It is Possible to Change Your Beliefs | Caroline Cavanagh | @caroline-cavanagh

Caroline Cavanagh argues that limiting beliefs can shift once you see someone else succeed. Galileo proved the horizon wasn't an abyss; Roger Bannister broke the four-minute mile. Find who's already done what you fear, study how they did it, and practice it.

If you've ever felt anxious that you couldn't do something, the fear of failing, then here's a little tip to help. And it's based on the belief that if it's possible for someone, it's possible for you too. If we look into history, it wasn't that long ago, relatively, that people thought that if you sailed off the horizon, you fell into an abyss. But Galileo didn't buy into that. He sailed around the world, and very quickly lots of people were circumnavigating the globe. More recently in history, there was a belief that you could not run as a human being a mile in less than 4 minutes, but Roger Bannister didn't check into that one either. And as soon as he broke the 4-minute mile, so did many other people. Because suddenly impossible becomes possible, and to go from possible to probable is a much shorter step to take. And we've done this as adults all of the time. Think about all the things that in the past that you thought you'd never been able to do, but now you can. Even thinking back to learning to drive, if you can drive, Remember how that first driving lesson you'd have been really anxious, but now you jump into the car without having any concerns whatsoever because difficult has become possible because you've practiced. You learned from someone that already had that skill. So if there is something that you are fearing you can't do or even believe you can't do, that belief is holding you back, but we can change our beliefs. Galileo did, Bannister did, you can too. So whatever that is that you believe you can't do, the first question is ask yourself, who else has already done it? Because if they can do it, so can you. You just need to learn whatever it is they've done that's meant they can. And that may be something as simple as changing the belief that you can't. So if a fear is holding you back, give that technique, give that tip a go because it really works.
