How To Get Rich If You Hate Selling

Myron Golden reframes selling as solving customer problems, not convincing people to buy. Stop saying "I" and start saying "you," obsess over what they actually need, and divorce yourself from needing the sale. He uses bad experiences buying a vacation club and a Mercedes to show what not to do.

Hey there. You're here because you hate sales or you know somebody who hates sales and you want to not hate sales so you can make more money? I hate sales. I've heard that said so many times. And when people say, I hate sales, I'm thinking to myself, how's that possible? I personally, I love selling. I love sales. I love selling. I love salespeople, because salespeople make the world go round. But people who hate sales, I believe the real reason people who hate sales hate sales is because the only sales experiences they remember are the bad ones. What does that mean? That means, like, when you have a bad sales experience, it's so painful that it etches something in your cerebral cortex that makes you say, I don't ever want to make anybody feel like that. That was so yucky. Now I don't have a lot of bad sales experiences. I can think of two in the last three years. One, I bought a vacation club package that I wanted to use to do destination location trainings. So I knew it would pay for itself, and it paid for itself the first destination location training that we did there. So. And it was like $170,000. And so it's already paid for itself. But the experience of buying it, I knew I wanted to buy it. And even though I knew I wanted to buy it, they wasted so much of my time. I'm like, dude, you don't have to do this. I want to buy it. Stop wasting my time. Stop giving me all the, like, the sales jargon. I don't need it. I don't need the sales jargon. What I want is I want to buy this stuff. But you are about to make me leave, right? So that. That one and then my car. I bought this a couple months ago, bought this Mercedes GT63s, and the car is fantastic. First time I ever saw one. I knew I wanted one, right? But the experience was so exhaustingly grueling, and it was like they wasted so much of my time. Like, look, dude, here's the deal. I don't want to do all this stuff. You, y' all fill out your paperwork. I don't want to watch y' all work. I don't work at y' all not paying me to be here. I don't want to watch you work. I don't want to come to a dealership and sit around for three hours while y' all run back and forth and then finally get your papers together. Y' all been doing this long enough to know how to do it anyway. It was a Terrible experience. And so I ended up buying the car because I wanted the car. And then I decided I will never go to a dealership to buy a car get. Only thing I'm going to a dealership for from now on is to drop my car off, pick up a loaner, and get it serviced. I am done. Why? Because the experience was so painful that I would never want to do that to somebody. So I'm going to. I'm going to help you understand how to sell without hating selling and without being like the car dealership and the vacation club and all these people who just try to grind you down. So you pay to escape the Hotel California. Okay, anyway, so what do you do? First of all. First of all, selling doesn't have to be painful. In fact, it can be one of the most pleasant experiences in the world. So let me start by saying this. Understand the. There are already people out there in the world who would love to buy your solution. If they do, it existed. And since that's the case, then you have to ask yourself the question, how can I make myself more findable for people who want to buy what I want to sell? So interesting. I went on Clubhouse yesterday for the first time probably in a year. And I just said, they were talking about ChatGPT, and I thought, Clubhouse, the app, the social media app, the audio social media app. So I said, I'm gonna go on Clubhouse. I'm gonna see what they're talking about on Chat GPT because I'm starting to use it, and I want to see what they're talking about. And so, as fate would have it, they said, oh, Myron Golden's here. Hey, Myron, why don't you come up and share something with everybody on how to collaborate for profits? I'm like, okay, I came in to listen, but I'll talk. Sure. So, and so I started talking about the things that you can do. And the guy that was a guy came on. His name was Luis. He said, man, a year and a half ago, you came on Clubhouse, man, I just want you to know you changed my life. And you talked about how you sell a $20 product and then you sell a $200 product. And he said, I did that and just changed my life. Right. So there are people out there who are looking for the answers, you know, and here's the problem. You don't like. You don't think the answers are a big deal. I'm going to tell you something like, I don't feel like my answers are as big a deal as People make them out to be. I just feel like, well, this is just stuff I know, but surely other people know this. Surely they don't. So first of all, understand this. Selling, real selling, like real authentic selling, is not convincing. The reason you hate sales is because you think, based on a terrible sales experience you had, you think that sales is convincing somebody to buy something they don't want, don't need, and can't afford so you can make some money. Well, if I thought that's what selling was, I would hate it too. Convincing somebody to buy something they don't want, don't need, can't afford, so I can make some money, I would hate sales. So selling is not convincing? Selling is persuasion. Okay, what does that mean? Convincing is when I attempt to get you to do something I want you to do for my reasons. So who am I focused on? I'm focused on me. If the salesperson is focused on themselves, the experience will always be bad. Did I say that too fast? It'll always be bad if the. If the salesperson is focused, if they're obsessed with helping you solve your problem.
