The Big Lie Of Positive Thinking | Robin Sharma

Robin Sharma challenges the common claim that "mindset is everything," calling that belief "the big lie of positive thinking." He presents his Four Interior Empires model—Mindset, Heartset, Healthset, and Soulset—arguing mindset is ~25% of personal mastery while heartset (emotional life) is another 25% and often neglected. Sharma describes an invisible "field of hurt" of suppressed sadness, anger and resentment that undermines performance and creativity, and prescribes heartset practices (feeling wounds, locating bodily sensations, accepting seasons, "spiritual productivity") to heal emotions, deepen creative work, and increase authentic impact. The transcript also includes brief promotional references to his book The 5am Club and a mentoring program (thecircleoflegends.com).

Sharma and welcome to this mastery session. This mastery session is entitled the Big Lie of Positive Thinking. So it's a dramatic title because I believe it's a powerful insight. I'll walk you through in this episode. I love positive thinking. I'm all about radiating positivity. I'm all about elevating your psychology. I'm all about fortifying your mindset. And yet part of me is somewhat exhausted hearing this term and this messaging that is all over social media and all around the world, which is mindset is everything. And here's my take on it, offered with great respect. Mindset is only 25% of the personal mastery equation. Mindset is your psychology. Of course your psychology is incredibly important. You have to bulletproof your thinking. You want to protect your confidence. You want to install the belief systems happiness, productivity, prosperity, impact on humanity. Of course your psychology is incredibly important. But if mindset was everything, then why do most people read a book and the learning doesn't last? If mindset was everything, then why do we go to conferences and after two or three weeks a lot of what we learned does not endure? If mindset was everything, then when we received a new idea from trusted mentor, why do we not execute on it? And that's why I believe this term I've introduced in the 5am club, heart set is the missing link to personal mastery. If mindset is your psychology, well then heartset is your emotionality.
And While mindset is 25% of the personal mastery equation, I suggest to you heartset is the other 25%. I'm going to get into the remaining meaning, 50%. But this word heartset is really what I want to focus on in this episode. And if you bring an open mind to the rest of this time we're sharing together, I believe this episode may just transform your artistry, your productivity, your performance, your happiness, your service to society and your overall legacy. So let me get into this word Hearts. The model I teach in the 5M Club is the four interior empires. And this model is not only disrupting the field of personal development and leadership, but it is creating a mass transformation around the world from people who are actually reading the 5:00am Club and then applying the Four Interior Empires model, a 50,000 foot overview. The Four Interior Empires are mindset, Heart Set, Health Set and Soul Set. And as I've offered to you, mindset is only 25% of the personal mastery equation. And that's why I'm calling this episode the Big Lie of Positive Thinking. If positive thinking was the real Game changer. Then why do so many people who think positively and they do their affirmations and they read the books and they go to live events and they do the online courses and they meditate and pray and journal on positive thinking, and yet three days later, someone cuts them off in traffic and they're expressing road rage, or someone is a little rude to them in a restaurant and they feel bad about it for the next number of weeks or something doesn't go right at work and they get aggravated or irritated or frustrated. Well, that's because mindset is not everything.
Heartset is the other 50%. And heartset, as I've suggested, is your emotional life. You see, you can have a great psychology, a strong mindset, but if your emotional life is full of pain, if your emotional life is full of resentment, if you haven't processed through old heartbreak, if you are full of latent dormant anger, well, then you have what I call. And this is really important. So write this down. You have this invisible, visible, subconscious field of hurt suppressed deep within you. And so you are trying to optimize your mindset by reading the books and being around positive people and seeing the blessing amidst difficulty and doing all the things that you're encouraged to do, but you're not dealing with the second piece, which is your heart set. And so you've got this field of hurt that is suppressed deep within your subconscious, so you don't even know about it. Now, this is really important. That field of toxicity, that field of hurt, that old pain, that old anger, that old frustration from all the things that you've experienced in a human life that hurt you. It's. It's invisible. And yet the people around you are feeling it. It's creating self sabotage. Because your psychology is saying, go out and be legendary. And yet this invisible field of hurt is saying, I'm sad, I'm angry, I'm not enough. There's all this self hatred. And so this is the missing link to personal transformation. Because we get it intellectually in terms of our mindset. We know what we need to do to be exponentially creative, productive, elite performers, to have lives full of prosperity. But we get it in the head and we miss it in the heart because society does not teach us how to purify our heart sets. And so what I wanted to do, and let me just quickly say, the third interior empire is your health set. And of course that's important because energy and vitality is necessary.
