In this episode Caroline Cavanagh explains what hypnotherapists actually do, countering common misconceptions with a clear description of hypnotherapy’s focus on changing perception to reduce anxiety. She shares two client stories: a woman anxious about an upcoming interview whose sleep was suffering, and a six‑session client who moved from chronic anxiety to confidence. Caroline outlines her therapeutic approach—helping clients regain power and perspective, typically over 4–8 sessions—to become self‑sufficient rather than dependent on the therapist. She uses a cake metaphor to describe the final session as the "icing" that consolidates mental strength. The episode ends with an invitation for listeners to contact her for a fit assessment, offering referrals to other therapies if hypnotherapy isn’t suitable.

What does a hypnotherapist actually do? Are you gonna make me cluck like a chicken or swing a watch in front of my eyes? They're questions that I actually get asked quite frequently, and that's one of the reasons that I started recording Diary of a Hypnotherapist, to actually make people a little bit more informed about the work that hypnotherapists do and the power of hypnotherapy. And this week there have been a couple of clients that have been really interested Interesting to work with. One of them was a lady who was approaching a, um, an interview. She hadn't had an interview for a good number of years, and she was starting to get really anxious about it, and it was starting to affect her sleep. And the more tired she'd get, the more she worried, and was already in a downward spiral, and the interview is a week away yet. So one of the things that we often do therapeutically is to help change the perspective on something. So we talked about how an interview was really someone that wanted a position and someone that needed a position filled. So no one had a power over the other; they were equals, and it was just a conversation to see if there was a good fit. And as soon as she recognized that, I'm not some mere person saying, "Please give me a job." I have power too, and my role as the interview is to communicate to them. Everything that I know that proves I'll be absolutely excellent for that job. She took back the power, and when you take back control of which power gives you, anxiety reduces. And that is a big part of therapy, whether it's hypnotherapy, counseling, or psychotherapy, the many ranges out there. It's about changing the perception Of things that you're looking at, which can then reduce the scale of the problem, or also actually recognize that there's options of looking at it very differently. And the other client was someone that has come to the end of the series of work that we've been doing. She's had 6 sessions, and another very common question is, how many sessions will I need? I don't know about other people, but my average with the clients I work with is between 4 And 8. Because my approach is to enable the people that work with me to not need me anymore. You can't tell me standing here, but I'm not very tall, and I'm certainly not tall enough to have people leaning on me all the time. I'm not a crutch. My role is to help you build the mental strength so that you don't need me anymore, and you've then got a phenomenal strength that you can continue to use, not just to survive but to absolutely thrive. And that's where this particular young lady had got to. In 6 sessions, she had gone from being horrendously anxious, still very much trapped in the past of things that had happened several years ago, to now sitting there going, Caroline, I don't even think about those things anymore, and even things that are coming up, I kind of look at and go, Yeah, I've got this. And the last session I have with someone is a session I get really excited about. And as I was explaining to her what this session involved, she was like, sounds a bit weird, Caroline, you're behaving very weirdly. But at the end of it, she looked at me and went, wow, that is phenomenal. So the route that she took was to bake the cake, put all the ingredients together. We ensured that the cake was baked perfectly, and then that final session was just the icing on the cake. And what it does is to take the power of the mind that we all have up to a whole new level. And she left here absolutely buzzing. So, that's just a couple of examples of the work that I do and the effect it can have on people. And if you're just a little bit interested as to whether hypnotherapy may be useful for you, whether you're really struggling like the one lady losing sleep, or whether you're actually doing quite well but just want to see, is there an icing? Is there something even sweeter that I can go to? Let's have a chat where I can explain a little bit more about the work I do and again see if we're a really good fit for working together. And if we're not, Do you know that's okay? Because I can then give you some advice on other forms of therapies that might be better for you. But for now, thank you very much for listening. I hope you found it useful, and if you want to have a chat, just pick up the phone and let's have that call right now. Take care for now. Bye-bye.
