Madeline argues you need to get your physical and emotional health right before chasing financial goals. She covers sleep, exercise, nutrition, and relationships, citing neuroscientist Pedro Calabres on how circadian rhythm affects everything else.
Foreign welcome to the Money Style youe Problem podcast where every week we talk about how you can become good with money in your pocket and in your mind by using practical life coaching tools and simple and efficient ways to do money math. Are you ready to invest in yourself? Let's dive into this episode. Welcome to another episode of the Money's not your Problem podcast. I'm Madeline, your host, and I have a question for you. Have you ever wondered why you go to sleep late? You eat bad, you don't drink enough water, you wake up in crazy hours and you feel horrible during the day? Well, that's what we're going to talk about today. Many of you probably already done this before. I have several times where I stay up late, I don't eat well. Keep scrolling social media for, I don't know, 40 minutes before deciding to go to bed. The eyes are heavy, but I still need to see one more thing. So useless. And then I go to sleep. But then you are not relaxed. Your brain just keeps going, going, going super fast. By the time you fall asleep, it's already almost time to get up and. And then you have to wake up because life goes on. And why do we do that? We do that because we can. We do that because it's easy. We do that because we put our instant pleasure ahead of our future and what we really want. But what's the problem with that, you might ask? Well, the problem with that is acting this way. Our bodies are not prepared for achieving goals, setting targets, and going after the things that we really want in this life. A few episodes ago, we talked about setting goals and look at our identity and how to look at our goals, define what we're going to do. But there's a problem here. If you're going to be good with money this year, and if this is your goal, then the first step that you need before you even set the goal is to be feeling well physically, spiritually, mentally, socially. If we're not feeling well, we're not able to focus on other things. If we're weak, if we're tired, our brain doesn't focus, we get really irritated and annoyed and it makes it so hard for us to resist the temptations to avoid the immediate pleasure that we're getting with something over the long term. Benefit from the future. Now this is so important that many doctors and health experts and brain scientists study this in depth to determine how is the best way for us to achieve our goals. They actually call this the seven equilibriums or seven balances. I learned this From Professor Pedro Calabres, who is a neuroscientist from Brazil. And I've done several courses with him. But of course, he's not the only one. So if you heard this before, it's nothing new. I just wanted to bring that up because I didn't know. So this might help someone out there. So Professor Pedro Calabres, he explains that in order for us to have high performance in whatever we're trying to do, it is important to have a life that maximizes the brain for excellence. We have to take care of our brain in order to perform at our best in the things are trying to do. If we are not taking care of our health, our emotional state, our spiritual state, and the other balances that we're going to talk about today, making a transformation in how you deal with your money and who you want to become in relation to your money is going to be really difficult. So our first balance, it's actually called a circadian rhythm. Have you heard of that before? I hadn't. And as a matter of fact, I couldn't even say that in English when I first heard of that. I tried to tell that to my husband and he was like, what are you saying? And then finally he figured out because I spelled it out and it's like, oh, circadian rhythm. Yes, that's the one. When you take care of this balance, you have more energy, you'll be more focused, you get better results, and your brain will be sharper so that you can perform better in your career, in your relationships. And the other areas of our lives are so important. And of course to make that change you want to make in your financial life, the circadian rhythm then is nothing more than a biological cycle. In the past, instead of people wearing a watch at their wrists or phone, it was the sun that controlled their activities. The sun that defined when the day was starting. Well, the sun still does, still decides when the day begins and when the day ends. So based on the sun cycle, it was how people went about balancing their daily routine. Because of our busy lives, we often don't even pay attention to the sun cycle. We stay up until like 2 o' clock in the morning, then get up around 5. We don't sleep well or we sleep during the day. And our brain does not perform in the same way as if it had followed the sun cycle if it had gone to bed on a regular time, waking up at the same time. And it creates a routine that would have been much more beneficial for us. The important thing is to realize that when we have the circadian rhythm, we generate a daily routine, a constancy. The sun always rises at the same time, around the same time, and always sets around the same time. So what would be best for us to do to follow the same type of routine. When we follow the sun cycle in our lives, we have regularity and to maintain this. You might think