You're Committing Adultery And Didn’t Even Know It

A sermon arguing that Christians commit spiritual adultery when they align with worldly ambitions, physical appetites, or the devil's attitudes instead of God. The speaker frames believers as the bride of Christ and identifies three enemies: the world, the flesh, and the devil, then offers five practices to stay faithful: receive the word, seek the kingdom, walk in the Spirit, submit to God, and resist the devil.

I believe that marriage is sacred. I believe that it's awesome. I believe that a man should be faithful to his wife. And I believe that a woman should be faithful to her husband. I believe that with every fiber of my being. I'm going to read something to you here in a minute, and this video probably caught you off guard. Husbands and Wives who Cheat. And then the title of the video. You're committing adultery and you didn't even know it. How's that possible? But I'm going to read a passage to you in Scripture, by the way. I don't believe.
I think that we do a disservice to marriage when we call adultery an affair. Right? An affair. It sounds like a party. Maybe I should bring a gift and invite my friends. Right? It's adultery. Right? Adultery is an ugly word. It was such an ugly word that in the Old Testament, if you were caught in the act of adultery, they would take you outside the camp and stone you with stones until you die. Why? Well, because marriage is a covenant. It is not a contract. A contract is an agreement between two or more individuals based upon a mutual distrust. A covenant is an agreement between two or more people based upon a mutual love and trust. And when two people entered into covenant together, oftentimes what they would do is they would sacrifice an animal. Animal would die. They would sacrifice, each sacrifice an animal. They would walk in a circle around those animals. They'd take a knife in their left hand, cut their right hands. They put their hands together and bind their hands together with a rope. Your blood becomes my blood. My blood becomes your blood. They would exchange covenant promises. They would exchange covenant names. My name would become your name. Your name would become my name. They would exchange covenant vows. I'm going to give everything I have. I'm going to give my resources, my life, my time, my energy, my money, my everything, my knowledge and understanding. I'm going to give everything I have to protect you and yours. If I don't keep my word to you, may what happened to this animal happen to me. And so both people would give that covenant promise. And so there's a saying in societies of honor where they still do covenants, there's a saying that blood is thicker than milk, meaning that blood is thicker than mother's milk. And so when two people entered into a covenant together, their relationship would be closer than their own blood relatives. Okay, so now that we understand that, let's read the passage where it talks about committing adultery. It says, ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that friendship with the world is enmity with God. Whosoever, therefore will be the friend of the world is the enemy of God. Do you think that the Scripture saith in vain the spirit that dwelleth in us dwelleth lusteth to envy, but he giveth more grace.
God resists the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners. Purify your hearts, ye double minded. Be afflicted and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy into heaviness. What is this talking about? It says, ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that friendship with the world is enmity with God? So when a person receives Christ, they enter into a marriage relationship with God, and they open their spirit and receive the seed of the word of God. And it brings forth good fruit in the form of good works in their lives. Okay, so when we enter in that relationship, we become what the Bible calls the bride of Christ. And the Bible says, ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that friendship with the world is enmity with God? What does that mean? That means the one that spiritual people are committing adultery with. They are committing adultery with the three enemies of God. This passage is talking about three different enemies. Enemy number one is the world. Now, we know that the enemies are what? The world, the flesh and the devil. Those are the enemies, but we don't know how they affect us. We know that as words, but we don't know that practically. Right? So how do we practically recognize those enemies? How? If they're an enemy, that means they're going to attack. If they're an enemy, that means they want to do us harm. So how does the enemy of the world attack? The enemy of the world attacks us in the arena of our ambitions. And that is our desire to be somebody or our desire to be thought of by people as somebody. My need for you to think I am awesome is a worldly temptation. It's not a fleshly temptation. It's not a devilish temptation. It is a worldly temptation. And the Scripture says, ye adulterers and adulteresses, know you not that friendship is with the world, is enmity with God? Well, guess what? If I, who, whosoever, therefore will be the friend of the world is the enemy of God. What it's saying is you're supposed to be the bride of Christ, but you're committing adultery. You're opening your spirit instead of receiving the seed of the word of God. You're opening your spirit to receive the philosophies of the world, and you're allowing your life to be shaped and directed by the philosophies of the world system instead of by the philosophies of the word system. You know, there's only one difference, one letter difference in the word word and the word world, and that's the letter L. In fact, I did a video. I think it was called something like get the L out of your life. Right? I think that's. That was the name of something like that. But by the way, if you really want to understand what I'm teaching you better, I just recently did a bit video on a biblical perspective of marriage. If you go watch that in conjunction with this, it'll help you understand this that much better. Okay, so we're supposed to be opening our spirit to receive the word of God. But here's what's sad. Like churches, pastors don't even open their spirit. Like you go to church and you hear the pastor who preaches from about a football game, or he preaches about a nursery rhyme, or he preaches about a movie, instead of using the word of God, you're bringing the philosophies of the world into the church. And just because they sound good to people, open up their spirit. And they're coming from the pastor, so they must be good. And we open up our spirit. And what happens is now we've committed spiritual adultery and cheated on our heavenly husband.
