's not gonna make me happy to, like, go down that negativity rabbit hole with you. If that's what you want to do, then you do you. But, like, this little quote or message has served me well, and I found that when I practice it, I'm a lot happier. So even if you feel like you need to PG this quote for yourself, or if you just want to take a screenshot and print it out for yourself, I encourage you to, because at the end of the day, it's really simple. Being a human is super complex. It's hard, it's difficult, but it's simple. Like, we have to cooperate with other humans. And the more that you can love yourself and be yourself and not anybody else, I think the better luck that you're gonna have being successful and not dealing with, you know, the negativity, especially when the negativity is coming from the voices in your head about you can't do this or you're not good enough, or, you know, the extreme highs and lows. So I'm talking about prioritizing you. So who are you. I want I want to know in the quote or in the comments, first off, if you have a quote that helps you kind of ground yourself and remind yourself to just be committed to being you. And secondly, I want to know who are you? And so, you know, just post in the comments, whatever that means. I'm not going to give you, like, an example or a template, because if I asked you, who are you? What's going to be the answer? So that's what I want to know. And if you want to see the post that I put on Instagram, it's Unnie has six legs on Instagram, or it's on my Facebook page. And other than that, I look forward to seeing all of these comments. And thank you for making the world a better place.
