How To Get Ahead Of 99% Of People

Motivational talk by Myron Golden arguing that to be "better than 99% of people" one must develop three things: character (discipline and integrity), a calling (know and walk in the purpose that aligns passion and proficiency), and a cause (a purpose bigger than money). He illustrates these pillars with biblical narratives (David’s shepherd-to-king story and Joseph’s trials) and personal anecdotes to show how anointing, the valley of disappointment, and persistence lead to appointment and success.

Everybody wants to be the best of the best. You want to be the best of the best. We all want good, better, best. Never let it rest. Our good is better and our better is best. At least that's what I think we should want. And I don't even do shoulds for other people. But if I were going to do shoulds for other people, I would say you should desire to be the best. And if you can't be the best, why would you even want to be in the arena? Well, I'm going to read a story about a guy who became the best of the best. He was better than 99% of the people in his whole country. And he's probably better than a higher percentage than that because he's literally better than everybody. Here's what it says in 1st Samuel, chapter 18 and verse number 6 and 7.
It says. And it came to pass as they.
Came, when David was returned from the.
Slaughter of the Philistines, that the women came out of all the cities of Israel singing and dancing to meet King Saul with tabrets, with joy, with instruments of music. And the women answered one another as they played and said, saul has slain his thousands and David his ten thousands. Whoa, whoa, wait a minute. Wait a minute. Time. Time out. Time out. David wasn't even drafted into the army. David was discovered. David was the youngest brother of seven other brothers. Well, seven others, so there's eight of them. He was the youngest of eight brothers, seven of whom were soldiers. David wasn't a soldier. David was a shepherd. David was in the wilderness tending his father's sheep. And now all of a sudden, they got like the top 40. The top hit of the top 40 is Saul, who is the king, has slain his thousand and David his 10,000. Do you understand.
How mind blowing that is?
That's like saying Michael Jordan has scored.
However many points he scored. And then some new kid off the block, some high school student, scored 10,000 times or 10 times what Michael Jordan scored. It doesn't make any sense. So what was it that caused David to attract this kind of attention and to be so good he was thought of by the people in his own community that he's ten times better than than the king. There are three things in David's life.
That caused him to be better than 99% of the people?
Number one, David had character. What do you mean, David had character? David had character. He had good character. What is character?
I'm talking about discipline.
I'm talking about doing what you're supposed to do when you're supposed to do.
It the way you're supposed to do.
It and doing it that way every.
Time you do it.
I'm talking about doing the stuff you're supposed to do when nobody's there to watch you do it. I'm talking about not doing the stuff you're not supposed to do when you could have gotten away with it because nobody was around to see you not.
Get away with it.
David was the kind of person who realized that even when no man was watching, God was watching. And he was so faithful to his assignment and had so much character that while he was tending the stinky, dumb.
Animals, because sheep are not very smart.
He'S tending them, he's protecting them, he's providing for them in the wilderness. A lion came.
And took one of the sheep, and David went after the lion. Now, I don't know if you watch YouTube videos like I do. I like watching YouTube videos of lions. And lions are fierce. A lion will attack another animal. I've seen a lion attack a gazelle and eat the gazelle. Half of the gazelle while the gazelle is still alive. Like, I don't know about you, you probably don't like those wildlife videos. I like watching them because they're fascinating to me. And here's why. They're fascinating because you think, well, that's mean. The lion's not being mean. There's no malice in the lion whatsoever that causes the lion to go after the gazelle. There's no malice in the lion that causes the lion to go after the water buffalo. There's no malice in the lion, causes the lion to go after a zebra. The lion goes after the zebra because the lion's hungry. And in the lion's mind, the zebra's lunch, and the zebra's not. That has no malice toward the lion. He's not trying to starve the lion. He's just trying to stay alive. And now we've got a boy in the desert with some sheep, his father's sheep, and a lion comes and gets one of the lambs. And David chases down the lion, catches the lion by his mane and kills the lion for a sheep.
Lions are ginormous. They're fierce, they're strong, they have long paws, they have sharp teeth.
I'd like to think of myself as.
A person of character.
I don't think if a lion took.
One of my father's sheep, I'd go chasing the lion. But David had character.
He said, I've been sent to do a job and I'm gonna Do this job, and I'm gonna do it right, even though nobody's watching. Nobody's gonna celebrate me killing the lion. There was nobody there to cheer for David when he was killing the lion. He wasn't. He didn't kill the lion for cheers. He didn't kill the lion for applause. He didn't chase down the lion because he was gonna get a medal or a trophy or a victory or his name was gonna be in the paper. He did it because. Because protecting the sheep was his job.
