In this diary‑style video, hypnotherapist Caroline Cavanagh explains her weekly practice and demystifies hypnotherapy for a general audience. She introduces the "chemistry session" – an initial intake focused on building rapport and educating clients about the neurochemical, neurological, and energetic mechanisms underlying emotions such as anxiety. She argues that understanding these mechanisms makes behavioral change easier. Caroline discusses her criteria for working with younger clients, emphasizing emotional maturity over chronological age, and shares concrete examples of how she uses sport‑related metaphors to translate complex brain concepts for an 11‑year‑old tennis player and a 15‑year‑old drummer/footballer. She highlights the variety of her current caseload – adolescents, adults dealing with anxiety, alcohol use, weight loss, and more – and notes that the chemistry session itself does not involve therapeutic intervention but sets a strong platform for rapid progress if the client feels a good fit. Finally, she invites viewers to a free informal phone or video chat to assess whether her hypnotherapy approach aligns with their needs, promising to refer them elsewhere if not. The video ends with a friendly sign‑off and a preview of next week’s update.

Hi there and welcome to the latest edition of Diary of a Hypnotherapist. And I've been recording these diaries for a good few months now because so many people say to me, what actually does a hypnotherapist do? And there are some very weird and wonderful ideas about what hypnosis actually is. So through these videos, I share a little bit of what I get up to in my week to give people a better idea and perhaps think, That could work for me too. And I've had a number of new clients start with me this week, and the starting point for everyone who works with me is what I call a chemistry session, because the most important factor, I believe, for someone to get a really positive result is that they feel comfortable with me and the way that I work. I am a little bit quirky, I'm not everyone's cup of tea, and that's okay. And so in that chemistry session, we go through a lot of the science behind the work that I do. And that's one of the things that I often hear— hypnotherapy is a bit woo-woo, whatever woo-woo means. But the reality is there is evidence of hypnosis that goes back 3,000 years. It's been around a heck of a long time. And with the advances that we have in technology now, we can scientifically evidence what is going on in the neurology, in the mind, when people are feeling anxious or feeling any of the emotions. So by giving people a real education about how their mind is working, how the chemistry in their bodies— because all our emotions are actually chemical reactions going on— and also the physics, which is all about energy, when these 3 things all come together, It helps people really understand that whilst they think they're broken, they're not. It's just that their thought patterns are creating a chemistry draining their energy which is leading to the behaviour to try and overcome some of those factors. And it really helps when people understand why their brain is working in that way because then taking the next step into think a different way, to behave a different way, becomes so much easier. So in that chemistry session, we don't actually do any therapeutic work. It's just about creating a platform, and if that platform feels really strong for that person, we build really, really quickly. So it gives a quicker result even though it's a slower start. And if it's not right, that's okay too. I can help someone go to a different form of therapist or perhaps a different hypnotherapist That may be a better fit for them. And with the new clients that have started this week, there's been a number of youngsters. Another common question I get asked is, how young can you— can someone be for you to work with them? And my answer is always, I'm very uninterested in the physical age. It's much more about emotional maturity, someone's ability to really understand what's going on with their thoughts, with their feelings. And so, the youngest person that started with me this week was 11, but she's a single child, so she spends a lot of time one-to-one with an adult. And I would say her emotional maturity was more akin to a 15 or 16-year-old. Whereas equally, I started with a 15-year-old, and the work with them will probably be slower because she doesn't have the same level of emotional maturity. She's more down probably the 12, 13 age group. And especially with children, one of the things I absolutely love doing is coming up with metaphors to help them relate to some quite sophisticated neurological concepts in a way that they can understand. So, the youngster is a very good tennis player, so I try and bring in knowledge of, well, if you're standing on court and this is happening, You do this, don't you? And she's like, yeah. Well, that's how your brain is working in this way. She went, oh yeah, I get it. And with the 15-year-old, she is a drummer in a band and also a very good football player. So I've got 2 avenues of things I can work with there in terms of the rhythm of music and how if all the different instruments are playing different tunes, it's just a cacophony of noise. Whereas when they're in harmony, it's beautiful. And that's a bit like your thoughts. When there's so many thoughts going around, it's just noise. Whereas when you're in control of the thoughts and they're all in harmony, it works much better. And that's one of the things that brings me so much pleasure in the work that I do. It's not just about having a whole range of brilliant tools that I can use. It's about taking that tool and thinking, how can I help you to use that tool in a way that you understand, so that you can become really competent in using it too. And that's a big part of the joy that I have in the work that I do. So as always, it's been a very varied week. 3 younger people working with me, someone that I've been working with, with alcohol usage, someone that wants to lose weight, along with all of the people that are struggling with anxiety And so here we are on a Friday afternoon. It's June. I'm still wearing a jumper. Not good. But hopefully the weather's going to improve over the weekend, and I shall look forward to a very busy week next week. All of my client appointments are full, which is lovely to see, helping lots of people. And so I shall have lots to share with you in the video I record next week. But in the meantime, if there's been anything that you've heard of today, or even just You're a bit curious as to whether hypnotherapy can work for you, let's just have a chat. We can have a very informal phone chat, video chat, whichever you prefer, where we can just see if what you need help with and what I do are a good fit for each other. And if I can help, I would love to. If I can't, I will direct you with someone that may be a better fit. So for now, I wish you a wonderful weekend. Thank you. And I shall look forward to sharing another video this time next week. Take care for now. Bye-bye.