Because we've opened our spirit to receive the seed of the world system and not opened our spirit to receive the seed of the word of God. So the first enemy that we've. And we didn't, by the way, by the way, in marriage, like in your marriage between your husband and your wife, anybody who tries to get you to commit adultery is not your friend. They are your enemy. Because something that you. That God has joined together and that you have spent building your life together, they want to come and destroy that. That is not your friend. Because the scripture says that the contempt that you have when you commit adultery will not be wiped away.
That's strong.
Well.
The world. But then it says so the world. How do we overcome. How do we overcome our desires for the world, for our worldly ambitions? We have heavenly ambitions. What are the heavenly ambitions? Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness. All these things shall be added on you. And by the way, I'm not just going to say that I'm going to go into a Little more detail. Here's why. Because almost I'd say probably 75% of Christians know the Bible says that. And probably 99.9999% of those Christians who know it says it have no idea what it's talking about.
And I know because I ask people when they say, seek ye first the kingdom of God and is righteous. Okay, what's the kingdom of God? Heaven. Okay, wrong answer. But we do have some nice consolation prizes for you in the back. Right. So the kingdom of God. The word kingdom is a compound word, comes from the word king and the word dominion. So the kingdom is the dominion over which God reigns. The dominion over which he wishes to reign is your life and my life. And that only happens when we yield to him. Because he does not subject, he does not subjugate us. He wants us to yield to Him. He's not going to force us. He wants us to love him so much that we yield our lives to his will. And when my ambitions come, I only want to do the things that he wants me to want to do. Now I'm yielded. So I yield my life to God as the sovereign king of my life. When I do that, he gives me an assignment to rule over. And I rule over that assignment with sovereign authority. And if I don't rule over that assignment when I'm yielded to God, then I've abdicated my responsibility as a follower of Christ, as one of the king's kings. So I rule over that assignment. But here's the last piece of it. Don't miss this. I use that assignment that I rule over to serve every human being I come in contact with. And when I see another human being.
The pressing question in my mind, the pressing desire in my heart should be, how can I serve this person? How can I make this person's life better? How can I make this person's day better? Maybe it's a smile. Maybe it's an encouraging word. Maybe it's a handshake. Maybe it's a meal. I don't know what it is, but I know that God put me in this person's path to make their life better. Better. Do you realize if every single solitary person on Earth operated from that perspective, all social ills would be eradicated in one day.
But instead, we're vying for position in the world system instead of yielding to the position God has already given us in the kingdom system. Well, that's the first enemy that we commit adultery with. What's the second one? The adulterers. Adulteresses Know you not that friendship with the world is enemy of God? Whosoever therefore, will be the friend of the world is the enemy of God. That reminds me of Psalm 1. Blessed is the man who walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of scornful. But his delights where? In the law of the Lord. And by the way, the law of the Lord is God's systems, it's his principles, it's his frameworks. In the law of the Lord. In his law that he meditate day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of waters that bringeth forth his fruit and his season. His leaf also shall not wither. And whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
But the ungodly are not so, but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous, but the way of the ungodly shall perish. So we need to make sure that we love God and we love His Word so much that we're not open to the world system. I'm not gonna accept the world's definition of marriage. I'm not gonna accept the world's definition of love. I'm not gonna accept the world's definition of friendship. I'm gonna only go by what God calls that. So next thing it says, it says, do you think that the scripture saith in vain that the spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? The spirit that dwells in us desires to envy. What does it desire to envy? It desires to envy against the flesh. Here's what we see in Romans. Those flesh lusteth against the spirit and the spirit against the flesh. This is what it says in Romans, chapter six. I believe the Spirit, the spirit lusts against the flesh, and the flesh against the Spirit. These are contrary one to another. So when it says, doth not the Scripture, doth the scripture say in vain the spirit that dwelleth in us? The spirit that dwells in us, is the Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit, by the way, I know I'm going to get some flack for this, but it's okay. I didn't put it in the Bible. I just read it in the Bible. And so people talk about, well, after you get saved, you need to receive the Holy Spirit. When you get saved, you receive the Holy Spirit. The scripture clearly says, if the Spirit. If. If any man have not the Spirit of God, the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. So when I receive Christ, I receive the Spirit. Okay, just an aside, but a good aside. So the Spirit and I'll do. I'm going to do a series here in the near future on walking in the Spirit and what it actually means and how you can actually do it and the practical way you actually walk in the Spirit. Okay? Now.
