Welcome back to the Power of Purpose Channel with me, Bunny Young, where we're all about work, life, alignment, burnout, prevention, and, of course, purpose. Sprinkled in with a little bit of talk around profits. Of course, today we are going to be answering that question of what do I want to be when I grow up? And this is not something that they have a class for in school. It's not like there's somebody that teaches you how to figure out what to be when you grow up. Or I don't really remember in school there being a class titled what do I want to be when I grow up? And given any time to really explore that, I think had, like, a piece of paper or worksheet that we got to fill out and then present. And then there might have been, like, Career Day, where we got to explore asking some individuals about their careers and their experiences. But here's the thing. Even if there was that class, it wouldn't have worked. Even if we listened to every single person in Career Day, it could spark an interest. And yet their experience and their journey is different than ours. And so today, we're going to be able to answer the questions that relate to our lives and our experiences and then apply. Apply that to the question of what do I want to be when I grow up? And why does this even matter? Why does answering this question even matter? Well, it's really important to identify if what you're doing right now is in alignment with what you believe your purpose is. Because your lack of contentment at your current job, your desire to resign, your desire to quit could be because you're not satisfied at your current job, or it could be because you don't see how your current job fulfills your purpose. And it could be both. And that's completely and totally all right. What we don't wanna do is find you a new job that you're all excited about, and then six months into it, you wanna find another job because you're feeling the same exact feelings that you were feeling at your other employment situation, or you quit your job and you start your own company, only to realize you really like the thing that you were doing, like dog training or teaching swimming or fixing computers, but you don't actually like the business part. And that is true for so many entrepreneurs. They love doing the thing that they're doing, but they don't exactly love the business part, which is a whole nother separate video. And make sure you click on this playlist if that's you. Back to the question of what do I want to be when I grow up? Or what do you want to be when you grow up? The good news is, is that you're asking that question. And that doesn't mean that you need to sit on top of a mountaintop and isolate yourself and chanting over and over again to find this answer. We can do some simple psychology exercises. I will be gentle and you will be closer to understanding more about yourself as well as what it is that you want to do to contribute to making this world a better place for me. I'll give you a tiny little bit of my story. So as an emt, I realized I didn't like that moment when those glass doors closed and I was a part of somebody's worst day of their lives. And then suddenly I didn't know what the ending of the story was. So I became a therapist because I knew I connected as an EMT with helping people, but I wanted to take that journey a little bit farther and help that person actually find some closure. And then I realized as a therapist that I wanted to help them take action. And so I started moving into consulting and coaching with companies to help from the inside out of a company. Their teams not burnout and have more work life alignment. And then I really focused on the speaking and awareness around work life alignment, burnout, prevention. And that's one of the reasons that I started this YouTube channel was to be able to bring more awareness to more people and not have to worry about taking the stage or doing another TEDx talk that's right there too, or being inside a company in order to make an impact. This way, anybody anywhere in the world can watch this video and get the same exact tools that you're about to receive. But you see how I took the things from each of my evolutions in my life in order to build the platform that I have today. And it wasn't about me just saying, well, I don't like being a therapist. It was about me saying exactly what I liked about being a therapist and exactly what I didn't like about being a therapist in that specificity is really specificity. Spec. We're going to leave this part of the video and you need to let me know in the comments how you say that word. Being very specific about what it is that you want is the key in order to get what you want. Because you won't recognize it unless you're specific about it, unless you can see what it is that you want and then you identify it. Otherwise everything is going to look attractive to you or you're Going to make decisions based on money or paid time off versus real purpose and values. So your first part of this exercise are what are your values? Write down some of your core values. And please don't start with integrity. Everybody starts with integrity. Go a little bit deeper than that. What are your core values? Secondly, what are your gifts? What do you bring to the world in order to make the world a better place? What do people tell you that you're good at? List all of these kinds of things, both the gifts that you recognize and the gifts that people tell you that you have and they recognize and share with you. And you can pause this video at any time if you need a little bit more time in order to answer these questions. But write down what are my gifts? And then answer that. Maybe write a half page or a full page. You can also answer this question of what do others appreciate about me? And this can tie into your gifts, but it also takes it a separate layer into it to be able to really go a little bit deeper and reflect. Because how often do we sit and really let others kind of pour into us their observations? And so this is something that you could take the time to ask somebody, what do you appreciate about me? Or what do you think my gifts are? It's a great question and you probably knew this was coming. But the opposite of that question, I want to know what you appreciate about yourself. So write down the question what I appreciate about myself and then do a full page on this one. It's not very often that we get to share such gratitude about ourselves with ourselves. And this is not narcissistic, this is just gratitudes things that we appreciate about ourselves. If your confidence is something that you appreciate about yourself, then write that down. If you your ability to problem solve under pressure is something that you appreciate about yourself, recognize it, bring awareness to that. And here's the last scenario that I want to bring to you before I share with you the very last piece that'll hopefully clarify all of this. I want you to take a piece of paper and write what you want your life to look like in a year, five years, 10 years. Because here's the thing, we typically underestimate what we can do in five years or 10 years, but we overestimate what we can get done in a year. We put a lot of pressure on ourselves in 90 day goals and 12 month goals, where I want to be in a year. But in five years and 10 years we tend to underestimate and so get really clear on what that lifestyle looks like and Then we can reverse engineer from that to answer the question of what do I want to be when I grow up? Pairs with what I want my life to look like in five to 10 years and match those realities in order to really fulfill not just your purpose, but also your dreams. And that's really what life's about, right? So here's the last thing that I said would hopefully bring a lot of clarity. You know what? It will bring a lot of clarity. I want you to imagine a road. I'm going to try to draw two lines right here. And outside of those lines are guardrails called core values. This is why I asked you what are your values and how'd you write them down? And so on this road of life, these core values keep you from, from four wheel driving and going off into nowhere. And you've probably recognized when you felt that you violated a core value and you're off roading and you're no longer on the path of your life. And then I want you to imagine at the top of this road is your vision or your purpose. This is like why you're here on earth. For me, it's making the world a better place. And I could get more specific than that, but I really want you to make this. And then down here we have this little car. It's cute, right? This is your mission. This is what you do each and every day. This is the answer to what do I want to be when I grow up? Because this little car drives up the road and takes you to your vision. It takes you to your purpose. It's getting you closer to your purpose without violating those core values. So with these questions that I've given you and this beautiful illustration that you have on really core values, purpose, mission, you can truly and deeply and honestly authentically answer the question of what you want to be when you grow up. Please let me know what you got out of this video, what you want more of, and what you want to be when you grow up in the comments below. And if you like this video, click that little thumb below.