Where are the people who do the work because it's their work to do? Those are the people who end up being better than 99% of the people. David had a call, but you think.
Okay, well, yeah, a lion. Okay, yeah, that's pretty serious. Then there was another one. A bear came and got a.
No sheep.
And then he went after the bear and killed the bear. People don't chase bears. Bears chase people. People don't chase lions unless they're David.
He's got a job to do. He's like, this lion can't have my father's sheep. This bear can't have my father's sheep.
And this teenage boy goes chasing down wild carnivorous predator animals because he wants to make sure he does a good job when nobody's watching.
I've got a nephew, Daniel. When Daniel was eight or nine years old, we.
I. I used.
I still do sometimes, but I used to use this stuff called dry, wash and guard to wash my car. And it's like. Like you just spray it on and then you wipe it off with a rag. It was like it had some kind of polyurethane something in it. And it was like, literally washing. Waxing your car to wash it. Pretty much. If you can imagine using car. You know how hard waxing a car is. He would go out in the summertime in my garage and he would wash my car. And I'd pay him, like, okay. And I'd go out there and say, dan, it looks fine. I'm talking about eight, nine years old. Dan, it's fine. You're done. It's good. I'm only paying you like 10 bucks. You're 8 or 9 years old. Wash my car, I'll pay you 10 bucks. He's like, uncle Myron, I can't.
What do you mean you can't?
No, it's done. I can't put my name on this.
You're eight. Can't. Eight year olds don't put their names on stuff, bro. I'm serious. That was what he said to me.
I can't put my name on that. Who are you? Right.
Okay.
David was that kind of person. My dad wouldn't know if this lion took the sheep. My dad wouldn't know if that bear took a sheep. This is my job. This is why I'm here. I would rather do more than I'm getting paid for than to get paid for more than I'm willing to do. That's the kind of character that will make you better than 99% of the people, because almost nobody does that.
So David was better than 99% of the people because of his character, but not just because of his character, but also because of his calling. David was called.
You know, when David was called, he was called right after he was ignored. He was called.
He was recognized. After he was disregarded.
God told the prophet of the nation, Samuel was the prophet of the nation. He was like what we would consider, some would consider, Billy Graham to have been in America. He's what some would have considered, would consider today. TD Jakes being. He's what some would consider today, John MacArthur being right. He was the prophet of the nation.
And he, God says, samuel, how much.
Longer are you going to mourn Saul? Because I'm done with that joker. He didn't do what I told him to do, and then he acted like he did. I'm done. I've rejected him for rejecting my word. But Samuel and Saul were friends, and Samuel loved Saul.
In fact, when God rejected Saul, Samuel.
Prayed all night for him.
God said, why are you praying? Why are you asking me for something I already told you no. For how much longer are you gonna.
Love the thing I'm done with.
Huh?
See, some of us can't change gears, right? Cause we want things to be the.
Way they always been. We want them to be the way they used to be.
God said, I'm done with what used to be. Saul is a. Has been. I'm done. Now, are you ready to move on? Because I've already moved on. Are you going to catch up with me or you're going to hang out here with Saul?
And he said, go down to Bethlehem, Bet lehem, which is the house of bread. Go down to Bethlehem, to Bethlehem, the house of bread. And there's a man named Jesse. He's got eight sons. I'm going to choose one of his sons to be the king who's going to replace Saul.
Samuel goes down to Jesse's house, says, hey, I'm here because God said.
He'S.
Gonna pick one of your Sons to.
Be the next king. One of my sons.
Jesse calls all of his sons.
Except David.
David didn't even get invited to his own inauguration service.
What?
Yeah, call your sons. He calls all. He calls. He calls Shama. He calls. He calls all of them. Eliab calls all of them. He doesn't call David. And one by one, Samuel says, lord is this one.
And here's what it says.
This is not me saying, this is what it says.
It says, the Lord has not chosen this. The Lord has not chosen this. The Lord has not chosen this. The Lord has not chosen this. The Lord has not chosen this. The Lord has not chosen this. The Lord has not chosen this.
Do you have another son? Oh, yeah, now that you mentioned it.
What?
Hey, you say. Marion, what are you saying? I'm saying stop worrying about whether or not people acknowledge you. People can't see the calling of God. His own family couldn't see the calling of God on his life. Surely not. Yeah, I only got one son left.
But he's the youngest.
He's ready. He's just a little ready. Dude. Surely it can't be him. Well, he's the only one you got left calling.
