For Profit Before Nonprofit. Why Charity Is Not Giving Back, It's Just Giving

Myron Golden argues that business must come before charity because charity can't exist without profitable companies funding it. He shares personal stories about why building wealth matters more than giving it away.

Yes, that's right. You read it right. Business is better than charity. You're probably thinking like, who would say something like that? Of course business isn't better than charity. I mean, business people are evil and charity is good. While business is better than charity, business is more important than charity. That is not to say that charity is not good. And that is also not to say that charity is not important. I think charity is important. I think charity is good. But I think, and I believe with every fiber of my being that business is more important than charity because.
You can have business without charity, but you cannot have charity without business. Business has to exist. Somebody has to do a business to create value for somebody other than themselves in order to. For charity to even exist.
You can't give what you don't have. The only reason any of us ever have any money in our pockets or on the floor in our pockets or in our bank accounts or in our wallets or purses to do the things we desire to do for the people we love the most and the causes we care about the most is because somebody somewhere started a business that sells something to someone for a profit. And if that did not happen, there could be no charity. And so I believe in charity. I love to give. I loved. Like we support orphans and we support widows and, and I give to homeless people when I see them. And, and. And I have money on me and the other day. And by the way, I'm going to tell you a story, but I don't want you to think I'm a good person because of this, really. So I'm going to tell you the whole story.
It's really easy for people who are watching other people do something to know how it could be done better. Right, Myron, you should just give your money to the poor. If I had that much money, I'd give it to the poor. Right, but you don't care enough about the thing you're proclaiming to care about the poor to go make enough money to give to the poor. And so even though I'm not going to give all my money to the poor, I'm telling you right now, that's not. That's not ever going to happen. I'm not going to give all my money to the poor. I am not going to give all of my money to a foundation. I'm not going to give all my money to somebody else. I am going to leave as much money as I can to my children and my children's children. Why? Because the scripture says this is. It's in the Bible. The Bible does not say that if you do not tithe, you've denied the faith and you're worse than an infidel. The Bible does not say, and I believe tithing is good. The Bible does not say if you don't read the Bible, you've denied the faith and you're worse than an infidel. And I believe reading the Bible is good. The Bible doesn't say if you don't pray, you denied the faith and you're worse than an infidel. Here's what the Bible says. If any man provide not for his own, especially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith and is worse than an infidel. So I'm going to make sure that I am the right kind of abba or av, depending on how you want to pronounce it. In Hebrew, the word for father is abba. In English it's four letters. A, B, B, A. In Hebrew, it's two letters. Aleph, beit. The Aleph is the letter that represents God. Beit is the letter that represents the house. So the Aleph, Beit, abba. The purpose of a father is to be God in the house. Not God. Do what I say or I'm going to strike you with lightning.
But God is the progenitor of the house. God, he's the progenitor of everything. The Father's the progenitor of the house. He's the. The Father's supposed to be the protector of the house. Do you realize God came to Abram in Genesis, chapter 15? Here's what he said. And by the way, Abram's name, Abra. Abram. Abram means High Father or Exalted Father. He comes to the Exalted Father, Abram, and he says, fear not, Abram, I am your shield and your exceeding great reward. What does that tell us? I am your shield. That's your protection. You're exceeding great reward. What's that? Your provision. When God made Adam and Eve, he put him in the Garden of Eden. Garden. The word garden means enclosure. We know the Garden of Eden had a wall around it or it had a fence around it. Why? Because there was a gate. You don't put a gate out in an open field. Right. The Bible tells them when God put Adam and Eve out of the garden, there was an angel there standing at the gate with a flaming sword. And here's what an angel at the gate with a flaming sword means. Do not enter. Right? It's the most bold to do not enter. Sign of all Times and. But the Garden of Eden, the word garden means enclosure. That's the protection. The word Eden means, means pleasure. So God's ideal environment for man is the protected place of pleasure. The father's job, the father's job is to be the protector and the provider of the family. So he's a progenitor. That's what the ab is. The ava or the abba or the av is the progenitor. He's the protector. He's the provider of the home. He's also the promoter of the house. The father is the one that God gave. What is the first thing that God did in relationship to a human being? Here's what it says. Genesis, chapter one. And God blessed them and said unto them, be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth and subdue it. So God first blessed them. So the father is the one who promotes the people in the house. He blesses them, he praises them, he shows them what's inside of them.
And so.
As a man, I feel like it's my responsibility to provide for and to protect and to promote my family. That's my primary obligation as a man who is representing. It is my job to show my family what God looks like in real time practically, not. Not just a bunch of words, right? And so.