For world class, right? And then the final interior empire that I teach in the 5m club that is helping so many people is soulset. But for this episode, let's really focus on heart set. So I want to offer you a primary principle to start the work or continue the work if you're already doing it on your heart set. And this has helped me tremendously. It's helped me shift from being machine in the world, endlessly creative, endlessly productive, endlessly focusing on my high value targets, endlessly achieving to being much more of a human being, someone who sees his work as his craft, someone who sees himself much more of an artist than a exponential producer, someone who understands that real creativity, real productivity, living a real life is a series of seasons. I was running on the treadmill the other day and I was looking out at a forest and I thought, you know, the trees do not resist the seasons. The trees do not tell you, oh, it's wintertime, I don't like this. I need to be in the summer.
The trees just roll with what is. And what I'm suggesting to you is as you start to purify your heart set, you become much braver in terms of feeling the cycles of creativity and the natural order of life. And so when you're in the winter and you feel maybe not as productive and maybe you need more rest and maybe it's a time for incubation of your ideas.
Then you're okay with that. Versus feeling guilty, versus feeling you need to be a machine, versus feeling you're not as productive as you need to be. There's a term. I've never shared this before, but I'm going to share it right now with you in this episode, which is spiritual productivity. See, the world says to you, productivity is getting your high value targets done and filling every hour of every day with your goals and making sure you're running all the protocols that I've taught you in previous episodes and in all my books, whether it's the Greatness Guide or the 5am Club or the Leader who Had no title, I've shared with you all these modalities to be productive in the world. And yet I'm realizing there's another type of productivity, which is spiritual productivity. And so to the ego, it seems like when you're resting and reading and being in nature and having incredibly interesting conversations with fascinating people, or you're just being alone or you're detecting your values. Well, the ego and the messaging of our culture is you're wasting time. That fear of missing out, you're not enough. You're going to be a loser. You're going to be a failure. And I want to remind you, an artist's life, a deep life, a deeply creative life, is a series of seasons. You've got your winters, you've got your autumns for harvest. You have your spring when fresh ideas and new fire start to bloom. And then you've got your winters and guess what? It's all good. So back to heartset.
When you start to so we have this field of hurt and it is made up of the sadness we've not processed and the anger we haven't felt and the resentments that we've accumulated from the time we left the perfection of childhood. You don't get invited to a party when you're five years old. You don't. You feel sad and mommy or daddy, well intentioned, says, be a big boy, be a good girl, stop crying. So we're taught not to feel. Then we're 10 years old, we get a bad mark and our parents say, why do you look so disappointed? And you know, be strong.
And so we swallow that feeling. Then we're in our teens and we get our hearts broken. Or we have a dream of being an astronaut or a coder or a billionaire or a poet and someone around us says, you would never be able to do that. Be practical. And there's more resentment or more anger and we swallow more of our natural feelings. And if you start to do this every day, which really is the majority of people on the planet, that's not a judgment, that's just a.
Observation. What starts to happen is you have this deep field of hurt within our vast subconscious that is in many ways driving our performance and it's limiting our creativity because how can you go out there and change the world if you're full of all this toxic low.
Low frequency energy? And this is why I say this is the big lie of positive thinking. This is why I say heartset is the missing link to personal mastery. Because we all work on our psychology and our mindset and yet so few of us do the profound work on our heartset. So here is a I suggest to you an incredibly valuable insight and it's to heal a wound, we must feel a wound. It's so simple to heal a wound, you must feel the wound. In other words, go back. And it's a process that would probably take you the rest of your life, but it's one of the best processes you could do. And every time you do a little bit of it, you get more of a payoff and you move forward. But start the journey of thinking more about your heartset. And then if someone says something to you that makes you feel sad or makes you feel angry or makes you feel inferior or makes you feel insecure or makes you feel frightened or makes you feel bad.
Rather than blame. Because every time you point a finger at another person, you've got three fingers back at you.
Start looking at what's going on in your body and start. And this is a process. And like any practice, you'll get better the more you do it.
