Ep.18 What You Want and Who You Want to Become
20 Jul 2023 · 18 min
Episode 18 ("What You Want and Who You Want to Become") is a podcast lesson on goal-setting focused on mindset: framing goals as who you want to become rather than only outcomes. The host presents a practical exercise (write 25 things you want, including things you already have), compares that list to current life habits, and assigns homework to identify which habits to keep, remove, or replace; this episode is the first of a three-part series covering mindset, phases of goal completion, and a crucial but often-overlooked component to be revealed in the final episode.

[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: By using practical life coaching tools and simple and efficient ways to do money math. Are you ready to invest in yourself? Let's dive into this episode. Hey there Foodie Ozzes. Welcome to the Money's not your Problem podcast. I decided to do a three part series on a topic that I love, which is goal setting. Originally I gave these lessons in my program, the CFM Academy, but decided to put in a podcast format. It is not a secret that as the year progresses, many people lose sight of their goals. They stop going to the gym, they have stopped reading that book, they start back in January, or even they are still paying for the credit card bills from last year's Christmas. Goals for me are just part of life. Once I finish a goal, I start another one. So for me, it doesn't matter if it's the first of the year or if it's a Monday or if it's the first of next month. Whatever the goal ended, I just set another one and keep moving forward. Which is really great because in November I'm setting goals that I'm going to do throughout December and ending in January. So it's just the cadence of my life. Now you might be asking, how do you like goals so much? Well, I can trace that back to when I joined the young Women's program. They had at that time they had a book called Personal Progress and I just love the whole process. Picking a goal, writing out loud, writing all the steps and then accomplishing it. And then I had a signature that showed that I actually finished. It was great. Now some people did it because they wanted medallion. I just like the setting the goal part. Goal setting is so important that even now the church has a program for the primary kids to start setting their own goals. It's less structured than the personal progress, but it's still really meaningful for the kids to pick goals that they want to work on in the four categories that they're indicated or suggested and they go after it. I consider myself a GO enthusiast, so since my days in Young Women's I've been learning and practicing and trying different things and always looking for information to improve the way I set my goals and to increase the chance of success. So what are you going to learn in this episode? And the next two are going to be what I currently use as the most efficient and practical ways to set goals and accomplish Everything that I want. I can guarantee that if you give it a try and pick one, at least one thing that you learn this next three weeks, you're going to be able to implement the financial changes that you want to see in your life that you might have been struggling with. And the best of all, you can use this in any area of your life. In this week's episode, we are going to talk about the mindset and how you can start looking at your goal in a different way so it creates a compelling reason why you want to achieve that goal. On the second episode, we are going to focus on the four phases that are necessary for you successfully complete your goals. And then in the last episode, we're going to be talking about one of the parts that I think it's most fundamental for you to be successful. Yes, we're going to be talking about. Wait a second. You're going to have to stick with me until the last week. What I can tell you, though, it is the most overlooked part of the process, and just fixing that one part can change everything for you. Are you as excited as I am? And even if you are not, I am for you, for the changes you're going to be able to have in your life and get closer and closer to the way you want your life to be. So let's dive in, into this week's episode. What do you want in deciding?
