How to reduce anxiety through this very simple technique you can use anywhere, anytime

Caroline Cavanagh demonstrates an anchoring technique: pick a discreet spot like the skin between your thumb and finger, squeeze it while picturing something vivid and positive for ten seconds, repeat ten times. After practice, the squeeze triggers endorphins and serotonin to calm anxiety before presentations, calls, or exams.

Hi there, it's Caroline Cavanagh, and I've come on a live today to teach you a little technique that is brilliant for building up confidence when you feel that anxiety rising. And it's something that I use myself on a fairly regular basis as well. And so girls, I think I'm not the only one to say that, you know, when we have our best undies on, you just feel a little bit more confident, right? Guys, I'm not quite sure what's the same for you, but I remember meeting a guy once who carried a little stone around in his pocket, and he said it was his lucky stone, and if he just needed to feel a little bit better, he would just reach in his pocket— hi there, guys that have come on and joined— he would just reach in his pocket and feel that stone and instantly again feel that confidence, which is a great thing to do, but we can't always have rocks in our pockets or always have our best undies on, so this is a little technique that you can use anytime, anywhere, and it's called anchoring. Now there's a blog that I've just written and published if you want to read through it, and you can go back over it in a bit more time. But here for now— Hi, lovely to see you! Here for now is a great little tip. In fact, this is good for the netball girls as well. All you need to do is decide on one point in your body that That is easily accessible, that doesn't look a bit weird. So 2 suggestions for you: that little piece of skin between your finger and thumb, or an earlobe. So you can be triggering this little anchor without anyone knowing about it. So first step, pick that piece on a part of your body that you want to use. There isn't a right or wrong. Once you've got that, the next thing you do is whilst you are squeezing just really gently That part on your body, think of something that really makes you feel good. Now, it can be something that you're really grateful for, it can be something that really makes you happy, something that, you know, really fills your body with love. It can be a memory, or it can be something that's based on imagination. So it may be imagining yourself on this wonderful, glorious beach, or guys, perhaps driving, you know, your dream car. Or, you know, walking into, bumping into George Clooney, whatever works for you. And as you're thinking this thought, for about 10 seconds or so, just really get into that thought, feel that feeling coming through you whilst holding on to this point, and then let go, count to 10, think about something else, clear your mind down, and then you repeat. Start squeezing that point again and have another, ideally a different thought, but still a really, really positive one. And we need to cycle through this about 10 times. So I'm sure all of us can come up with at least 10 different memories or 10 different dreams that will get us into that really, really good state. And that's what's the important thing. It's about really thinking about how would you feel sitting on that beach, putting your arm around George Clooney, driving that fast car. How did it feel when you, I don't know, first set eyes on the man that you ended up marrying? Whatever it may be that for you just brings out that really warm, loving, warm fuzzy feeling inside each time squeezing. Once you've done that about 10 times, just test it and find— you should find that even when you squeeze it, it starts to get that feeling inside of you. And so this is very much about setting up what's called an anchor. And it means that anytime then you can just squeeze that and your body goes, oh, when I feel that, I have that happy, warm, fuzzy feeling. And so it means that wherever you are, you can just pick on that point and access those feelings, because those feelings are just sending chemicals into your body. And how this works is with those happy, warm endorphins, serotonin, dopamine chemicals flooding around you, There isn't any room for anxiety. So I tend to use this if I know I've got a really difficult phone call that I've been avoiding and don't want to make, or if perhaps I've got a presentation that I want to make, and I will just do that, hold on to it for, you know, about 10 to 15 seconds is all you need. I can feel those warm feelings and it's like, okay, I can do this. So I hope you can do that too. Give it a go. Like I said, if you'd like to read the blog, it's It's at carolinecavanagh.co.uk. It's the last blog that's on there. There's loads more other— glad you like it, Alex. Hopefully this is something that you're probably familiar with as well, is it? Let me know. Have a go at it. If you find that it's not strong enough, just keep doing it. This works. It's just all about some of us are more sensitive than others. Hi, lovely to see you as well. God, that's thrown me! Yeah, some of us find it easier to set up than others, and for any of you that have children, this is a fantastic thing to do with children because they are really, really receptive and responsive to it. If they're little, if you see them getting really, really excited, then you can do it for them, and perhaps squeezing their ear is a nice one as well, or even something with a kid, putting your hand on their shoulder, just a little bit of pressure will create that same anchor point on their shoulder, and every time you notice them being being really buzzy, you just trigger that anchor point, hold it again for about 5 to 10 seconds, release it, and it will start to build up. It like layers up, layers up, layers up until it creates this really strong anchor that anytime, just by doing that, it triggers, and you can use it anytime that you need to. For teens, they may not be quite so happy about you, you touching them, but teach them how to do it as well. Going into an exam hall, being able to just go, okay, I can do this. It's brilliant. So have a go, read the blog if you want to go over it again, and I will be back soon with something else I want to share with you. Have a fantastic weekend. Bye for now.