It says, don't you know the Spirit in verse number.
Six.
Verse number five. Do you think that the scripture saith in vain that the spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth and envy? Here's what's really interesting. I'm going to read something from you from Galatians, chapter 5. Galatians, chapter 5. It's such a mind blowing thing that it's like.
Doing the right thing is way easier than doing the wrong thing. People say it's easier to do wrong than it is do right. Well, that's not what the Bible teaches. Bible teaches easier to do right than is do wrong. Watch this. Galatians, chapter five. It says.
In verse.
Number 16, this I say, then.
Walk in the Spirit. What did it say? Walk in the Spirit. Let me ask you a question. How many things is walk in the Spirit? How many things is that? How many objectives is that? It's one. It's one objective. Walk in the Spirit. Here's what it says. Walk in the spirit and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. So the key to not committing spiritual adultery with the enemy of the flesh is to walk in the spirit. Now.
Where does the flesh tempt us, that enemy? Where does that enemy tempt us? So we know the world tempts us in our ambitions. Where does the flesh tempt us? In our appetites, our desire to feel something. See, the world tempts us in our desire to be something. The flesh tempts us in our desire to feel something. Right? And so the fleshly desires. The scripture says walk in the spirit and you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the spirit or desires against the spirit. Flesh desires things the spirit doesn't desire. And the spirit against the flesh. The spirit desires things the flesh doesn't desire. And these are contrary one to the other. So that you cannot do the things that you would. In other words, these are in war with each other. And you can't do the things you want to do. Unless what? You walk in the spirit. Then you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh. Okay, watch this here's what it says.
But if you be led of the spirit, you're not under the law. Now everybody gets us wrong. They say you're not under the law, but you're under. You're not under the law, but under the spirit. Most people, when they. They take a complete ladder. So it doesn't matter what you do. No, no, no, no. So, okay, here's what you have. You have you. You have you and me, we were sinners. We were born sin.
This is sinner, man, sinner, woman, sinner. Right? Then you have this thing. No, I didn't. That was not a good. Okay. We have this thing.
The law.
This is law.
So.
Man is under the direction of the law, but man is also under. Under the commandments of law. Man is also under the condemnation of the law. But man's life is a contradiction to the law. Now, the Bible tells us clearly that God gave us the law as our schoolmaster to bring us to Christ. God gave us the law to show us that we cannot of our flesh, keep the law. Why? Because my flesh wants to break the law. And don't judge me because so does yours. Right? Our flesh wants to break the law. So Christ came and died on the cross.
And gave us the gift of salvation, which, by the way, the gift of salvation is a gift that God gives us. Salvation is not giving your life to Christ. Salvation is receiving the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. It's not giving your life to Christ. Salvation is not a gift we give God. Salvation is a gift God gives us. That's why the scripture says. It says.
The wages of sin is death. But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. For by grace or gift are you saved through faith. And that. That what? That faith is even not of yourselves. It is the gift of God, not of works, lest any mention both. So I didn't even conjure up the faith to believe. God gave me the gift of faith to receive the gift of grace. So it's all God. Are you all tracking? So man tries to keep the law. He can't keep the law. The law says, you better get right. Man says, I can't get right. I know, but you better get right or you're going to pay. Well, I guess I'm going to have to pay because I can't get right. And when man stops trying. When man stops trying to be his own righteousness by fulfilling the law, and what he does is he. I'm going to uncircle that. What happens is he.
He receives Christ when We receive Christ and receive the spirit of God. Here's what happens. God moves us. We become.
He moves us up to here. I'm going to make it over here. I'm going to make it smaller.
And he puts us here. And I'm no longer under the law, but I'm under grace. Now, when I'm no longer under the law, but under grace, that does not mean I. I'm free from the law. That means I'm free to fulfill the law.
Are you. Are you tracking? Because when I was down here, when I was down. When I was down here, when I was down here, I had neither. Oops, I forgot to take that off. Okay. When I was down here, I had neither the power nor the desire to keep the law. Like I desired sometimes, but then not Sometimes not so much. And then I didn't have the power because my flesh likes flesh stuff, right? So. But when I moved up here, here's what it says. When I received Christ Jesus says in Philippians, chapter 2, verse 13. But it is God that works where? In us. What? Both to do. That's the power.
I'm sorry. Both to will. That's the desire or the passion and. And to do of his good pleasure. So I please God.
