Madeline Mann walks through a six-step process to write a cover letter's first line: find a job opening, locate someone at that company on LinkedIn who shares a connection with you, ask them about the workplace, then name them and their endorsement in your opening sentence. One client got interviews from three of five applications using this method.

This is the best first line to a cover letter, letter of interest. My client, he tried this. He applied to 5 positions, 3 of them he landed interviews after making this change. So anyone can do it, any profession. There are 6 steps. Here we go. Step 1, find the job opportunity. Step 2, find that company on LinkedIn. Step 3, go to their company page on LinkedIn. And look at their employees. You can see it there. Step 4, find someone among their employees who is most likely to reply to you. So that's usually someone who has something in common with you. Maybe there is a common connection. Maybe you both went to the same school. Maybe you both majored in the same thing. Maybe you both lived in the same city. So step 5, I want you to reach out to this person via LinkedIn message, via email, whatever it is, and say that mutual thing that you have in common, and then ask them if they like working there, such as, hi, I'm Madeline Mann. I saw we both volunteer for Make-A-Wish Foundation. I saw you work at X company. I was wondering, how do you like working there? Now, if they don't respond back, find someone else and do this. But once they respond back, maybe they'll say something extremely simple like, yeah, it's a good place to work. So now this gives you everything you need to do the best opening line to a cover letter. So step 6, this is going to be your first line in your cover letter that is so good. So here's what you're gonna write. Name, your, and their job title, said great things about the company name. So I knew I wanted to apply for the job title position. I'll put up here on the screen. We'll get them to take another look. Oh, they know this person. 'Who does this job at our company?' Ah, and they are much more likely to read your application.
