The Power of One - Part 1

This is a transcript of Myron Golden's YouTube video "The Power of One - Part 1." Golden argues that the single most important skill for business and personal success is selling: defined as uncovering and communicating value so people are happy to exchange money for it. He emphasizes listening and asking questions over 'gift of gab,' frames selling as a source of joy and economic activity, and ends with a call-to-action to view Part 2 and engage on social media.

Hello, this is Myron golden and I want to share with you today on this week's show, the power of one. The power of one and one is a very powerful word. It's like a laser targeted, focused word. And the power of one that we're going to talk to you about is in three different areas. Now, I know that sounds interesting. Okay, we're talking about the power of one, but you're going to do three different areas. Yes, there are three different areas that you need to master the power of one. And I'm going to give you an acronym to start with. And that acronym is S I, M SIM and what you want to do is you want to master one of these, one of these. You want to master one of these, get one of these and have one of these. So you want to master one of these, get one of these and have one of these. Now this one is. You want to master one skill, you gotta master a skill. You know what? I'm surprised by the fact that very few people are interested in mastering a skill. People say they want to be in business and they don't even know what the number one skill is that needs to be mastered in business. Every business is in the business of mastering a particular skill. Without this skill, there is no business. The most important skill in business, by far the most important skill in business, is the skill of selling. And I know I talk a lot about selling, but selling is the one thing in the world that changes everything. And if you are going to really make it big in business, you've got to get good at selling. But it's going to be hard for you to get good at selling if you hate selling. But this is a skill you need to master. If you hate selling, I submit to you, you hate it because you've been programmed to hate it. In fact, most people have been programmed to be 40 for what's against us and against what's for us. There are very few skills in this world that you will learn that will be as advantageous and beneficial to you as the skill of selling. Now, before we go into detail into talking about mastering the skill of selling, let me say this. If you're having an adverse reaction to this, which it's very likely that you are, if you're like most people, you're having an adverse reaction to me saying, well, you need to master selling. And because you've been programmed on a subconscious level to hate selling through many experiences that you've had, and I'll share with you what some of those experiences Were. But what you have to do is you have to say, you know what? I'm just going to, okay, check this out. I'm going to set aside my opinions for a minute and I'm going to find out what he's talking about. You want to master the skill of selling. Before you can master the skill of selling, you got to define what selling is. And I like to tell people, selling is not talking people into buying something that they don't want, want, don't need, and can't afford. That's not selling. And it doesn't matter what field you're in, you've got to be good at selling it. If you're a politician, you've got to be good at selling people and voting for you. If you're a parent, you've got to be good at selling your children your values. If you're a teacher, you've got to be good at selling the children.
On the desire to learn. If you're going to be an author, it's not enough to write a great book. You've got to be good at selling people and buying the book and selling people. On reading the book and then selling. Selling people and referring the book to other people. So if you are going to impact your life in a dynamic and powerful way, you've got to master the skill of selling. But in order for you to do that, you have to understand what selling is not. And then you have to understand what selling is. So selling is not talking people into buying something that they don't want, don't need, and can't afford. That's not selling. I like to tell people that selling is this. It's uncovering the value of what you have to offer so well that people are happy that to exchange the money they have in their pocket for the value you've revealed. Selling is uncovering the value. So keywords in the concept of selling, one of the key words is value. You have to uncover the value that you have. When you get good at uncovering the value of what you have to offer so well that people are happy to exchange the money they have in their pocket for the value you reveal, then you've begun to master the value, the art of selling. So you've got to get good at uncovering value. Here's the challenge with that. You can't uncover value to someone until you uncover what's valuable to that someone. And see, most people think that selling is being able to talk well. But selling is not being able to talk well. Selling is being able to Ask questions and then listen. Well, selling is not being able to talk well. People say, oh, I've got the. I'm a good salesperson. I've got the gift of gab. The gift of gab is. Is not a sales quality. The gift of listening is a sales quality. Because if you will listen, people will tell you everything you need to know in order to sell them what you're selling. In order to get them to buy what you're selling, people will give you all the information you need. So selling is not talking people into buying what they don't want, don't need, and can't afford. Selling is uncovering the value of what you have to offer so well that people are happy to exchange the money they have in their pocket for the value you've revealed. And I'm going to tell you something. You don't need to learn 75,000 different selling techniques. You don't need to learn all these different tricks. It's not about tricking people into buying something that they don't want. You don't want to trick people. You want to twist people's minds. You want them to be happy to buy it. In fact, I believe. I love the word happy. That's another key word in selling. Because I believe that salespeople are the sales profession. Is the profession that brings more joy and more happiness into the world than any other profession. I know that's probably going to shock you. No, no, not selling. Yes, selling. In fact, I submit to you that.
You were very, very happy when you bought your first car or your last car, your first house or your last house. That latest outfit that you bought. I submit to you that you were very happy when you bought that outfit. Even a pair of shoes, it doesn't matter what it is. A golf club, for those of you who are into golf like I am, a pack of golf balls. When we go buy something that we want, it's not even the thing that brings us the joy. It's the fact that we had the ability to go and do that thing for ourselves or to go and do that thing for somebody else. Think about it. When you go and buy a gift for somebody that makes you happy, that brings you joy. I believe that salespeople bring joy into the world because people are happy when they go out and buy new things. Now, I'm not saying that money can buy happiness. That's not what I'm saying. And I will teach you in another show down the road how that happiness can actually get you money. But that's A whole other story. But the fact is, when we buy things, it makes us happy. In fact, most people already have plans for their paycheck next week, next month, next year. You already know the stuff you want to buy, the list of what you want to get that you feel like will make you happy. Even though the thing won't make you happy, the ability to get it does bring you some joy. And salespeople make that possible. The other thing that's beautiful about selling is that salespeople make the world go round. The only reason any of us ever have any money in our pocket to do anything we want to do, to buy anything we want to buy, is because somebody somewhere sold something to someone. And you've got to get good at selling. And when you get good at selling, not only will people not resent you for being good at selling to them, but people will love you, they will admire you, they will think, they will praise you literally. They will speak nothing but good of you if you get good at selling them the things they want. So selling is uncovering the value of what you have to offer so well that people are happy to exchange the money they have in their pocket for the value you've revealed. If you're the business owner, if you're a home based business, if you own a home based business where you're a distributor for a company, or if you own a mom and pop shop, or if you're the CEO of a Fortune 500 or Fortune 100 company, it doesn't matter. Your primary objective is to get good at selling. Because if you're the CEO, you've got to sell the people who are your management teams around you on your ideas and why they can take your company to the next level. If you're an attorney, you've got to sell your clients, you've got to sell the jury, you've got to sell the judge, it doesn't matter. Selling is an art form, but it's also a science. And you need to learn both sides of selling. You need to learn both the art side and, and the selling side. If you master this skill, you will be able to write your own check for the rest of your life. A person who can sell will never be out of a paycheck. You may be out of a job. And what I mean by that, you may not want a job, you may want to be an entrepreneur and you may want to go and sell something that you created, but a person who can sell will never be out of a paycheck. So master the skill of selling.