Here's what it says. It says, jesse called for David. And when David came in.
The Lord says, this is the one. Here's what it says. Samuel anointed David in the presence of his brethren.
Do you understand? When you have a call on your.
Life, you don't need to be elevated by a man. You don't need anybody on this earth to recognize God's gift in you.
Because when the time comes for God to show everybody the gift in you, you and nobody else will be able to hide it. I don't even know if y' all picking up what I'm putting down. But I'm telling you, there are some of you right now who are listening to the sound of my voice. And you're discouraged because Mama didn't see the gift in you. And Daddy didn't see the gift in you. And your brothers didn't see the gift in you. And your teachers didn't see the gift in you and your next door neighbor and your boss and your co workers or your husband or your wife or your children. And nobody saw the gift in you. But God knows what he put you.
On this earth to do.
And when it says he anointed David.
In the presence of his brethren, you have to understand the significance of an anointing. Because an anointing was when God revealed his purpose for you.
To you and those around you. That's what an anointing is. And you got to understand that when there's an anointing, the anointing is always for an appointing.
There's never an anointing without an appointing. So. So if there's an anointing on your life, that's because there's an appointing for your life. Now, here's what we want as human beings. We want the anointing today, this morning, and we want the appointing this afternoon.
Can I get a witness?
But that ain't how it works. We want the appointing today and we want the anointing today and the appointing tomorrow. We want the anointing this week and the appointing next week. We want the anointing this month and the appointing next month. We want the anointing this year and the appointing next year. That's not how it works.
God has ordained in his sovereign wisdom that between the season of anointing and the season of appointing, there has to be another season. And that season is called the season of disappointing. And that is the disruption that follows our intention. And that is the thing that makes us stronger, strong enough to be there, to stay there when we get there.
The season of disappointing is the valley between the two mountains of calling and purpose.
Between anointing and appointing. There's a valley, the mountain of anointing and the mountain of appointing. There's a valley. And that valley in between those two spaces is called the valley of disappointing. And it's the place where you're misunderstood. And it's the place where you're maligned. And it's the place where people talk bad about you. And it's the place where they gossip about you. And it's the place where nobody recognizes your gift. And it's the place where you're not getting paid what you're worth. And it's the place where you're not getting acknowledged for the things you bring to the table. But all of us have to go through a season of disappointing to make us strong enough to stay there. When we get there, you better preach.
Do you understand what I'm telling you? Do you understand? Like, but when is it going to happen? When's the appointing going to come? When are the appointments going to come? The appointing is going to come.
When the valley is done working on you.
The appointing is going to come when.
The disappointing is done working on you. Don't be surprised when people can't see the greatness God put inside of you. It wasn't put there for them to see yet.
They're not supposed to recognize it yet.
You don't have it on the outside yet, you're developing it on the inside. So when you get to that space that you were anointed for and you've now been appointed for, you'll be strong enough to stay there after you get there.
It's interesting.
Joseph's anointing was the dream that God gave him.
His appointing was becoming the prime minister of Egypt. But guess what his season of disappointing was. His own brothers threw him in a pit and were thinking about killing him. I got six brothers. I got my older brother Jeff. They got five younger brothers. We have not always gotten along, but they have never conspired to kill me. Thank you, God.
Because the six of.
Them together might be able to pull it off.
I am going to be so in trouble when they see this.
And then the Midianites took him out.
Of the pit and sold him into slavery.
Can you imagine Joseph thinking, I wonder if that was really God that gave me that dream. That's not what he thought. See.
David was fully aware of his character, and so was Joseph. David was fully aware of his calling, and so was Joseph. Here's what I'm here to tell you. Don't forget about your anointing. When you're in the season of disappointing, don't be deceived by disappointment and think that, oh, that must not have been a real anointment for a real appointment. I am here to tell you that when you are in the darkest hour of despair, that's when the valley does its best work on you.
I wish I had some help in here. Oh, I.
So David's calling, do you understand? When you got a calling on your life, you are invincible until that calling is fulfilled.
Your haters can't stop you, your tolerators can't stop you.
Your celebrators.
Your celebrators can't trip you up if there's an. If there's an anointing on your life for an appointing, the haters, they can come against you, but they can't do nothing about it except frustrate themselves and irritate themselves trying to stop you.
So you want to be better than 99% of the people, develop some character and trust your calling.
It's so interesting.
When I say trust your calling, here's what I mean. Don't try to be someone else.
David.
As a shepherd, his dad calls.
Him, says, son.