it's a little boring, right? To always do the same things around the same time. But for our bodies and for our brains, having this routine helps us to perform at a higher level, at our best, optimal level. So the most we can go to bed around the same time, wake up around the same time, have meals around the same time. It may sound a little boring, but again that's the best for our brains and for our performance. One of the signs that you have your circadian rhythm in order is when you start waking up by yourself around the same time. I used to get so mad when I was growing up and it was vacation time, I didn't have to wake up, but I would always wake up around the same time. Made me so mad. But it's because my body was used to the rhythm of the day and it was already rested so it didn't need to stay sleeping longer. Okay, so routine is important, but how do we maintain this routine? What is the secret to keep it? Well, the secret to routine is learning to say no. Often our bodies are used to going to bed at a certain time and then friends come and say, hey, let's go out for dinner. And you stay up much later, you're not enjoying yourself because you're super tired, you want to sleep. And that's a way for your body to tell you it's the end of the day. Why are we still awake? I have a friend that she is the perfect example for this. She and her husband wake up very early in the morning every day. So as a consequence they go to bed very early. So around 8:39 o' clock at night, my friend is already in bed. Usually when we make plans, just her and I, we always try to make our plans really early in the day because I know she goes to bed early. Now sometimes she wants to make an exception and go out to dinner with us and other friends. And it's usually late, but, but past a certain time she starts getting really tired and it's not good for her. That's how she knows that her body is accustomed to a certain routine and it doesn't like when it gets out of the routine. But she knows most of the time she says no for invitations that are late in the day. I know. I've tried to take her to go to a play with me or to go to a movie, and it's really difficult for her. So she's right. She tries to respect her body, and we should do the same thing. When we know something is not good for us, we should just say no and respect our limits. Now let's talk about sleep. Sleep is very important. The amount of sleep that we get is really important. It's one of those things that we know what we should do, but we don't. I am terrible at that. I keep working and doing other things. And it's usually when the house is quiet, the dogs are asleep, kids are asleep, and I feel that I have that time for myself. But then what I end up doing is not getting enough sleep for the next day. We know that sleep is very important, is during the sleep time that our dopamine production happens for the next day. It is also when learning takes place, where we make connections with the knowledge that we learn with the knowledge that we already had. Just like exercise. When we go and exercise our muscles, you need that rest day so they can reconstruct stronger. And if none of this makes sense, well, you know how it feels when you have a bad night of sleep. You don't pick attention. You cannot focus. I get migraines when I don't have enough sleep. It's just awful. And you also need a routine before you go to bed. That's a way for you to tell your body that it's time to shut down, that we're gonna rest and get prepared for the next day. When we were young mothers and we have our little kids, we always create a bedtime routine to help them go to sleep. Why don't we do the same for ourselves? I remember with my girls, we used to have dinner, and then after that, there was a little bit of playtime. Go give a bath and then put them in PJs. Go read a story, and then finally put them in bed. And hopefully they would stay in bed. I remember when my oldest daughter was about, I don't know, two and a half, three, we put her in bed, get her all prepared, close the door, and then we will go to sleep. And in the middle of the night, I woke up and she was staring at my husband just like one of those horror movies. It was creepy. So then what we did, I got out of bed, took her back to bed. I'm glad we don't have those things happen. Anymore. Now, one of the things that Professor Pedro Calabres talks about in relation to sleep is when we have the sunset, then we should start turning off lights that are artificial, especially the ones that come from the ceiling. And by 10 o' clock, no lights on whatsoever. Very difficult to do, but the best for our brains. And this is a very hard thing for me to do. And I'm not trying to tell you to do something that I don't do. I actually, after I took this class and I started learning about the circadian rhythm, I started to focus more on my sleep. So I go to bed, try to go around 10, 11 o' clock at night. I still have to wake up at 6 because the dogs are up and I have to take them outside and get ready for the day. But it has been better for me in terms of how I feel in the morning when I sleep more. And it's not just once. It has to become the habit of going to sleep and have that number of hours and the number of hours that you should have. There's no should. You have to try that on your own. You have to figure out what's best for yourself. We love Jocko Willink, the Navy Seal and his deal was always waking up at 4:30 in the morning to work out. He