I started a business. You know why I started a business? I started a business because, like, one.
I don't like people telling me what to do. Is that too transparent? Right? I don't like people telling me what to do. I don't have an outfit that matches a boss, right? And even the people on my team, they know I don't like when they introduce me. This is my boss. I'm not your boss. We're co workers, not your boss. I mean, some of them think they're my boss, especially. Especially Larry. He knew it was coming. He knew it was coming. But, like.
It'S the promoter. God blessed them. He gave them the capacity before he gave them the command. He gave them the ability before he gave them the assignment. And so, as a father, like, I started a business because I don't like people telling me what to do. I started a business because I felt like nobody was willing to pay me what I was worth, so I figured I'd hire myself. So Now I'm a W2 employee of my own business, and I make more money than I've ever made working for anybody else, right? So I started business for those reasons. But now, because I have a business, I can do more good. So I don't Want you to think I'm telling you just because I'm. The Bible says, when you give your alms, don't let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. But what that's saying is you don't give for the purpose of showing off. You give for the purpose of.
Giving and blessing, right? But I'm gonna tell you about a particular instance, because recently on a YouTube video, I told the story about how I was driving and I saw this homeless guy, and I didn't have any money on me. And so somebody in the comments said, so did you go back and give him some money? And I didn't go back and give him any money. But at least I thought about it, you know, that would have been a good thing to do if I had time to do that that day. Like, when I'm going out into the world, I'm not just going out, like, hunting down people who don't have anything to give them something. But then again, neither are you, right? But if I see someone, if I come across somebody has a need, like, I can't watch you starve, and I'm going to eat, and I know I'm okay, I'm gonna watch you starve, and I'm gonna spend more than a meal would cost on a box of golf balls, right? Like, I'm aware. I'm not. I'm not. I'm not unaware. And so. So I was driving to Publix the other day after I read this guy's comment, right before I blocked him on our YouTube channel. Because, by the way, I didn't block him because of the comment. I blocked him because he had no subscribers and no videos, right? So you want to use my platform to teach your doctrine, but you're not willing to do it on your own channel. You don't deserve to talk to the people that I serve, in my opinion. Okay? So anyway, so I'm going to Publix, and I turn in, and there's this lady with three little kids with a sign that says, please help me. I need a thousand dollars for rent. I didn't even. Couldn't even finish reading. But I'm dry. Like, I don't drive slowly, right? Because I don't like being in cars. I've been. I don't drive super stupid fast like I used to when I was young and not very smart, but I. I was. I was on a mission. I'm going somewhere, and if I'm going somewhere, I don't generally see peripheral things. I remember one time I Came in the house, and my wife said, how'd you like the wreath? I said, what wreath? She's the one on the door you just walked through. I'm like, oh, you didn't see it? But I go back and look at it because I wasn't thinking about it, right? So, like, I. People don't realize this. You don't really see with your eyes. You see with your mind. Your eyes are just one of the tools your mind uses to see. That's an aside. We'll cover that in a different day. So. So. So I drove past this lady, and I thought, was that a lady with three little kids and a sign? And so I literally stopped. There was nobody coming in behind me. I backed up. I read her part of her sign. I'm like, ma', am, did you come in a car or did you come, like, walk here? And I came in a car. I said, okay, I'm in a hurry. I'm going to Publix to get a banana. I'm going to Publix to get a banana or maybe a couple of bananas for my protein shakes. I'm going to be in and out. And I was already kind of zoom, right? Okay.
I said, ma', am, I'm going to Publix. I'm not going to be in there very long. I'll be in there 10 minutes at the most. But if you will get your kids, put them in the car, and you take them to Publix, you get a shopping cart, you get anything you want, and I'll pay for it. So. So I went to public. I'm not telling you so you can think I'm awesome because I didn't do it because I was awesome. I just did it because it's what I would want someone to do for my daughter if that were her, or my wife, if that were her, or my mother, if that were her, or if I had a sister for my sister, if that were her. I just like. So she came in and she just. Her and her kids were just. Then one of the. They just kept saying, thank you, sir. Thank you. You're more than welcome. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be of a part. Blessing. Thank you. I appreciate. We appreciate you, sir. I appreciate you, too. Thank you. Right, so. And it's like. And they're like little kids. Like, maybe the oldest one might have been seven or eight. And then there's like a four or five. And then there's one in a diaper and a stroller, and they're just like. They're helping their mom. Sir, is it okay if we get some candy? It's okay if you get anything your mom says it's okay for you to get. So go ask your mom. Whatever she says you can get, you can get. And so. And then. So I went and got my banana. I said, what else can I get while I'm here? I gotta find. Because this doesn't take 10 minutes to get bananas. What else? I told her I was gonna be here for 10 minutes. So I went and got some almond milk or something. I don't even remember. I don't even remember what else I got, but I got some stuff. I might have maybe gotten some impossible burgers. And then I said, I found her. I'm like, ma', am, I gotta go. I'm sorry. I just gotta go. So she comes up to the front, and so I let her go first because I'm paying. And so she goes, and she's got all this stuff, and they're putting it in her cart. And now her cart's full of all these bags. And then.