The armies of Israel are in a battle against the Philistines. Go down, take your brother some. Some cheese and Some parts corn and some bread and see how they're doing. David comes down and every soldier in.
Israel, in Israel's army was hiding.
What y' all doing?
Then he hears these footsteps, and the ground is shaking. Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. He hears this big roaring voice.
Send me a man that I might. That he might fight against me.
And if he kills me, we will be your servants. If I kill him, you will be our servants.
Everybody's like, oh, he's 10ft tall. Oh, he's 10ft tall. And his spirit weighs 60 pounds. And I don't know what I'm gonna do. What are we. Nobody can fight him. He's too big. He's got six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot. What are we gonna do?
Do you understand?
Goliath was not Israel's problem.
You know what Israel's problem was? Israel's problem was they forgot the promise of God. Therefore, they didn't know who they were based on whose they were.
Here's what God told Abram. And these are the children of Abram. These are the descendants of Abram. I will bless those that bless you, and I will curse those that curse you. And in you, all the families of the earth will be blessed. So.
Goliath comes over the mountain.
In the Valley of Elah, and he starts challenging the Israelites. Just one man determines the battle. And he says. Then he began to curse Israel by his false gods. Guess what? When David heard that.
David's looking around.
Ain't y' all gonna do something? Y' all soldiers. Why? Why? Y' all had. Oh, y'. All. I'll fight him. This is a boy. He's a boy. He's a boy. B o y boy. Teenage boy. I'll fight that giant.
His brothers said.
Who did you leave.
Those few sheep with in the wilderness?
Why are you here?
We know your pride and the naughtiness of your heart.
You came down to see the battle. Yeah, I might have came down to see the battle, but I don't see no battle. How do I know he said it like that?
Because I have little brothers.
I came down to see the battle, but y' all ain't fighting. Y' all hiding. I'll fight him. Tell the king I'll fight him. I ain't scared.
Here's what David said to his brothers.
He said, is there not a cause?
The cause. The cause. That's the thing that's missing, the cause. People are doing stuff because they want.
Recognition, but they don't have a cause. Nobody's Going to recognize you without a cause.
They're doing stuff because they want to make money, but they don't have a cause. David says, is there not a cause? What's the cause if he wins? We have to be slaves again. Don't y' all remember what happened last time? We were slaves. Our ancestors were in Egypt for 400 years making bricks to build the kingdom that enslaved us. And we had to go gather our own straw. I don't want to be a slave. The cause is so great that I cannot capitulate, and I will fight and die. And I would rather fight and die free.
Than surrender and be a slave.
David was willing to fight for the freedom of his nation, his king, his family, of his neighbors. I would rather die in honor than live in dishonor and capitulate to being a slave to this pagan.
You know why most people are not.
Noteworthy? Why? It's why the average person will never be better than 99% of people. Because most people don't have character. Like, unfortunately, today, most people don't have character.
People get married to somebody, they'll enter a marriage covenant, then they'll break that covenant. Like, not that big of a deal. It's just an affair. It's not an affair. It's adultery. It's an abomination. In the Old Testament, people were stoned for it. Why? Because when you break covenant, you're breaking a promise that you swore in your life.
They break the covenant.
Like.
It'S not just an affair.
That's not a big deal.
I was having this conversation with my brother, one of my brothers, I think with my brother Jeff. If I found out somebody who worked for me was committing adultery, I would fire them immediately. Why? Their wife can't trust them, I can't trust them. Their husband can't trust them, I can't trust them.
Wow.
Character. What you are when nobody's looking. Are y' all tracking? What?
What? Who are you when nobody's watching? You gotta have character and that you want to be better than 99% of the people.
Easy to do.
99% of the people don't have character.
They're not a person of the word. They say they're gonna do it, they don't do it. They say they're gonna be there, they're not gonna be there. They say they're gonna pay the bill, they don't pay the bill. Character. Be the person of your word. Number two.
Gotta know your call. How do you know your call? How do I know what I'm called? To do, Myron. I know what I'm called to do because I look at the place where my passion, the thing that I'm crazy about, the thing that I love to do, intersects with my proficiency, the thing that I'm good at. And that right there, that crosshair, is the bullseye of my purpose. Because God is not in the habit of frustrating his children. And he puts a desire in us for a thing. Delight thyself also in the Lord, and He shall give thee the desires of Thine heart. It's not saying if you delight in the Lord, he's going to give you what your heart desires. It's saying if you delight yourself in the Lord, he's going to give you what to desire.
And then you'll desire what he desires you to desire.
And then, of course, he'll give it to you. Why? If we ask anything according to his will, we know that he hear us.
