Gain a Gargantuan Competitive Advantage [GCA] Over the Competition | Robin Sharma

Robin Sharma outlines four steps to predict the future: study history, travel to spot opportunities, prepare rigorously, and keep a notebook tracking threats and pivots. He argues this method gives you a competitive edge over people who don't do it.

Hey, it's Robin Sharma, author of the 5am Club and the Everyday Hero Manifesto. This is a video that will help you do something amazing. It's a human superpower. You're going to love it. It's going to give you a gca, a gargantuan competitive advantage. And it's the superpower or the talent of predicting the future. Wouldn't that be great? People say, well, I don't have a crystal ball. I want you to have a crystal ball. Four ways to do it. The first one, study and master history. So Winston Churchill said, the farther you can see back into history, the more you can predict the future. So Mark Twain said, the future might not repeat itself, but it sure does rhyme. And so by studying history you learn that we've had plagues and we've had wars and we've had economic disasters, we've had climate issues. And there are certain factors that happen every single time well in advance before the big cataclysmic event happens. So read and study future and do it daily so you become a master of it. Number two, to predict the future. Travel. Traveling is one of life's highest educations. Don't just read about it in magazines or online blogs or whatever the country is. You want to figure it out. Is it a good place to live? Is it a great place to do business in? Are there opportunities there to serve and have an impact and to create value for the marketplace as an entrepreneur, as a leader, as a human being? Go there. You want to figure out what Japan's like. Get on a plane and fly to Tokyo. You want to see the opportunities in Latin America? Go to Bogota, go to Buenos Aires. You want to find out what India is like after hearing so much about it? Well, go to Mumbai and then go to Shimla and then go to Kerala and then go to Goa of course, visit Delhi, etc etc. So traveling is a key part of any leaders education and it's a great way to predict the future. Number three, deep rigorous preparation. In a world gone superficial, most people create content and consume content that's very light and it's very fast and people snack, bite on content, but that creates a brain that's very good at snacking versus going down deep into the rabbit hole. So what I want you to do is to remember that geniuses all have one thing in common. They think patiently and deeply about the problem they've been working on for hours, weeks, sometimes even years. Charles Darwin spent eight years studying barnacles as he formed and formulated his concept of survival. And his theories around evolution and survival of the fittest. And then the final element of predicting the future is assimilation. Take all the data, take your trips and build them out into mental frameworks and in your call it future predicting notebook so you actually see, okay, if this happens, then I'm going to go here. If this happens, then this is my choice. I call it Threats and Pivots. What are the threats in your industry? Let's say in society, let's say in the economy, let's say in the environment. Once you list the threats, come up with the pivots and mind map it out. So whatever happens, you are early versus late. It is better to be one year early because you predicted the future than even a day late.
