Clegg (YouTube creator) summarizes leadership guidance from the book Real Time Leadership (David Noble & Carol Kaufman), concentrating on the 'Generate Options' element of the INSIDE MOVE acronym. He explains four stances leaders can adopt—lean in (active), lean back (analytical), lean with (collaborative/caring), and don't lean (reflective stillness)—and argues that mastering these enhances adaptability and wise decision-making in diverse situations.

There's a great book by David Noble and Carol Kaufman called Real Time Leadership and I read it about a year ago. An inside Move, the acronym which stands for Being Mindfully Alert. Generating Options validate the vantage point and engage and Effect Change. I'm going to focus on the Generate options part. This is the piece that I use quite frequently and it's highly valuable. I find it especially useful when one of my leaders comes to me and asks, can you help me? Not quite sure where I need to go with this situation or something along the lines of that they're requesting your time and attention. There are four stances that the author recommends and they are to lean in, which is a highly engaged approach. You're taking an active stance in their challenge and issue number two is to lean back and that's to take a more analytical approach. Observe, collect the data and the information. Number three is to lean with, which is taking a collaborative stance with your leader or employee. This really focuses on caring and connection, which leads to creating the optimal culture that we're all looking for. And then number four, which is the most difficult, which is don't lean. This is when you need to be still disciplined. Be receptive and reflective. Take the time to surround yourself with the wisdom and knowledge that you need to help with this challenge or obstacle. Now, like I said, it's certainly the most difficult one to develop, but it is also very critical that you do. Adopting these four stances will allow you as a leader to be more versatile and responsive to all of the diverse challenges that are getting thrown your way. It highlights the need of flexibility, changing your leadership style based on the situation. The great leaders are able to adapt because every situation is very different and requires a different solution. By mastering these four stances, leaders can be effective while navigating high stakes decisions with greater wisdom and agility.
