Caroline Cavanagh, an anxiety specialist, explains how lying to keep the peace actually damages self-esteem. She worked with a client who habitually lied to her husband, and taught her to speak her truth instead. When the client started honestly saying she felt quiet and wanted quiet, it validated her own feelings and strengthened her confidence.

Self-esteem is so important to our own inner confidence, but it can be really fragile and easily dented, and quite often we erode self-esteem ourselves. A tip that I'm just going to share today was one that I used with a client who was often lying to her husband to keep the peace. He would say, for example, You're really quiet today. She just wanted to be quiet, but she'd say, Oh, I'm just tired. And the tip is, speak your truth. It would make no difference to him to say, I am feeling quiet today. I just want to be quiet today. And when you speak your truth, you are acknowledging who you are, and that supports self-esteem. So the tip is, speak your truth. Be true and integral to yourself because that is telling your self-esteem that your feelings, your values are worthy, and in that you get stronger.
