[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: How's it going? We're here with a special guest today on our money is not your problem podcast. I have with me my dear friend Adriana Jarva, and we're going to talk about her evolution with her financial journey. Okay. I think she's the perfect example of a chief financial mom as she went through several difficulties and challenges in her life, and she's done an amazing job in progressing and getting better and better. Hey, Adriana. How's it going?
Hi, everyone. I'm so glad to be here, so thank you for inviting me.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: All right, so we're gonna start with the first question. Tell us a little bit about your life growing up.
So I grew up in Brazil, so Paulo. My childhood was very poor with money, you know, money. And family, too. My family. My parents were sick and my. My parents passed away. Now? No, not now, but many years ago, you know?
No.
Yeah. Like, My son has 31. My mom passed 31 years old ago. Oh, okay.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: So she never met Rodrigo just by fault.
Oh, okay. Because my son born in June. My mom passed away in August 91, 1991, the year. So my dad is many years ago. Okay. Yeah. So my dad was alcohol and my mom had mental sick and first moment. And when I was child. But when I was teenager, we discovered the cancer. Yeah, my mom passed away with cancer. Cancer was very hard with my mom. When I look to for my past, I feel very connection and very peace most with my family. Originally family with my brothers, my sisters. Because of course, with the money too, I learned a lot. But when I looked with my. My brothers and sisters, my siblings, I. We didn't increase together. We never increased together. You know, everyone was in different place, different area. Everyone grew up in different place. And nowadays we each opportunity we would like to be together. It's like a real brother and sisters. And sometimes I'm looking around surround me and I see brothers, sisters grow up together. They don't have a nice connection. It's so sad. It's because we don't have the same personality. We don't like the same things, but we respect each other and we love spending time together. It's so precious for me. It's most important things in my past. So my family, my brother My siblings, we are 10 the total. So one brother passed way. His name is Fabio. My another three sister, they grow up in one. How can I say?
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: Orphanage.
Orphanage, yes. And my mom gave. Gave away. Gave two kids. I grew up with my. I lived one year with my cousin. She had money. She's my reference, the rich person when I was child. Cuz she bought for me dress, beautiful dress, shoes, you know, I. I am like. I was like a doll. Yeah. And my reference with. I grew up this. You know. My teenager was very challenged. We live. I lived with my siblings for four years when we were teenager because my three sisters left to the. The orphana.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: Orphanage.
Orphanage when they started like 16, 17, 18 years and I was 14 years. And when I was 19, I was pregnant. And I don't have to. I don't have reference with the money. I don't have education with the money. You know, Nobody ever taught you anything? No. For me, if you go to restaurant, I thought oh, Madeleine is rich. You know, because we don't have this like pizza was very different for us. When I was child. Teenager. No teenager because we have some friends at the school. I studied in public school. It was because that was the only way. Yeah. This way. Just this option. And I worked since I was child. So I need to clean the houses for change the money with my server, see for have food, you know. And this was my reference with the money. But When I was 19, I was pregnant my son born. When I was 20, I stopped study and I returned to study. I graduated at university when I was 34 years old. I graduated in Brazil. I am journalism and I had MBA when I was. Everything with me was late. And when I was 40 years old, I graduated MBA in marketing. And I worked 23 years in publishing journal, journalists, journaling, magazines, newspaper. And when I start gaining money because I don't have education, I made debts in the bank. It's like. How can I say Bologna. Snowball. Snowball. You know. Wow.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: It was an avalanche.
Oh my gosh. Never. And I had depressed because I worked this time in one newspaper. And my boss, I don't like him because he's a flare to me and I. I need the job, you know, to work. And this time I had depressed. I was 33 years old and the doctor gave me 15 days to for my medication. Medication. And when I come back to the job, my boss fired me.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: Oh wow.
Yeah. And I had that my university. I don't pay my university. Yeah. And. But I find another job and I this time I start My way to spirituality.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: And.
And I called to the doctor and I says, doctor, no more this medicine for me. Thank you. I start my therapist, I start my spirituality and I start a new job. And I gain money again. But was five years to finish this debt.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: Okay.
I regret I learned it a lot was very difficult. But this time I really learned no more spend more than I gain, you know.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: And looking back at your past, was there someone that taught you anything about money that you carry over with you, that carry with you? You said that you didn't have a whole lot of reference growing up about money, but was there someone that you met along the way that helped you start in that journey?
I feel like everyone across my way taught me because or inspired me to become better. And I step one more, one more step for increase or don't be this person, don't follow this person. Never repeat this mistake or mistake, you know. And of course, I have many people, angels in my life. Good advice. But the people that. No good advice too. And specifically to you. When I moved to here, you advised me many things because. Because Adriana, be careful. Don't make that here. When you told me this. In this time, I remember your past, my past, you know, that difficult situation, my memories.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: Yeah. Wow.