With the desire, with the grace that he gave me to please him by His Spirit. Are y' all tracking? So now what happens is I'm no longer under the law, but under grace. That's what not being under law, but under grace means. Doesn't mean I'm free from the law. It means I'm free to keep the law. I'm free from sin. And if you don't believe me, go read Romans, chapter seven, and what you'll see is you'll see three laws in Romans, chapter seven. Okay? You'll see the law of the Scriptures, which is from my Father. Okay?
Yeah. No, the law. The law of the Scriptures.
Which is from my master. That's it. Okay. The law of the Scripture was from my master. Then you will see the law of sin, which is in my members. And the last law, the law of the Spirit, which is in my mind.
And the whole Romans, chapter seven shows you how those three laws relate to each other. Okay?
There's no such thing. Understand this now. There's no such thing as absolute freedom.
It can't exist. Why? Because freedom can only exist inside of boundaries. Freedom from anything is bondage to its opposite.
Does that make sense? And so, therefore, there's no such thing as absolute freedom. So now we see that the way that I keep from committing spiritual adultery with the enemy of the flesh is by walking in the spirit. So I receive the seed of the word of God, and then I walk in the spirit. And so I receive the seed of the word of God, which gives me the ability to resist the philosophies of the world. Now I'm no longer committing spiritual adultery with the world. I receive. I yield myself to the spirit. I walk in the Spirit, and so I'm no longer yielding to the flesh. So now I'm not committing spiritual adultery with the flesh. Because here's what it says in Galatians, chapter 5. The rest of the verse it says, or the rest of the verses, verse 16. This I say, then walk in the spirit. You will not fulfill the lust of the flesh, for the flesh lusts against the spirit, spirit against the flesh. These are contrary one to another. So you cannot do the things that you would. But if you be led of the spirit, you're not under the law. The other place, it talks about not being under the laws in Romans, chapter six. Okay, but if you be. Verse 19. Now, the works of the flesh. Works, is that one or more than one? More than one. Let's count them. But the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these? Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envying, murderers, drunkenness, race, revelings. That's 17 things. And then he says, in case I left anything out, and such like. 17 things. And anything like these things.
And such like of the. Which I tell you before, as I've also told you in times past, they which do such things shall not inherit. What? The kingdom of God. I yield my life to God as a sovereign king of my life. I rule over my assignment. When I start yielding to my flesh, I start abdicating my authority over my assignment. Okay, but the fruit of the spirit. Now what? Notice there's only one fruit. The fruit of the spirit, which has many attributes, is love, joy, peace, long suffering, gentleness, meekness, faith, faith, meekness, temperance. Against such there is no law. See how cool that? See how God. Don't you love how the Bible explains itself? If we'll just read it slow enough. Okay, let's go back to. Let's go back to James, chapter four, because then we're gonna look at the last enemy.
Oh, James is in the New Testament, Larry. Okay, there we go. James, chapter four. And here's what it says.
Do you think the scripture saith in vain the Spirit Dwelleth in us lust the envy. But he giveth more grace. What kind of grace? The grace that gives us both the desire and the power to do the things that God told us to do that are contained in the law. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. That's the temptation of the devil. What is the temptation of the devil? So the world tempts us in our ambitions, our desire to be somebody.
The flesh tempts us in our appetites, our desire to feel something.
And the devil tempts us in our attitudes. And that is our desire to be above other people. Do you realize that God didn't put me over God didn't put me here to rule over people. In God's kingdom we rule with people, we rule under God and we rule for the purpose. We rule stuff and serve people. God didn't put people here for me to have them serve. God put me here for you to serve me. But he put you here for me to serve you. So my objective is you. Your objective is me. Right. And we rule over the stuff. The plumber rules over the flow of the water and serves water to the people. The cook rules over the food to serve food to the people. The teacher rules over the lessons to serve truth to the to the students. Right. So we are to rule over something and to use the thing we rule over to serve people. And so it says, resist the devil. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. So submit. What does the word submit mean? Sub means under. Submit means to place yourself under the authority of God and then resist the devil. You don't. The Bible does not command me to rebuke the devil. The Bible commands me to resist the devil. But if I don't submit to God, I can't resist the devil. So God says, submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. But you know what most people do? They submit themselves to the devil and resist God.
They do the exact opposite of what the Scripture says to do and wonder why their life doesn't work. It changes like we do things God's way. It changes everything. Here's what we as followers of Christ need to do. We need to stop committing spiritual adultery with the enemy of the world. We need to stop committing spiritual adultery with the enemy of the flesh. We need to stop committing spiritual adultery with the enemy of the devil.
And make sure that our ambitions are yielded to God, and that our appetites are yielded to God, and that our attitudes are yielded to God, and our lives will be blessed. Thank you for watching. Thank you for liking, thank you for sharing, thank you for subscribing, thank you for doing all the other YouTubey stuff people do, and I look forward to seeing you all on the next video.