Good morning, everybody. We're here to talk about goals. Yes. Beginning of the year. You know how it is. Everybody's talking about goals, but we already in February. Why are we doing this now? Well, because goals shouldn't be something that you just set in the beginning of the year and let it go the rest of the year. Right. I guess I shouldn't say should, but everybody has that expectation that you have to set goals in January and then they just almost forget it for the rest of the year. Now, it's hard when we are trying to do things differently, and it's normal for us to just fall off the wagon. Right. And stop doing the things that we set out in the beginning of the year. Actually, New Year's resolutions, 98% of people, that's 92% of people that set them, don't continue with them, don't follow through, don't achieve them. Only 8%. Well, maybe we can increase that number if we put some things in place. Right. All right. So today we're going to be talking about, specifically about becoming. How can you frame your goals in a way that helps you achieve them? You need to Have a compelling desire, a compelling reason why you're doing the goal and why you want to achieve whatever you want to achieve. So the first thing that we're going to do and something that I learned from my teacher, Brooke Castillo, is a list. Okay, so let's do a list of 25 things that you want. Okay, so what are you talking about? Yes, sit down, put it on paper. These are 25 things that I want to have or I want to achieve in my life. So a way for you to do this, just free write it, no time limit. Well, I would say give yourself 10 minutes to do this. Write it down. Now, we look at when we're doing this, not just material things. Let's look at what you want for your life or what are some of the things that you would like to become. When we have that reason that becoming someone who does those things or becoming someone who's good with money, then it helps us to give us a filter in how to make the decisions of our daily lives. Because that's okay if you set the goal or you put something that you want to accomplish, but then you're not exactly sure how you keep that commitment throughout the days on the daily habits. Because that's what really makes a difference. It makes a difference in the day to day. Doing the little things every day, that's going to compound and that's going to become the goal that you want to achieve. Right? So this is our first exercise. So get a piece of paper and thinking about the person they want to become or the person that you want to be. Write down 25 things that you like, that you would like to get or do you like to accomplish. And what is important here is I'll give you a little record, not requisite, but like a little framework. Not only write things that you do not have right now that you do not currently have, look at your life and the things that you have in your life right now that you want to keep. Right. Because we are making that decision every day. When we keep something or we keep doing something, then it's because we want it. Now if we don't want it, then we don't put on our list. So go ahead and write down 25 things that you want, even the things that you already have. So let me give you an example. Let me turn over here to my. My board. So if I'm going to write it down when you buy things that I want, either if I want to achieve it or if I want to get it right, money purchasing or not purchasing Right. Or because. So buying now, let's put get. Right. Something that you want to get or something that you want to become. So in my case, let's say I want to be. I want to increase my spiritual connection with God, so I want to increase my spirituality. That's. That comes from my desire to become a disciple of Christ, become a Christlike person. So that's something that I already do, that I already strive for. And so that's something that I want to keep. It's something that I'm doing right now that I want to keep. So I want to be more Christlike. Some people that's not part of their life anymore, they don't want to be close to God anymore. They don't want to go to church. They don't want to those things that would support their spirituality. So then they will not put this on the list. Now, if you're here, we want to. And you are, like me, that want to increase our spirituality. This is something that I want to keep. So it could be like, I want to go to the temple every week. It could be a goal that you would have. One of my goals is to go to the temple every other week so I can be. Because be more Christlike is something that I want to become. But it's very. It's a little tricky to. It's vague when you're creating a goal. Right. And eventually we're going to use this list to create our goals. So maybe this would be more like, I want to read my scriptures consistently. So five out of seven days of the week, I'm gonna sit down and read my scriptures. So right here I would put. Go to the temple every. Every other week. Okay, so then let's do the next one. Another one for me would be in becoming a better mother. I would say, I want to. I'm already a mother, but I want to keep being a mother. Right. Something simple like this. I'm going to say be a mother. So you can write over there, you want to be a better mother. But you see how that's vague. When we create the goal, we have to decide exactly what this being a better mother looks like. So maybe let's say right now you're letting, like me, you're letting work take over a lot of the. A lot of your time. So you want to spend more time with your kids. So you can write that down. All right, let's see. I want to go visit the temple in Italy. So this would be a buying thing, right? It's a. Purchasing an experience I want to go to Italy to see the Italy temple. And the visitor set to Italy is specifically for the. All right, so sit down. And there's no limit on this. There's no expectations. Just write anything that comes to your heart. Those desires that we have in our heart are good things are given to us. If something, if you're drawn to something that aligns with the scriptures, that aligns with being, you know, a good person, and anything that's good comes from God, right? So if you're, if you're in line with the scriptures, aligned with the commandments, and you know, it's something that it's. It comes, it was given to you. It's part of your essence, your. Your divine nature. And if you're drawn to something