is very clear about that. He doesn't need a whole lot of sleep every night. But that's not common for everybody. Some people need more sleep than others. So you have to figure out what's best for you. The best way to figure this out is to try it out, the number of hours and see how you feel the next day. In the beginning I got a Fitbit, I got a whoop to track my sleep and see what was the problem with my sleep. Well, the problem is I don't sleep enough. And it helps to see what's the quality of sleep I'm getting. But nothing's gonna change if we don't start being intentional about going to bed at a certain time and waking up a certain time and making that into a routine and having enough sleep that we need the environment where we sleep. It's also important. Have you noticed that if you go to the beach and you don't have air conditioning on and it's super hot, you don't sleep well. So the best environment would be a cool room with no lights on. That would be the best situation for you to have a good night of sleep. So based on the circadian rhythm, this what a perfect day or an ideal day would look like. Based on the sun cycle. Remember, first you wake up at the same time. After you wake up, you drink plenty of water, A lot of water. Our brain is made up of 75% of water. So once you've spent seven or eight hours sleeping without hydrating, it's very important. It makes a big difference difference if you drink water. In fact, I was going to skip the whole water thing, but water is very important. We need to drink water all day long. I did a challenge once where you have to drink a gallon of water 75 hard, and I couldn't do it because that amount of water is too much for my body. And Andy Frisella does not want you to move anything, change anything on the challenge. So the same amount of water that my husband would need was the same amount of water that I had to drink. I couldn't do it. I got so sick after I quit. My friend that goes to sleep early, she was able to do it. She got her brain to accept that she was gonna drink a whole gallon of water every day for the five, the 75 days. I don't know how she did it. I was just so sick. I couldn't do it. What we need is the amount of water is based on a little calculation that you can do. It's get your weight divided by two, and that would be the many ounces of water that you should take. So let's say if someone weighs 120 pounds, they should drink 60 ounces of water. I actually, after this lesson, I started being better about drinking water because I would go the whole day without drinking any liquid, any water, anything. And I know that's not good for our bodies, and probably that would increase my headaches as well. So I actually got me a water bottle that tracks how much water I drink all day. And from time to time, it blinks to let me know that it's time to drink water. I actually. I didn't even know that I was gonna like this bottle because I usually don't like the taste of water that comes from water bottles that those reusable ones. But I actually really like this one. It keeps the ice cold all the time. And I lost it the other day, and when I found I was so happy, that was still around. So if you want to get this water bottle, it is called Hydrate Spark. It's not cheap, but it helps me be accountable to how much water I drink, because not only tells me that I have to drink water, it keeps track of how much I drink. I just need to put the water there. I Drink it. And it tracks for me, me. So I like that now going back, you woke up at the same time you drink water. One thing that he recommends is to do some stretching. If you have a pet, you know, a cat or a dog, when you let them in the morning, they start stretching. So that's very important for our bodies too. So five minutes stretching in the morning, that's really good. And he also talks about going and seeing, staying out in the sun right as the sun rise, or as soon as you can to be out in the sun for about 15 minutes. I leave too early in the morning, so the sun is not out yet. But I've been being very intentional. When I get home, I go sit outside for 15 minutes in the sun. Sun is really important for us. And if you don't get enough of the vitamins and other things from food, that's a good time also for you to take your supplements, right in the morning. So go stretch. Go stay a little bit in the sun and then take your vitamins and supplements. Well, then you go have breakfast. Some of those supplements you gotta take with food, otherwise you feel sick all day. And he talks about how what we eat in the morning is very important. Actually, anytime that we have empty stomach, we should stay away from the carbs and from the processed food and from sugar, because that's going to give you that spike of energy, but then you're going to have a crash. Actually, he talks about the importance of the breakfast is to have some protein and some good fat in the morning. Or anytime you have empty stomach, he saves his pasta with bread or something like that that he's going to eat towards the end of the day because it's gonna make him tired. And of course it makes sense. We want to be tired in the evening so we can sleep better. Of course you're not gonna eat right before you go to bed. You gotta give a couple hours before you go to bed. Saving that heavier meal towards the end of the day is gonna help you feel tired when it's time for you to go to bed. Now, you might say that you're gonna put on weight if you eat pasta