And I never had that again. You know, I think I really learned this situation nowadays. I learned many things. Like nowadays we can change our car, for example. Oh, of course, we like when we see Tesla. Oh, it's nice. It's beautiful car. You know, but how many years to pay this nowadays I'm math in my mind. No, it's too much. You know, our car is nice and.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: You cool from A to B. Right?
Exactly. Now it's time to plan our future. Yeah. Our future retirement.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: Right?
Our retirement. Yeah. Mark. My husband and I.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: Very good. Yeah, you. Once you have that idea. And that's something that we talked about before. Once you have the idea where you're going.
Right.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: You know, what. What decisions you have to make. Can you explain this?
Choices and consequences. Right. Like when. You know, when you. Your. Your achievement. Achievement, achievement, achievement. You know, because the temptations we have. United States live here. Oh my gosh. Most. Because I'm not more new here because I'm six years here. But everything's a temptation, you know, like clothes, makeup, restaurants. Here's cheap tech.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: The technology.
Right, Exactly. And oh my gosh, the rides. Oh. But now I. I guess it's mature too. When I was young.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: Yeah.
I live like don't have another day.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: Exactly. Yeah. Let's do It. Today.
Exactly. Now, I think now I'm 51 years old. I don't know how many years I have, but I would like live with, comfortable, live with the nice, you know, and now we. We are responsible, I think, you know, and the price is like this. Hey, Temptations. No. Tesla, baby, no. Not right now. Right now, make money first, you know, no debt more. We finish our. We don't have almost nothing that. Yeah.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: Just the house.
Right.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: House mortgage. Yeah, that's. That's very smart because it gives you options to do other things.
Exactly.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: Right. When you're tied up, when all your money is tied up in bills, if something happens, you don't have what to do go for.
Yeah.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: So how do you reconcile. How do you make peace with the things that you made in the past? How is that process for you with, like some of the bad choices that you made in the past? How do you reconcile that in your mind?
My peace with my past is accept. And I learned a lot. I'm so grateful with my past, you know, because of course, if you think, oh, if you came back in the past to change, of course I saved more money, for example, you know, because when I was 20 years old in Brazil, I had my drive license and the drive license expired. 20 years each. 20 years. Okay. Nowadays it's each five years. And I, I. When I will be 40 years old, I will be old, you know, and this 20 years. So Mumbai. Oh, my gosh. So. And is it a process? It's the cycle of the life. The. It's very interesting. So I'm grateful with my past. I regret many things. It's fine. And I'm not like, oh, no, no.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: So you don't live in the past, right? The past, the past.
No, I, I learned many things nowadays. Oh, I'm really so in peace, you know, and I'm grateful because I. I have the life I really dreamed in my past more than I dreamed in my past.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: Yeah. Sometimes we don't see the future, and the future can be so bright. Right. If we just spend more time thinking about the future. Right.
Yeah.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: So let's go back a little bit. And you know, this is a chief financial mom, and we're talking about mom. So let's talk about you and this evolution that you had, how that influenced how you taught your son.
Oh, it's so fun because I guess I learned more with my son than I teach him. I guess I taught my son with my mistakes because the most precious relationship with my son is the true. I think I taught My son be honest and true. Always when I had my mistakes. I hate son. I had mistakes. This, this.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: You told him, right? You discussed with him.
But I really, really like mother mom, you know, because my son born is different, right?
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: He already had that in Halloween since.
He was child son Christmas. Oh, your grandma asked me what do you want for Christmas or for your birthday? Money. His answer is money. Cash. Son, I can't ask money for the people you true. You taught me be honest. The true. If you give me money, I can buy the things I really like it or I can save it. It's him. Because his dad is not this. His dad is worse than me financial moment. I don't know. I'm not judgment him just. I'm talking about myself. But he's. He's. He's born in this.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: Yes. And.
But I think if he. I. I taught him this is because with my mistakes. And he said my son still lets you borrow money. I see my life so smart, brilliant for make money.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: It seems like he has a strategy to do things right.
Yeah, it's not strategic. I spend money. When I start to gain money, I spend more than I gain. He know his gain. And after gain he spent much. No, no, all he's just one part, you know.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: So was there ever a time where you gave him advice and he did not follow it? And how did you handle that? So you told him not to do something or to do something financially in one way. And he did not do it. And. And how did you handle that?
Oh, many things son. What the university choose musician. Are you sure? Because in Brazil musician or art or in my mind don't give money, you know. And he's. I remember. And before his start university musician. He's applied for four universities in Brazil. Very good university. But for marketing and business you own Nice.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: Cool.
