Tilt - the alternative (and much easier) way to achieve work-life balance

Perfect work-life balance is a myth. Instead, try tilting: intentionally leaning into whichever part of your life needs attention right now, whether that's reconnecting with friends, mentoring, or walking the dogs. Small shifts like these can refresh you enough to tackle work with more energy.

Have you ever tried to balance a set of those old-style Victorian scales? It's really, really tricky, isn't it? And yet we talk about work-life balance as if balancing all of the elements of our life is going to be easy to do, but let's face it, it's actually really tricky too. So I've given up on work-life balance and focusing on a technique that I found in a great little book That for the life of me, I can't remember what the name is, but I will find out the name when I get back home and pop it in the comments below. And it's called just Tilt, and it's just about trying to tilt into an area of life that you need to do at that moment. So this year I'd kind of recognized that I wasn't tilting enough into the social side of my life. And yet COVID is a part of the reason for that, but can't really justify all of the root blame to COVID. So I'm now tilting more into social life. This morning I met up with a lovely friend called Shelley, who we reckon we hadn't seen each other for about 4 years, and we had breakfast together and it was lovely to catch up. I came home Did a few phone calls and then got in the car and drove out to have lunch with my mentor. Now we do bits of work when we're mentoring each other, but also we just have a nice time enjoying red wine and lunch. And now here I am on a Friday afternoon out walking the dogs. And do you know, that's a different tilt because the amount of calories I've had today kind of needs to be balanced by doing a bit of exercise. But there you go, tilting is just about making those little adjustments that make a difference. By making the choices today, my to-do list is still as long as ever and probably longer because things have come in today, but so be it, they're going to be there on Monday. But by having spent time and tilted into another area of my life, I've got more energy, I'm looking forward to my weekend, I'm going to be less tired, and on Monday I'm going to be a bit more enthusiastic about tilting back into my work part of my life. So the message really from this video is stop thinking about balance because it's really hard. Just think about tilt. Where do you need to tilt into? Which part of your life needs a little bit more attention? And just lean into it. Do a little bit more. One day of my month, because that's all I've got planned for at the moment, of tilting into social life at the moment has made all the difference. What difference could tilting make to you? So have a think of that. If you want to share some comments with me in the comments box below, I'd love to hear them. And otherwise, I will be back probably to share something else when I'm On another muddy walk at some point very soon. Take care, bye! Bye!