towards the end of the day. Day. Well, in fact, what makes us fat is the energy imbalance and not the timing of meals and the amount of calories that are going in that are greater than the calories are coming out. So if you consume more than you expend, then you put on weight. Something important in relation to our food is to not eat until we're exploding. So eat about 80% of satisfaction that we're satisfied with the food. It's good. We still could eat a little more, but if we stop there, it's going to be great. And of course, the most difficult thing is for us to figure it out that 80%, when it's time for you to stop eating, even though the thing is to taste good again, it's all based on your why. Why you're eating the food and why you're gonna stop. And that's gonna help you make decisions. I know that sometimes I used to go to Brazil and I would go out to eat and I'll stuff myself silly because I have that thought that I would never. I wouldn't eat that food for another year until I would go back there. It's like that was gonna be my last best meal in the world. Which is not. It's just food. And food's supposed to be good for us and enjoyable, but also just fuel for our bodies. Finding a balance would be best for all of us. Another thing is important is to exercise. He recommends exercising within the first eight hours that you're awake. But if you can't make sure that you exercise, that's more important than the timing. And just to finish with the circadian rhythm when you start correcting it, it helps also to decrease problems that you have with your mental health, such as depress and anxiety. Okay, so that was the first balance. The second one is going to be exercise. Exercise movement. That's really important. It is very important for the maintenance of our neurons. Exercise, the basis of life. And if you combine aerobics with resistance, which is bodybuilding or lifting weights, that would be the ideal. So it's recommended that we have 300 minutes of cardio at level two, where you can still talk, but you're getting. Getting a little more winded when you talk. And resistance training at least three times a week with some rest days in between. Now, remember that I am not a doctor. I am not prescribing anything to you. I'm just sharing the things that I learned from that class. And these things are making a difference in my life, helping me feel better so I can accomplish the goals that I want. Now, in relation to exercise, I was doing some heavy lifting weights, and I end up up breaking my back a couple years ago. Not very fun. I had to get off my back for the longest time. Couldn't exercise. I barely could walk for a few months. Then I started doing some physical therapy. And then eventually they gave me okay that I could go back and start lifting weights. Now I do very carefully. I get exercises or ergo machines that I don't have to put string in my back. I still exercise the muscles that I want, but not counting on my back to hold all the support. Sometimes I'm still walking second at the gym and I see someone doing the same lifting the way I was not paying attention to their back. And I just want to stop them and say don't do this way, you're gonna break your back. But each person is doing their own thing there, which is different than Brazil. In Brazil they have the trainers that just walk around and make sure that people are using the machines the correct way. Here they don't even care. I actually, the day that I hurt my back, I felt nobody even stopped to come see what had happened happen. And everybody can tell when you're not doing something right on the machine. Alright, so balance number three is food. We already talked a little bit about eating. The nutritional balance is very important now people say for you to have Mediterranean, that's the best diet for you. The important thing is for you to eat real food. When we just eat junk, then you are feeling junky, you're not gonna feel well. The most last process, the most natural, close to what the original food was the best for us. Make sure that you cut down on ultra processed foods. I understand they're super palatable, we like them and it's difficult. But when we eat real food, we feel better and taking care of our bodies, what we eat. When we do that, we'll perform better and we'll be able to achieve the transformations that we want to make. And believe me, this episode is more for me than for you guys. I eat horribly, I eat in the car all the time. So what I have to do is start. Okay, now take a step back. What am I going to do? What am I going to eat? You have to pre plan when you make that decision that you're going to eat better. Then you start aligning yourself and trying to make better choices. But if that's not important to you, then you're just going to continue eating where you're getting and not feeling your best self. So I need this more than anybody. And as we talked about before, some people say, oh, you're going to spend too much money to eat well. Well that's not true. You just spend money in a more conscious way and you don't buy things that are going to make you s Eventually. This friend of mine that she goes to bed early, she rather spend money now Buying good food and good ingredients than later on having to go to the doctor with so many problems. And you're gonna have to spend money with medication and who knows what. So there's a cost, but you can have both. You can eat well and not be completely broke, and you also can spend a