If we know that he hear us, we know that we already have the thing that we position of Him.
So it's a passion, but it's also the proficiency. God puts something inside of you to make you the best of the best in the history of the world. And nobody can compare with you. But you have to walk in your calling. You have to develop character and walk in your calling, work on your character, walk in your calling, work on, work on your character, Walk in your calling. And then wake up for a cause. You have to have a reason for living that's bigger than just making money. You have to have a reason for building a business that's bigger than just making money. You have to have a reason for.
Going to work every day for the things that you work on that's bigger than just the money. It's so funny to me. Funny, interesting. Funny, peculiar. Not funny ha ha. Like people post things on my YouTube channel, say all you care about is money. All you ever talk about is money. You apparently don't know me at all.
At all, like you've never met me.
So you have no earthly idea. Cause there are a whole lot of things in this world that I care about a whole lot more than I care about money. But the reason I talk about money so much is because most of you don't understand it.
And God has shown me in his.
Word what to do financially so his people don't have to be broke as a joke and ready to choke their whole life because they do the right thing with 10% of their money and the wrong thing with the other 90%.
How do you be? How can I be better than 99% of the people. Work on my character. Work on being the person I purport myself to be. I love what the Queen of Sheba said about Solomon.
You know, I heard of your works, of your wisdom and of your works. In my own country. However, I didn't believe it until my eyes have come and see. And guess what? The half was not told me.
Solomon exceeded his reputation. That's what character will do. Character will make you show up bigger and better and brighter than people think you are. You will never be your real. The real experience of you when you have character will never be a disappointment.
These charlatans that sell stuff to people online and don't deliver on the promises and get people's hard earned money and don't deliver anything for they don't have any character.
When somebody's actions don't match their words, I don't trust them. Why?
Because they've already demonstrated they're a liar.
And you know what the old saying is? When somebody repeatedly shows you who they are, believe them. Character. Trust the calling on your life. When you trust the calling on your life, you'll stop trying to be other people. Do you know what happened when David went to Saul and said, I'll fight Saul. Saul gave David his own armor. David put on the armor. Here's what he said to the king. I cannot go with these. I have not yet proved them. And there are too many people walking around trying to win the battle of life wearing somebody else's armor when all you need is your own sling and five smooth stones from the brook.
See, the problem is too many.
We're spending too much time focusing on somebody else's calling, trying to be somebody else. I don't want to be somebody else. I don't want to be it. I don't want to be anybody else. I don't want to be. I don't want to be my brother Jeff. I don't want to be my brother Mike. I don't want to be Tony Robbins.
I don't want to be TD Jakes.
I don't want to be Martin Luther King. I don't want to be Malcolm X. I don't. I want to be Myron Freddie Golden.
I don't want to be anybody else.
And with all of my flaws, and.
Trust me, I have some.
With all of my flaws, I want.
To do the thing he put me here to do. You know why? Because when I'm here with me, I have no competition. Somebody asked Michael Jordan one time, why do you Work this hard. You know what he said? He says, because I got cut from my 10th grade team.
I work harder. I demand more of myself than anybody else could ever demand of me. See, when you get to the place where you've got a calling on your life and you understand the calling on your life and the purpose for which you created, and you dedicate yourself to that purpose, you'll be one of the.
Few people in the history of the.
World who ever does that. Because most people are too busy trying to be somebody else. Like my good friend Kenny Grant says, marin Myron, don't ever try to be somebody else. Because if you do, nobody's there. I said, kenny, what you mean nobody's there? He said, the person you're trying to.
Be ain't there and you ain't there.
So nobody's there. So go be yourself and be there. And then wake up for a cause. Cause that's bigger than you. A cause that's bigger than money. Like, for me, I didn't create wealth because I wanted the money. I created wealth because I hate poverty. I created wealth because I didn't want my family to be slaves their whole life. And when I say slaves, I mean slaves to debt. I mean slaves to I'm going to rob Peter to Paul until there's a knock on the door and it's Peter.
And Paul and they both got their.
Hand stuck out and went their money on the same day. I wanted my family to be free. That was a cause. I want God's people to know what God's word says that we should be doing.
Instead of sitting around waiting for God.
To do something for us, he told us to do for ourselves.
If you will do these things, you can be better than 99% of people. Because most people are unwilling to work on their character. Most people are unwilling to walk in their calling. Most people don't wake up for a cause. You can. And when you do, you'll be better than 99% of the people in the world. Hope this blesses you. Stay blessed by the best. And in the meantime, in between time, peace out, Cub Scouts.
