In this talk, the speaker highlights how common spider phobia (arachnophobia) is—affecting roughly one in five people and many households—yet many sufferers feel embarrassed and avoid seeking help. Two main reasons drive the high prevalence: spiders are ubiquitous and unavoidable, keeping the brain on constant high alert, and the fear is often learned in childhood by observing anxious adults. The speaker explains the neuropsychology: a subconscious survival system triggers a fight‑or‑flight response that bypasses the rational, conscious mind, leading to panic and subsequent embarrassment when the threat passes. Despite the intense emotional reaction, the speaker reassures viewers that the brain is not malfunctioning and that professional therapy can resolve spider phobia quickly, often within two sessions. They provide links to a personal blog and a short YouTube video describing the therapeutic techniques they use, urging viewers to seek help without shame, both for personal relief and to prevent passing the fear onto loved ones.

Spiders, crane flies, daddy long legs. I'm finding many of these coming in to share my home with me at the moment, and it doesn't bother me, but research suggests that almost 1 in 5 people admit to being terrified at these 8-legged friends. And I would guess that if 1 in 5 is terrified, that probably means another 1 or 2 are also feeling high levels of anxiety at these 8-legged little beasties. To put it into context, that means that in a typical family household, at least 1 in 2 households are terrified— petrified was the word in the research— At something that at the moment is largely unavoidable. And one of the sadnesses I feel is that many of these people never get any help, and the reason being is they're embarrassed. Of the people that do come to me for help with their spider phobia, I often hear them say, I'm really stupid. If you have a spider phobia, it is not stupid. And in this video, I'm here to share with you why it's not stupid by explaining why your brain is doing what it does, and also to give you some links to information that can help you to overcome that phobia if you choose to. There are 2 key reasons why the fear of spiders is so high. Firstly, of the 5 top phobias, many of them you can avoid. You don't have to fly, you don't have to do public speaking, but spiders, they're around in abundance at the moment. And even knowing that, your mind is going to say, I know that there's a risk, therefore I'm going to be on a high alert. And so having on that perpetual high alert makes it even easier to tip into that area where people are saying, I am petrified. That is incredibly extreme. The other reason is that most pho— most fear of spiders is caused by a learned behaviour. So as a child, we learn a lot of our behaviours from copying the significant adults in our lives. So as a child, if you see your mum running away from a spider, you go, oh, that's what you do when you see a spider, and it gets filed away. A link is made between spiders and fear, and it stays there. As you then grow older, the conscious part of your mind develops, which is this bit in the frontal part. It's rational, it's logical, it's deductive. And so as adults, we kind of go, I know intellectually that little spider running across my kitchen floor can't help me. And this is where the embarrassment sets in. Because even though you know that logically, rationally, deductively, the subconscious part of your mind is responsible for your survival. And when that survival instinct is triggered— by anything that it has associated with risk, it bypasses the conscious mind and instigates the most primitive instinct we have: fight or flight. Hence you run. And then the subconscious mind goes, job done! I'm still alive! Well done me! Your conscious mind is then allowed to come back in because you're no longer at risk. And that's when it goes, oh God, I did that again! I feel really stupid! And heightens that discomfort even more. Any good therapist can help you work with your mind to resolve this phobia relatively easily. I have a blog on my website and also a short video on the YouTube channel that explains the techniques I personally use And in the vast majority of cases, any phobia, especially spider phobias, can be resolved within 2 sessions. So please don't spend the next 4 to 6 weeks, as we head into autumn and the spiders head indoors, of being petrified. Please don't be embarrassed at your phobia. You are one of many. Your brain is not malfunctioning. It's doing a great job. It's just got a connection that was made probably many years ago that just needs updating. And thirdly, know that by helping yourself, you may well be stopping the spread of your fear to others who you maybe love and care for. I'll put those links to the blog and the website Sorry, the YouTube in the chat below. But otherwise, if you want help, thank you for the thumbs up there. That's wonderful. Thank you for watching all of you that have come, and thank you if you're watching this after the live. Get some help because this is a very easy thing to resolve. Bye bye for now.
