Transcript excerpt of a conversation between Simon Sinek and Kennedy Odede describing a formative childhood incident in Kibera: at age ~10–11 Kennedy stole a mango out of hunger, was nearly attacked by mob justice, but was saved when a man intervened and paid for the mango. Kennedy frames that single act of kindness as a catalyst that changed his perspective and led to ripple effects that helped many people.

You tell me the story.
I was around.
I think, 10, 11 there. Kibera is a tough place. I didn't want to be a thief. I was stealing one mango because I was. I was. I was hungry. And mob justice, they jump on me. Muizi, muizi, which means Swahili. Thief. Thief. I knew that moment I'm dead. Then this man walks in and be like, stop. Why are you beating this kid? And then he says he's going to pay it. At that moment, I saw the good in humanity. Despite us living in a tough life, there is always good of humanity. And that really changed the way I see things now.