And I remember like now I was working and he's called Mom. Can I have lunch with you? Oh, guys, today I can lunch with you. Because in Brazil is very traditional lunch stop lunch. And hey, the people tease me. Oh, you become a grandma. Oh my gosh. What my son look like with me? You know, his mom. I'm so sorry I disappoint you, but I'm not go to the business or marketing. I. I choose musician. You but I spend money for pay this applying musician. Are you crazy? Yeah, your competition. You will competition with a professional since they were child. You start musician five years ago. You and I know. Could you please just be patient with me one more year. One. One year more for what? I have to study piano and.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: And then I'll apply.
Yeah. And I will apply. And I have to study some another school where I research this. This. He's giving me all plans, you know. And so I I would like talk. I answer him. I would like talk to with the the teacher piano. After he's applied the piano he has test and his teacher. A teacher. I'd like you be honest with me because my son would like this musician. But we are not rich family. And we listen have many competition because the people grow up study piano since they they born, you know. And the teacher says your son had good years. But he has all stares. I will do my best. And my son had a very hard job this year. And he surprised me. So he was number seven. The best university in Brazil. One of the best as you know is USP Unicamp. He was a Unicamp. Wow. He after his was approved approved. We were in hospital. He had disease. Because the doctor says I don't know what happened. He had one yesterday we were waiting the university. Oh he had this university. It's because this mother. Come on. Wait. Just he needed sleeping for one month was very cool. And he always disagree with me for his choice career. I'm so happy because for when he start his first job. Just one job. Because nowadays he's very.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: He's the entrepreneur.
Exactly. He is the business making his money. He's up and down. He's have nice life. So if he I need money YouTube we can ask. He's never listen me this like. Oh, you are working the bar. He was bartender working all all night in the bar. And you buy instrument. Mom, I know what I do. Don't worry. Believe me, I'm so happy. He because he's invest making investment. You know, with this and he's jumping for another jump, jump, jump. Sell this and buy another buy. Sell this, buy another. So nowadays is he's making many money very well. Very well.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: He's doing very well and doing what he loves, right?
Yeah. And his enjoy is most important. Money is a consequence is an energy. You have to find the things you really like it and that's it. And believe yourself that's excellent.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: Because you see his progression, right. And what are some of the things that you're doing to continue your financial progress like in learning and understanding what do you do?
Oh, nowadays I have been studying like advice books, nice books, podcasts. Important is online with you. Because I have lucky have you like my friends and like the plan now for our retirement. So I will Retirement in four years in Brazil, because I paid all my life. I worked since I was 14 years old. And soon I will have my retirement. And with Mark, I would like finish retirement next 15 years.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: Yeah.
And we have plan for have nice life, you know, because our culture in Brazil is like taboo speak about when we die, pass away. And now I learned I love this culture here because it's so practical, direct, clear. Because we can live better. When we have a plan and strategy, we can live better.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: Right. And nobody's confused, right. What's going to happen when you pass or when he passes.
Right.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: Everything is in place. That's very important. And that's one of the characteristics I like to. To help with my. My clients, my people that listen to the podcast is getting those things out the way. Some people believe that if you plan your funeral or things like that, you're gonna die. Well, we're gonna die anyway. It doesn't make you die soon.
Exactly. But we can live in much better with more quality.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: Yes, that is true. And plus, you're learning all about business, right? An online business. And we'll talk about that more in a little bit. So let's go back to the worst time of your life when you're like financially you're with your son, raising him and going to work all day and then going to school at night. Let's say there's a mother out there that's listening to us right now. What kind of advice you give to her that's going through the same things that you've been going that you did?
It's a good question. Great question, by the way. So I will say like if I for myself now in the past and for the moms like this first, everything is happening in our life for you discover some things like. Or be strong. I didn't know I was strong. I didn't know I was courageous. Courageous. I didn't know many qualities just because after I crossed these moments and. Or be responsible with money too, because I had mistakes. We are human. Most thing, most important things is where I would like to go. Where is my way? Where is my future? What I want for my future when I have 40 years old, 50 years old, 70 years old. We need look for the future. What do you want and when I am now, right now, whatever. If you are the miserable situation. Because I started in miserable situation. Money, food, school, family. But I had.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: You had your idea, right? Where you're going.
Ideas. Not only ideas, big dreams like March, I have a dream. You know, my dream is if Everyone can do it. I can do it too. You can do it too. You know, and I believe this. Everybody's the same. We all have capacity. Exactly.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: Possibilities.
Exactly. And I would like to encourage myself and look at the mirror. Sometimes I was crying because the situation and this situation will be passed. The first thing, what I have to do and connect with your spirituality, with your God, with your whatever you believe, but your faith, because this is powerful.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: It's bigger than us, right?