Start locating in your body what's going on and you're going to start to notice. The more you do it, you'll be able to locate maybe some tension in your solar plexus, maybe a sensation in your stomach, maybe it's a, a pain in your throat, which often is unexpressed anger, unexpressed sadness, you've lost your voice. So the more you start to do this, you notice a pain in your throat or if there's a tension in your solar plexus, well, this is your seat of your power. It's because you've given away your power. What I'm suggesting is doing the heart set work begins with, with understanding. You're not just a human doing, you're a human feeling. You know, the great poets and the great artists and the great business builders and the great humanitarians are people who had intimacy and fluency with their feelings. Society shows us these leaders who are yelling, they've got anger in their eyes. I see some of them. And they really, the way they talk and the way they look, they, they don't look like powerful, in control.
Loving, brave leaders like a Nelson Mandela or a Mother Teresa or Rosa Parks or Martin Luther King Jr. These people look angry. And so what I'm really suggesting is when you start to feel, you become more powerful. I'm going to say it again because it's so important. When you give yourself permission to feel, you become really powerful. It takes an incredible amount of courage to feel who you are.
And I should say as well, the more you start feeling, the better work you're going to do, the more authentic your craft will be. The more people will read your work or consume your products and they will feel the feelings and passion and love and caring that you put into your work. This is not a symptom of weakness. This is a symptom of, of excellence and great and vast courage. Hi, it's Robin Sharma and I really hope you're enjoying this episode of the Mastery Sessions. I'm absolutely delighted that people from across the planet are getting such great results from what I'm doing in the Mastery sessions. Well, for a long time we've received so many requests from advertisers to put their ads on the mastery sessions and I have resisted doing so. And yet what I wanted to do very quickly is offer you two resources that I absolutely know will create some marvelous shifts and elevations and results in your performance and in your personal life. The first is my book, the 5am Club. If you have not read it, you really need to know it's one of the best selling books on the planet right now for a reason. It is transforming the lives of everyday heroes and people who want to make their ascent to world class. Definitely read the 5:00am Club. You are going to find it a very special book for your rise to world class. Secondly, for years people have been asking robin, we want you to be our mentor. Robin, we want you to be our coach. We want to learn what you've taught to the billionaires and the NBA superstars and the other professional athletes and the film icons and the titans of industry. Really quickly. All you need to do. If you're interested in me becoming your mentor, head over to thecircleoflegends.com thecircleoflegends.com I've created a world class digital mentoring program where I will work with you each month to help you make your leap and your ascent to absolute world class. Okay, now back to the episode.
Once you start to feel, you start to heal and it really is a process. But like I say, and even in my own life, the more I do my heart set work, the more my work becomes more real and becomes more alive and it becomes more magical. I mean, you may know I spent four years writing the 5am club and for another episode I'll explain the creative sacrifices I made and the walls that I hit when I went to the jagged edges of my limits. But my deep devotion writing that book was to produce a piece of magic. And what I've realized is this. The more I not only optimized my mindset, but the more I purified my heart set so I could really write with love and and right from a place of magic, the more the book took on a magic that I'm now seeing in the world in terms of the way it's transforming its readers. And what I want to suggest to you, with great love and respect for your native heroism within you and that primal genius that lurks at your core that maybe you forgot it's the more you can go deep into your heart set and release those toxic emotions in the field of hurt. The more you can let go of the old pain, let go of the suppressed sadness, let go of all the resentments that you've accumulated. After you've left the perfection of your childhood, you are going to start to uncover all the layers that are covering your genius. Your creativity will soar, your productivity will be epic, your impact will be legendary. You will be the best in the business. And you will not only achieve remarkable things, but you're going to feel sunsets, you'll feel a connection to people, you'll feel a sensibility for what's going on in the world. And that will make you a world changer in your own unique way. Let me leave you with some tactics and hopefully what I've shared with you so far has been maybe a little disruptive, maybe a little challenging to your current thinking. But if it is, then I'm doing my job because I don't want to just offer you what everyone's offering you. I want to offer you things that old.
Repressed emotions and it really helped me. Forgiving. What else? Meditation is incredibly powerful. And it's not only psychological meditation. That's one of the traps we fall into. It's all about the mindset. Do the kind of meditation that I often do first thing in the morning, usually for 45 minutes, where you just be present with what's going on in your body and you breathe into it and you not only think about, oh, I mean everyone is thinking about, oh, you're thinking. Focus on your thinking, focus on your mindset. It's true, right? So that meditation is valuable. But do heart set meditation where you start to notice what are the emotions, where what are the feelings you're noticing and start to release those. And I think those are enough tactics for this episode and I think that's enough information for this episode. And I've challenged you a lot.