If they're obsessed with that, the experience will always be good. And so what I learned is if I just obsess over other people's problems, I don't have to obsess over mine. Because if I obsess over other people's problems and I obsess over enough other people, a big enough. All audience of people with a big enough problems, they'll pay me enough money, I can pay somebody to solve my problems, all my problems go away. I don't even, like, I don't even have to like, I don't have to worry about my problems at all. My problems are going to be fine. All I have to do is obsess over somebody else's problems. And so. And so what's really interesting is when I realized that selling isn't convincing. Convincing is when I attempt to get you to do something I want you to do for my reasons, whatever they are. I want to make money, I want to make a promotion, I want to get an award, whatever. I'm focused on me. Persuasion is the opposite. It's when I help you make a decision you already desire to make for your own reasons. Now who am I focused on? I'm focused on you. And if I'm focused on you, like Zig Ziglar used to say, if you help enough other people get what they want, you can have everything you want. So hyper obsess over other people now. So let's say I've got a problem, you've got a problem, I've got a solution. Then I do some promotion. Maybe I have a YouTube channel, maybe I have an Instagram profile, Whatever. Now I've done that and now you come to me.
I've got to have the next step. I've got to be able to. It's not enough that I've been able to solve your problem. I have to be able to say I can solve it in a way that makes you believe me. And that's where becoming a better communicator comes into place. And one of the things that's really amazing about becoming a better communicator, like, there's a really, really simple thing all of us can do to become a better communicator when it comes to selling. And here it is, say you more than you say I or me. What is it that simple? Like, literally, like, so. So tell me what you would like to accomplish. So I hear you saying that what you'd really like is you'd like your children to go to better schools. Oh, what I hear you saying is you'd like your family to live in a nicer house in a nicer neighborhood. Oh, what I hear you saying is you want to make sure your family's taken care of if something happens to you. Oh, what I hear you saying is you don't want the cheapest experience. You want the best experience possible, regardless of price. Oh, what I hear you say. See, all you got to do is obsess over the you in the conversation and not the me in the conversation. Obsess over the you in the conversation, not the I in the conversation. So here's what most people do when they're selling. So what I have is our company created this product and we've been in business for amount of years and since 1997 and blah, blah, blah, and we do this and we do that and our product is great because it's better than everybody else's. And guess what? The more you talk about you, the more disconnected they become. The more you talk about yourself, the more disconnected they become. So hyper obsess over people. So for me, the reason I hyper obsess over business and teaching people how to make money is because the cultural hypnotic societal mechanism programmed me to be broke most of my life. I didn't have to be. And when I found out how simple it was to create wealth, I was mad. I know that's not the usual reaction somebody has when they find a treasure. I'm so mad. Why? Because the treasure was in my front yard. That's why. It was right there. It was in plain sight. They hid it from me in plain sight.
And so when I found out, I said, they let the wrong big mouth joker find out about this. I'm going to tell every somebody I can find. You understand? My first job, I made $1.55 an hour. My first job as a married adult with a wife and a child, $6.25 an hour. I have never had a job in my life that I made more than $30,000. Ever as an adult.
Mostly full grown adult. Sometimes I act like a child. Okay, it is what it is. But, but, but I've never had a job where I made more than $30,000 in my life. I'm 61. So the one of the reasons I have a business is because nobody else would pay me what I'm worth.
They would only pay me what the job was worth. And so, and by the way, I had sales jobs. But this is going to be hard for y' all to believe. When I had sales jobs, I wasn't good at sales.