that is a good thing, if it's aligned with the. With the gospel, right? So if you want, if you love animals and you want to get a puppy, or if you. You want to open a business, so those things are good things and they're given to you for a reason. Now, not everything that's good that we want or we desire, we're going to accomplish is going to depend on us. But those desires, those righteous desires of our hearts are given to us, and they came. They came with us or they develop over time, right? So go ahead and write those 25 things down. That's our first step in establishing what we want to do. I'm going to give you some time. No, actually, I'm not. You stop the video and you continue watching. All right, so once you write your list of 25 things, then you're going to see. You going to compare that with what you have currently. Right? So if you run on your list that you want to spend more time with your kids, are you doing that right now? Well, I'm not. So how are you going to create? How are you going to transform this into a habit in your life? But it's very important that you did this first so you know what's in your heart and what are the things that you truly want in your life. Because a lot of times we play small, we follow a path that everybody has done before. So the things are expected from society or the things that just because someone else did it, you just keep doing the same thing. And then sometimes we don't stop and think exactly what we want for our lives. So once you did this, then you're going to look at your life right now and you're going to decide if, what do you have in your life right now? What are the things that you're doing, the things that you're thinking, the things that you're getting, the results you're getting right now in your life are the things that you truly want. What are the things that you want to keep, and what are the things that you don't want to keep, that you want to replace? Because remember, once you decide that you don't want something in your life, then if you remove that habit or that thing, you have to put something in place for, for you to make that change. If you don't, if you just leave empty space there, it's much easier for you to just go back to do what you were doing before, and you're going to continue getting the same thing you got before. So let's look at, how does that look like? So once you wrote your 25 things, stage one, to get or you want to become, then you're going to write down everything that you do, everything that, that you have in your current life right now. So what I do or have in my life now, with that, with that question in mind, with that prompt in mind, I want you to write down, look at every part of your life and see if you want to keep all the things that you're doing or the things that you have right now. In my case, let's say I am not sleeping seven hours a night, okay? So I'm sleeping about five and a half hours a day. Okay? So do I want this? I do not want this in my life. So that would be something that I would add on the 25 list that I want to spend. I want to sleep for seven hours every night or I have a good night of sleep. And I would not put on this list because this is what I do have. Well, it is in the list. This is what I have right now, but that's not something that I want.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: So.
So then I would say, I do not want to keep this. So then you write all of them and then you say, no, I don't want to keep you. No, I do not want to keep this. So two, let's see. Well, I guess you don't have to put numbers on this one. Just write it in. So right now I have a coaching business. So in my case, I do want to keep my coaching business. As a matter of fact, I want to grow my coaching business. So check. I want to keep that. And you would do that with every part of your life. This might take you about 20 minutes or so. So go sit down somewhere super nice outside. Well, it's freezing over here. So you might not want to sit outside, but you might want to go to, I don't know, a place that you like to have a dessert, sit there and do this and have yourself a little dessert. Maybe you don't want to have dessert. So then you write, I eat it with dessert. So maybe you just want to cut down on how much dessert to eat. So you would do that. Now, with those two lists in mind, after you look at the things that you current have in your life, then you're going to look at the things that you truly want and you're going to see the overlap. What are the parts of your life that you already have and you want to keep it those you already doing it. So unless you want to improve how you're doing it, then you can just keep it and no problem at all. And you can create your master list of the things that you already have. Or you can do a two column thing and say, hey, this is what I have. You can do this side by side. This is what I have and this is what I want to keep, and this is what are the things that I want. And then you're going to decide the next step is going to be all the things that you don't currently have or that you're not that you want to become and the things that you have it but you don't want it and see if they connect. Because if my case, I'm sleeping about five and a half hours per day and I do want to sleep seven hours a night. So then you see the disconnect there, right? So I need to eliminate one and put the other one in place. And that's what we're going to do on the next workshop. All right, so this is your two assignments for today. First, write your 25 things that you want to get or you want to become, including things that you already have in your life. And then the second list you're going to create is what do I have or do I do in my life? Currently everything that you're doing right now or being right now. So if you are being, you scream at your kids. You can write that, because if that's a habit for you, then you have to write down, right? This is the result that you're. This is what you have in your life right now. And then you decide, do I want to continue yelling my kids. So, so analyze your list and see the things that you want to eliminate. Right? It's homework for you guys. I'm going to put a worksheet for you to do this exercise. And then on the next workshop, we're going to talk about how to use the main list, our master list, to decide on the goals and what are the process to get those things done. All right.
