How history can create anxiety - and how to overcome it

When Derek's version of events trapped the speaker in his past narrative, it fueled anxiety. She shares a tool: return to the present moment, the only timeframe you control. Write your own story now instead of staying stuck in someone else's.

History. Have you ever really thought about that word? His story. And history is all about the past. And I had a really interesting example recently where I got trapped in the past and it left me feeling really anxious. Derek, Did something that felt very personal to me, and it felt very unkind, very unprofessional, and it left me feeling undermined, on the back foot, and certainly really anxious about ever seeing Derek again. His story had become my story and literally trapped me in the past. And then I remembered a tool that I often use with clients. It's amazing what you have in your toolbox that you forget about sometimes. So I picked up this tool which was all about coming back to the present. The present is my story, and when I let go of his story and came back to being present in the present, I was then able to start writing my story. It's a very simple technique. It's just about being in the present because present is the only time frame that you have control over. So if you're aware that you're living in history, especially if it's someone else's history, come to the present. Pick up your pen and start writing your story that will be your history from the past, but one that you have controlled. Thanks for listening.