I just liked it. I wasn't. I sold radio advertising. I was pretty terrible at it. I sold solid waste removal containers. I was pretty good at that. Only because people had to have their trash taken away, right? Like I said, I sold insurance and investments. It took me a year and a half to make my first sale. You might not be good at sales, but guess what? You can get good at sales if you can get good at obsessing over other people's problems instead of using other people to obsess over yours.
And then get good at saying it. What does get good at getting good at saying it look like? Well, one, it looks like don't assume that the person you're selling to.
Has low standards. What does that mean? It means never use profanity when selling. I know there are gurus that do that. I get that. I know Gary Vee and Tony Robbins and Grant Cardone. I get that.
They making enough money that the money it's costing them, they don't miss it. You ain't there yet. Don't use profanity. Don't tell lewd. Don't use lewd humor.
Like, don't make racial slurs like, just don't assume that the person you're talking to has low standards. Do you realize if I'm having a sales conversation with somebody, like for instance, in our, at our country club recently, there was this guy I saw on YouTube and he was selling this coaching program where he teaches people how to buy apartment buildings. Okay, cool. I want. I want to buy apartment buildings. Like, why? Because I would rather have my money sitting in an apartment building making money than sitting in a stupid bank so they can figure out how to flush it all down the toilet. Okay? So they're having this training at my country club. So I go to the country club, I go to the training, and the guy thinks he's relating to us, and he's using profanity, and he's using lewd humor. And I'm like, I couldn't buy anything from you if you were the only one selling it. I'm already done. Like, I'm already done. And some people say, myron, that's just because you're a preacher. No, no, no, no. It's because I'm a respectful human being, and I respect the people whose presence I'm in. And I don't talk to anybody in a way that I wouldn't want my granddaughter talking to me. And she's three and a half. How many are tracking? So. So don't use profanity. You can use it if you want to. Like, don't use profanity on your social media. Like, don't let people find out you're that kind of person. I promise you, they will not do business with. There are people. Now, there are people out there who do business with you anyway, because they're just. Just as suspect as you are.
Right? But the reality is, like, people act like everybody talks like that. Everybody doesn't talk like that. Everybody can talk like that. Now, another thing you want to do. Get better at pronunciation and annunciation. Now, I'm not talking about if you have an accent. Actually, if you have an accent, like a foreign accent, and you're in sales, it is actually an advantage. I know a lot of people don't realize that. Why is it an advantage? Because people who are. Who don't have your accent have to listen more closely to you to understand what you're talking about. It's an advantage. In fact, one of the people who I had the privilege of meeting, y'. All. Y' all may have never heard of him, but you need to go look him up. How many 70s built a $66 million company in the. Stop lamenting your lamentations and thank God for every gift that you've ever received, even the painful ones.
If you will do that, and you will focus on the person, and you'll get better at communicating and you'll read more books and learn more adjectives so that you can speak more clearly and pronounce and announce your words properly. I promise you, sales will go up. And that's how you can get to the place where you don't have to hate sales because it's hard, but you can love it because it's the most elegant and efficient and fun way to get paid that exists. And then lastly, but not least, don't try to make the sale. Like two real good master keys for selling. Number one, love the people you sell to so much that you'd never sell them anything that's not in their own best interest. And number two, like, totally divorce yourself from the need for a yes. If you will do that, more people say yes. Why? Why? Because human nature says, if I make you feel like I need you, you will believe you don't need me. But if I make you feel like I don't need you, you will believe you need me. Either I need you or you need me. So if I don't need you, that'll make you chase me. And. And for. By the way, for any of you who doubt that, let me give it to you like this. Boy meets girl. Boy's crazy about girl. Girl thinks boy is creepy. Can I get a witness? Ladies, wave at me. Okay. Boy meets girl, girl's crazy about boy, Boy thinks girl is crazy. Can I get a witness? Why? Because the girl knows herself. The guy knows himself. Why would somebody be crazy about me? Real talk. Real talk. And so what we've got to do is we got to learn how to lean out. Because when we do, other people will lean in. Hope this helps you stop hating sales so you can start getting paid left, right, and center and get an mba. Massive bank account. Peace out, Cub Scout.