bunch of money in junk. But then you're gonna feel sick, and you're gonna have to spend money later on with surgeries and going to the doctor and all sorts of medications. So it's a choice there. And what's important, too, is to see what helps your body to feel well. Some people cannot have gluten. Some people cannot have milk or dairy. You have to learn your body and know what's best for you. For a while, I did an elimination diet, and I was eating no sugar, no flour. It was during COVID which was so easy because I was just home all day. And. And that helped me so much with the headaches, increased the threshold of the pain. So then I had less crisis. So what I know for myself is that I have to cut down the sugar and I have to cut down the flour. And it's difficult because I'm always on the run. But that's an excuse. If I want a better relationship with my headaches and I want less pain, then I have to take care of what I eat. I know my triggers. I know the things that made me sick, and they're not good for my body. So I know those things. Things, and I just have to do it. So how about you? What are some of the things that you know that are not good for your body, but you're still eating them or you're still drinking them? Make sure that you look through what you're eating and what you're drinking. Is that making you perform at a higher level? If not well, make that decision. All right, Balance number four. He talks about its supplementation because we don't eat or drink well, then it's important that we supplement the things that we need for vitamins and our supplements. I read a book by Dr. Daniel Amen. He's also neuroscientist, and he gave some instructions and some of the supplements based on my age, based my situation being a woman. And so that's what I follow. So you probably need to go see your doctor and get things tested and see what they recommend that you should take. One thing that really helps me, because I take all the medication for my migraines, is to take magnesium to help with my gut. Yes, I. If without magnesium, I wouldn't go to the bathroom for, like a week. So I heard this on a podcast, and it was really good because I tried out and it worked out for me. And it was not because my body was had a problem. It's because I was taking the medication. The medication was clogging me up. So I started testing the amount of magnesium. I take just the pill, magnesium, it's 500 milligrams. I take about three of those, and then that solves a problem for me. And you know how important it is most. Most. The disease that we have is starting the gut. And if you don't take care of that, then you're gonna have other issues. In my case, my migraines are directly related to that as well. So I take care of that. And if I eat more flour and sugar, mostly the flour, if I eat pizza or something, then I take 2000 milligrams of magnesium to help me go the bathroom the next day. How wonderful this talk about poop. All right, we'll go right into the next element, balance, which is the emotional balance. You look at everything that you have to do. When everything is urgent, nothing is actually urgent. We are always busy on a go. We live a life always thinking that everything is important, that we have to do everything at once. Right now, in reality, the important thing is to sit down, lose your emotional intelligence, and find harmony in the things that we have to do. I like the idea of seasons. When you have little kids kids, then you're really focusing on the little kids and taking care of them, and it takes a lot of care. Last year, we had my youngest daughter. As a teenager, she had some mental health issues. When it got the worst, I had just signed up with a health coach to work on my form and to be able to be stronger. I was not able to focus on both things. I had to give my attention and care to my daughter. So I had to give up a little bit on going to the gym and working out. She would go to a school that was a little far away, a clinic that was a little farther away, and I would rather drive and take her everywhere than go to the gym at that point. So I would save time and would go walking when I was able to. But my priority was my daughter. So you have to find that harmony and seasons are the best thing for me. You can see some people that have books coming out, and then they have this very intense time before they release the book and get their New York Times bestseller. And then after that, they take a break. So it's A season. And the family knows that's a season. Parent is busy doing something and then it passes that time, then you focus on something else. So if right now you're feeling frazzled, burned out, you gotta take some time, sit down and analyze and see how you feel. Write it out down, do lots of thought. Download. This will help you to refocus. Focus. Every time I make a decision based on emotion, I don't do a best decision. So you have to center yourself. And if you're just going, going, going, you're not going to be good for yourself or for the people around you. So learn to stop, pause, center yourself, think about what you're doing. And in the case of money, this is very important because if you are not emotionally centered, you're going to overspend. You're going to try to get that dopamine hit by buying things that you don't need or buying things that you don't have the money for, and then later going to feel regret and you're going to feel worse and beat yourself up. So remember, emotional