I put the little separator thing there. And then I said, oh, I'm gonna pay for hers. And so I paid for hers. And then they started putting my stuff in her shopping cart. I'm like, well, no, no, that. That's my stuff. I just. I've gotta go. So I don't want my stuff in her cart. And then I get home and I don't have the bananas. Like, that would be a disaster. Right? So anyway. So. But my point being, like, even though that person who left the negative comment did not mean it for good, I'm glad that they put it there, because it reminded me, you know what? Yeah, you're in a hurry, but you're not in such a big hurry. And I don't even know. Like, I don't know if that woman's husband sent her there to do that. I don't know if he's at home, like, passed out from alcohol. That's none of my business. Here's what I know. There's a mother with three little kids who's so desperate that she's willing to stand outside in the parking lot with a sign with her little kids in Florida in the heat, like, I can do something about this and everybody. Like, I can't fix her whole life, but I could do that right now. Do you understand that? If I did not have a business and all I had was a job, the most I've ever made in any other job in my life, I'VE ever had is $30,000 a year, right? That's the most I've ever made. That's the most I've ever made at any job I've ever had as an adult with a family. $30,000 a year. Like, everybody on our team makes more than $30,000 a year, right? And why am I telling you that? Because it couldn't happen. Like, that level of charity could not happen if I did not have a business. It's not that charity is not important. It's that it could not exist if it weren't for business. And all of the good stuff that each of us have in our lives, whether or not we're rich or poor in the United States of America, because, like, even poor people in America are rich compared to poor people in other countries.
Like, the good stuff that we have in our lives, we have because somebody somewhere started a business to create value for someone other than themselves, and they sold that value in the marketplace for profit. So, yes, I do believe that business is more valuable, is more. Is more important than charity, because you can have business and not have charity, but you can't have charity unless you have business. So the charity, like charity, requires business to survive as much as our bodies require oxygen to survive. So let's not buy into the lie that the government wants us to believe that business is inherently evil. Let's not buy into the lie that Hollywood wants us to buy into, that business is inherently evil. Evil. It's inherently good, even though some people use it for evil. And so maybe we should just thank God for good, honest business people every morning when we wake up, and I pray for them every morning when we wake up, and thank God for them every night when we go to bed. Do I believe that we should give to charity? I do. But I also believe this. When I give to charity, I am not giving back. When I give to charity, I'm not giving back because I didn't take anything from the charity in the first place. When I'm giving to charity, I'm just giving. There is no back.
So when I go to the bank and I borrow money and I pay my note, I'm giving back.
When I give to charity, I'm not giving back. I'm just giving. And when we say giving back, when we use giving back as a phrase. And by the way, I didn't come up with this. I learned this from Rabbi Daniel Lapin in his book Thou Shalt Prosper, which is one of my favorite books, and also business secrets from the book Bible but when we say giving back, we're implying that business has taken something and so therefore it owes a debt. I submit to you that the only reason the takers have anything to take is because the makers who started business went out and made something that other people valued. So when I say business is more important than charity, that doesn't mean charity is not important.
But I hope it helps you understand the value of business and stop. If you're one of those people who is always talking about what you would do if you had the money.
Stop talking and start walking and go figure out how to make the money if you care as much about those causes as you proclaim to. Because we got a lot of judgment for people who are willing to do the work and they're not willing to do with what they've made, what we would, what we say we would do. We don't even care enough about our cause. It's like people who. It's like people who want to. And by the way, I welcome disagreement. Like if somebody disagrees with a doctrine or somebody points out something that I say, that's the doctrine, I'll be the first to admit it. I don't think I know everything. I'm not right about everything. But for people who want to come on my YouTube channel and leave comments to teach their doctrine and they don't have a single solitary video on YouTube on their channel, I will delete it every time. So anyway, I hope this helps you. I hope it blesses you and you deserve, you deserve to live the most blessed life you can in accordance to how yielded you are to God's plan for your life. So stay blessed by the best. Thank you for watching, thank you for sharing, thank you for commenting, thank you for doing all the other YouTubey stuff that YouTubey people do. And I look forward to seeing you on the next video. Peace out.
