Lessons On Sorrow As Fuel For Joy | Robin Sharma

Robin Sharma (author of The 5am Club) delivers a Mastery Session centered on an excerpt from Khalil Gibran's The Prophet (read from a 1923 first edition, page 35) that links sorrow and joy. Sharma urges listeners to embrace suffering as a source of authenticity, creativity, and capacity for joy, shares personal anecdotes about growth through hardship, and closes with calls-to-action promoting his book (The 5am Club), mentoring program (Circle of Legends), and charitable giving tied to book royalties.

Sharma, author of the 5am Club and I'm delighted to welcome you to this mastery session. Well, I don't know if you can see this, but yesterday I was given a very precious gift. And it's a copy of one of my favorite books of all time, the Prophet by Khalil James Gibran. And the gift is one of the first editions. In the first printing or the first edition, 2000 copies of this phenomenal book.
Were printed. And so yesterday I was given one of the 2,000 copies of the 1923 first edition. And what I thought I'd do, hopefully to be an instrument of service to you is read one of my favorite passages that has got me through some very difficult times in life. We all have times on the mountaintop, and we all have times in the valley of confusion and heartbreak. And when I go through the winters of my lifetime, I resist them a lot less now because.
I've realized a rich life has the winters and the summers and the autumns and the spring. But when I've gone through times of confusion and difficulty.
The chapter or the passage I'm going to read to you has really.
Reminded me about some noble truths of life itself.
So it's from page 35, as I say, and just. I'll read a little bit. Then a woman said, speak to us of joy and sorrow. And he answered, your joy is your sorrow unmasked. The self same well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears. And how else can it be? The deeper that sorrow carves in your being, the more joy you can contain?
Is not the cup that holds your wine, the very cup that was burned in the potter's oven? And is not the lute that soothes your spirit, the very wood that was hollowed with knives?
When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy.
Isn't that profound? If you look deep in your heart.
Your joy, like the more joy you can hold, comes from the amount of sorrow that has been your burden. And so the ego and our scared selves judge tragedy. Or maybe it's not tragedy, maybe it's adversity as bad. And let us rush away from it. And what I want to offer to you in this episode of the mastery sessions is do not run away from your suffering. Befriend it, appreciate it, embrace it. For there your joy lives and for there your joy lies.
And that's why the greatest amongst us.
Have been hurt. The Most I know in my own life. Any authenticity I have, any vulnerability I have, any relatability I have, any.
Creativity I really have has come not from the times on the mountaintop and all the applause and celebration. It's come from those winters of heartbreak where I felt alone and I felt confused and I felt like I didn't fit into the world. And I felt depleted, exhausted and heartbroken. And the very things that were most hurtful to me, I've realized, are the very things that have become the most helpful to me.
And even the people who have hurt me. I've realized those people were my spiritual friends. I could have pointed the finger at them, I could have blamed them, I could have been angry at them. Instead, what I encourage you is rather than judging people, try to understand people. Everyone does the best that they know how to do based on where they're at. And if they could have done better, they would have done better. Everyone is operating at the level of consciousness they know. And if they were more conscious, more awake, if they were bigger, if they were more intimate with their greater wisdom and their true humanity and that native hero that rests inside every human heart, they would have operated at that level. So anyway, I just wanted to share a little bit from the Prophet with you along with a little bit of my own philosophy so that you can use your difficult times as platforms for possibility so you grow into the artist, productive hero and human being that you're destined to be. If you want to go deeper into my philosophy, deeper into my tactics, if you're interested in how not only the great women and men of the world do it, and the information and mentoring that I've taught to billionaires and titans of industry and a lot of the Fortune 500 enterprises that are iconic. No charge whatsoever. I also am very happy to share with you that a portion of my royalties from the 5am Club goes to help children suffering from leprosy.