stability is very, very important. All right, next balance is interpersonal balance. It's about creating connection, developing relationships with other people. Lately you've been heard a lot. We've been hearing a lot about people that are just alone. I actually heard that the new program for the institute is that they actually want the leaders to create weekly activities so the young adult can see each other, can go out and hang out. A lot of the boys are just sitting their homes, just playing video games with each other. The girls are frustrated because they don't get asked out. And it's just because it's difficult sometimes to start making friends. I think the older that we get as an adult, it's harder for you to make friends because before you were put in situations where you had to make friends. That was just part of the deal. And then when you're adults, you can just completely seclude yourself and not make any friends. But having relationships is really important. It's key. And working with other people and relating to other people, talking to others, those relationships are important as well. We are on this earth to help each other. And how do we know if we can help another person if we don't talk to them? Actually, it's one of the most important things when people get hired is to be able to relate to others, to be able to work as a team, team. And we can learn that. Those skills we can learn. We might have our preferences to work by ourselves, but having that skill of Being able to relate to other people and talk to others, listen to what they have to say. It will help us tremendously in our careers at home, at church and all the other areas of our lives. And it does take time. When we invest in other people, when we want to maintain a relationship, it requires us to reach out, to go after, to pay attention to other people and what they like, what, what do they want, what they need. It help us to develop the Christlike love to look for others and opportunities that we can serve. In a perfect world, people will come after you and invite you to go out all the time. But sometimes you have to be the one that reaches out. I always, when I go to Brazil, I reach out to people that I want to see. Those people that I want to see, I go after, I don't wait for them to call me. And that's something that I do. Just decided for myself that if someone is important to me, I go after them and that's it. A lot of times people get really frustrated because they go into the relationship expecting the other person to do certain things. And when they don't do it, then we get frustrated, that person gets frustrated. Understanding that you cannot control other people that manipulate and make them do something for you, that's not a real relationship that you want to keep. So reducing the amount of expectation you have for a person, person and increasing the amount of time that you spend developing good relationships and Christlike love, it's one of the best things that you can do for your interpersonal life. And people are so important because many opportunities are going to open up to us because you connected with other people and you might have heard that you are the average of the five people that you spend the most time with. Well, I don't know if that is really true, but I know that the people that are around you, they either going to bring you up or they're going to put you down, down. So it's important that you choose the people that you hang out, those people that are gonna speak life into your life, that they're gonna encourage you. And you can encourage them as well that way. Especially if you're doing a goal like what we talked about, financial goal. They want to become good with money. You have to round yourselves with people and resources that point you to the right direction, that are gonna support the lifestyle that you want to have, the changes that you want to make, make in your life, even if it's not real people. I myself, I got books, I started listening to podcasts and I start Finding those people that are on the same journey, they're doing well with their money, because that's what I wanted to do. And if you can choose those people that are already ahead of you, because your tendency is going to be to grow, to catch up to them, or to be part of that group. So you want to be the worst of the best. Best. Just kidding. But that's kind of like that. You want to be in a place where you're going to grow. They're going to challenge you to grow. What are the next steps that you want to take? What's your next evolution? Think about the iPhone or you're a new version, you're going to become a new version. What's that version going to be? Great with money. Right. All right. So the last two balances are intellectual and spiritual. Intellectual is for you to continue learning. So in my case, I love personal finance books, business books. Books. And mental health books. Now reading another book on, I don't know, depression. It's nothing different for me. It's something that I already do. So if I want to continue growing, then maybe I should read a novel. I don't ever read novels. Another thing that's really important. So it's doing something different than what you usually do. It's not doing Sudoku. If you do Sudoku every day, that's not something that's challenging your brain. So it's not going to keep you growing. It has to be something that you don't usually do. One of the best things is to learn an instrument. Instrument.