Yeah. Like Albert Einstein says, someone don't believe in miracle and someone, everything is a miracle. You know, for me, the life is a miracle. So just know what your direction like gps, you know, and sometimes it doesn't.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: Matter where you came from and where you are now, where you're going.
Connect with nice friends, the people better than you, more smarter than you. Nowadays we have technology for helping us. It's like a grocery technology. But you have to choose. What do you want to listen to read, to learn to walking. Yeah.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: Because there's a lot of junk out there.
Right. I will, I will give this advice for myself. When I was young, you know, I. I had probably more better choices. But when we are young, we don't think, you know, it's different. It's the cycle of the life. It's okay too.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: Right. And it's good because maybe, maybe someone doesn't have someone at that person right now that could tell them that and at least give an idea like plant the seed. And you're doing that for them right now through this podcast. And I'm so grateful for that. As a chief financial mom, I'm telling always my clients that having a vision for their family or for their life helps them with the directions and how to make choices. Because if that choice doesn't take you closer to your goal, then it's easy to say no because it's not going.
To take you closer.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: Right. So to end here, our conversation, let's do a round of rapid fire questions. Okay. I'm gonna ask you some questions and you answer whatever comes to mind.
Okay.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: All right, here we go. What was the worst financial decision you ever made?
Okay. I spent money, too much money with clothes, the brand. When I worked in Vogue magazine. Oh, I had nice hairstyles. I spend money in fancy restaurants in Brazil because it's expensive there for the status. Right?
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: Yeah.
I paid the restaurant for some people, I paid gifts. Expensive no more. No, no.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: I think also you already told me before that you do you spend money that you did not have to help other people.
Right? Yeah. Is another Thing. Very good point. My debt. If like my family brother. The situation was my brother. I don't have money. But I was so I feel guilty and feel bad and I It's not their fault. It's my fault. My responsibility. Not fault. My responsibility. I asked my more money in the bank for make more debt, you know, and no solution the problem. And making more problem for myself.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: Right.
Never more. Two. Yeah.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: First we'll take care of our house and then we can give to others. Right?
Exactly. It's like the situation airplane. If the airplane fell, you have to put the mask first you after helping others. Exactly. It's the same. This metaphor is very good.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: All right, so that's our next section. Next question. What was the most useless thing that you ever bought? What is something that you bought that was completely useless? So you're like, I cannot believe I spent money with this.
I guess it closes with the brand. Like I told you.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: That was. Yeah, that was a bad, bad purchase. Right?
Yeah.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: All right, so our last one. What was something that you bought that turned out to be better than you expected?
Always books. Books. Because oh my gosh, the benefits is forever. And trips. I love trips because I learned a lot.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: Yeah.
And with my friends, with my family.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: Just spending money with them. Yeah. It was all. It's always better than you, than you hope.
Yeah, usually. All right.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: Okay. So, Adriana, thank you so much for this interview for spending time with me and just sharing a lot of your wisdom. I know it's going to help so many mothers out there. There are going through a difficult time or if they just want to hear and feel inspired. Thank you so much. And I value our friendship forever also. Now tell us a little bit about any projects that you're working on and where can people find you?
So I created one studio yoga online and I have been teaching for Brazilian people live around the world. But for next year, I would like open English. Yeah. And for your followers when I have English, please. I would like of here one month for a week. Yeah, one week. Sorry. Yeah, one week. One week, guys. Sorry.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: She has an offer for you guys.
One week doing yoga classes. Yeah. And will be awesome. And I would like to make videos in English too. Meditation too. Because now my English is increased a little bit.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: So good. No, it's so good.
And we compare. Is it nice to share with the people? Because when I moved to here guys is another podcast. But just before finish this because it's so fun. I I was here to learn English six years ago and I started the first level English. Do you remember? And Madeline introduced me my husband, and she translated the first conversation and the Google Translate was our best friend. And oh, my gosh, I now I feel so happy to talk and understand the conversation. Of course, I'm still learning, but it's my goal. I will increase my English and I would like teach here in Utah, you know, but I would like increase with this organ line to English.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: That's gonna be great. And tell us where they can find you on the Internet.
Oh, Instagram is Adriana Jarva. And LinkedIn or TikTok. Adriana Jarva, too. And I have a blog, AdrianAJarva.com and.
[CFM COACH ASSISTANT AI ]: And then soon you're gonna have a course on hotmart, right?
Yeah. I have been learning about now this platform. Yeah. But this year is still in Portuguese. Okay. But 2023 will be Portuguese in English. And future is Spanish another English too. Are you liking this? Let's go to the award.
