Difference Makers Discussion with our Youth about these times

Verbatim transcript of a family video call (YouTube) during the early COVID-19 pandemic. Adults and children (named speakers: Chris, Rocky, Logan, Speaker A) discuss why they cannot visit (references to 'the flu' / 'the coronavirus'), children's emotions (worry, sadness), and at-home projects and activities: creating bath bombs/seed bombs, a 72-plant garden, plans for a chicken coop, and virtual playdates and classes (Spanish). The tone is informal, supportive, and family-centered; the clip ends with expressions of love and plans to video more often.

All right, Rock, so what do you think is. You want to say hi to Logan real quick?
That's all you got?
Why can't. Why can't we go visit Logan right now? What's going on in the world?
It's raining.
It's raining. But why else? What were you asking Daddy about? About the.
The flu.
The flu. So is that why we can't go see Logan?
Yeah.
Is that why mommy's at home and all that kind of nonsense?
Yeah.
How do you feel about that?
A little worried.
A little worried for all of the listeners. That's a horse in the background. It's a three year old horse that looks kind of like a toddler with a briar horse, but trust me, it's a horse. Do you want to ask Logan how she feels?
How you feel? I didn't hear you.
She can't hear you. Sweetie. Honey, you had no problem doing this the other day. You said you were sad. What are you sad about, sweetie? Right there. You gotta speak. The coronavirus. And what makes you sad about it? You can't play with your friends? Does it make you hurt right here? Well, there's Rocky and there's Dee, and.
Dave's on a horse.
Like having so much time with your sister.
You can put her down, buddy, because she's playing with chords and stuff and I don't want her to get hurt.
Do you?
Chris asked you if you liked having so much time with your sister?
A little.
A little honest answer. Rocky, what's different? Hey, V. What's different?
Go play in Mommy's room. What's different for you right now with homework, with school, with all of that? What's different?
I'm talking on the computer.
What's that?
I'm talking on the computer.
That is a lot different, isn't it? What's your favorite thing about all this craziness?
I'm with my family. I'm with my family.
What about you? What's your favorite thing?
I get. My mom gets to stay home.
Her mom gets to stay home. That's what she loves. What's some cool projects you've done?
Paintings I have done. I created a bath bomb. It's boring upside down.
What is it? What's your big project that you. That you did, Rocky?
I made bath bombs.
Bath bombs. That's cool. You want to tell them what you did?
I made seed bombs.
What? Seed bombs. She made seed bombs.
Oh, awesome.
We have a whole. You can't see it, but over there in the corners, her 72 plant garden that she Put together.
Logan has a garden. Isn't that cool? What did yesterday. Would you go pick up yesterday so that we can have. No, not the bath bomb. What's out there in the yard that you and grandpara picked up? The red and white thing. What are we gonna put in it?
Chickens. A chicken coop.
Chickens. Wow. What kind of chickens? Little yellow ones.
Orpingtons? I don't know. Hopefully the ones that lay.
We found a billion eggs in that chicken coop. Then we took them out and put. Put them somewhere.
That's cool. So are those your chickens, Rocky?
Yes.
Did you name them yet?
We don't have them yet.
They're gonna be Rocky's chickens, but we haven't named them yet, apparently. Just so the listeners know, there's a shortage of chickens and of chicks. And it starts with a P. You're gonna have to Google it and put it in the comments, Chris. Like what, a teenage. A pullet, I think, is what it's called. I don't know. It's like a juvenile chicken or something. Or maybe it's an adult chicken.
I don't know.
As with the rest of the world, I mean, I know there's people that know more than chickens and more about chickens, but as with the rest of the world, I am learning as we go. So, Rock, what's one thing that you want to tell Logan before we hang up?
You're awesome.
What's one thing you want to tell Rocky?
Go ahead, tell me.
Why don't you give her a hug?
Give her a hug.
Oh, go put your face. Smash your face on that, man.
All right, well, Logan, in a couple months, babe, I promise that we will see you guys soon. But you know what? One of the good things is, Lo, is that since we live so far apart, I don't get to see you and Rocky doesn't get to see you as often as we'd like. And so now that we're getting so used to using the video, maybe we can video more often so that you guys can see each other more often. And Rocky will just walk around the house with my phone or the iPad and talk to her friends. So that's something that her and you guys have done that, right? You guys did that once together, right?
Yeah, we built in, usually, like a play date, A virtual play date once a day with one of her friends, whether it's her school friends or Rocky, but someone she gets to talk to. Because from a parent's perspective, there's nothing more healing than a child uncontrollably giggling. Giggling yes.
Yeah.
After your class. Actually, she has a Spanish class at 9:30, so we have to jump off the phone real quick.
But we. That's definitely something that we will do more often. So we love you, Logan.
Love you.
They love you. Bye. Bye, guys.
Bye.
Hola.
