Warren Buffett's $128B Secret to Wealth Revealed | Fear of Public Speaking

Robert Summa (YouTube, 2024-07-06) argues that the single best investment for corporate employees is overcoming the fear of public speaking. He cites Warren Buffett's public remarks that public speaking was his best self-investment, describes his own panic-attack history and recovery, and presents a 16-year career-earnings model showing large income differentials (individual contributor → CEO) tied to promotion potential enabled by public-speaking ability. He frames public-speaking mastery as enabling higher pay, larger investments/retirement savings, and early retirement (he retired at 53).

Hey, friends, today I'm going to take a different approach when it comes to public speaking and go over what is the fastest way to wealth, what is the fastest way to early retirement, and what is the best investment you can make in yourself to achieve those things, to achieve wealth in early retirement. I mean, I'm 53 and I retired at 53. I'm doing this now. This is my passion career. I don't have to do it, but I love doing it. And this is what's going to take me because obviously at the age of 53, I don't want to just, you know, sitting on a beach and bored all day. I want to keep going. And I love helping people. Now I'm coaching, but I was able to quit the corporate world of 33 years. So this is really specifically for people who are not entrepreneurs. If you don't own your own business and you're in the corporate world, like 90% of the people are in the corporate world, what's the best investment you can make? And the best investment you can make, I can tell you right now, is in yourself. And I'm actually not going to use my own quotes. I'm actually going to use one of the wealthiest people in the world, Warren Buffett, multi, multi, multi billionaire, right? We all know this is one of the wealthiest men on earth. He's like in the Bezos and the Elon Musk and, you know, then you have him and basically his biggest investment itself. And I'm actually showing the screen right now, and as you can see, you can Google Warren Buffett on public speaking. And he will say everywhere is the best investment he made in himself. Now, somebody who's made hundreds of billions of dollars in investments is not saying these investments were the best investment he made himself to become a billionaire. It was his public speaking. And why? Because he had the phobia of public speaking. And he knew coming out of college that if he couldn't speak in public and share his vision, he wouldn't have any followers. If you don't have any followers, you're not going to be an entrepreneur. You can't start a business. So without public speaking, he knows he will never even be able to start the this great company that generated hundreds of billions of dollars, making him one of the wealthiest people in the world. So his best investment, himself, and you can see everywhere, you can just Google it. It's everywhere is public speaking. He's always talking to younger people about public speaking as the best investment. And today I'm going to go a Little bit into why that is true. I'm going to go for my own opinions on it. So I started off going up the senior ladder really quickly and then I had a panic attack when it came to public speaking. I was in a room of 70 people or 100 people and I had my first panic attack and I never want to experience that again. But the thing was I couldn't find anything out there that can help me get over. I tried every single course tip, breathing technique, all the definite, all these different public speaking coaches and courses and nothing was able to help me. And real quick, I was able to find help out of Japan. Believe it or not, I found a researcher and scientist out of Japan that actually helped me overcome my public speaking phobia over 12 years ago and that skyrocketed me in my career and that's what we're going to go into today. So actually we're going to go into the screen a little bit more and I'm going to share a little bit more. So bear with me. I want to come to this slide now. This slide, if we look at the baseline down here, this is what happens if you don't overcome your fear of public speaking. You basically get stuck at an individual contributor or, or a manager. And this. I'm going back to the corporate world right now. If you look at the top here, this is a 16 year total average earnings. And the reason why I picked 16 years is because when I get on my calls with my clients, I ask them what's the average length that they've had. They've been dealing and struggling with public speaking. It's been somewhere between 10 to 20 years. So basically a lifetime. Right. And I just said, well, let me just take 16 years total average earnings over that time. Spanish 16 years time span. Right. How much will you generate if you don't get over your public speaking and how much will you generate if you do get over it? And this is where the numbers are really cool. And there's a lot more behind these numbers I'm going to explain because these numbers are just a salary, but it doesn't even talk about the investments you're making and how you're paying for your house with 20% down or 30% down, how you're paying cash for cars, how you're going on nice vacations, how you can afford the things you want to do. Enjoy life. I retired again at age of 53 and I'm doing my passion career. This is the way I did it. I was in the corporate world before I became an entrepreneur. So investing myself was getting over my fear of public speaking. Because if you look what happens when you get over your fear of public speaking. Well, just take a look without it again, you're an individual contributor. At the most, you become like a first level manager. But once you get over that, you need public speaking and most people have a phobia or fear of it, they avoid it like the plague. Right. But if you stay in that space, you're never going to grow. So look, over 16 years as a manager, you make about $1.6 million, and that is looking at a $75,000 starting salary. And then of course, merit increases and merit increases and merit increases. At the end you're making 102. So you start off at 75 or 102 at the end of 16 years. That's because you didn't get any promotions, because you're stuck right now at Interval contributor. You're, you're starting off around 50 on average. So over those 16 years, with merit increases, those 3, 4, 5% merit increases, maybe like a little promotion here and there to keep you in the company, at the end, you're only making $70,000. You've only increased your salary $20,000 over 16 years. So at the end of that, you've made a million dollars over 16 years. That's not a lot of money in most major cities. Matter of fact, you're going to be living paycheck to paycheck, not going to be able to afford a house. You're probably still going to be renting. And if you get a house, it's going to not be the one that you kind of want. It's going to be one that you can only afford. And then you're probably going to put 10% down, which means you're paying a lot more money. You're going to be house broke. It's called house broke because you can't afford anything else. But look what happens really quickly when you get over your fear of public speaking, you get promoted to senior manager. Now, over 16 years, a senior manager makes $3.5 million. What a huge difference between 1 or 1.6 to 3.5. But the thing is, when you get over your fear of public speaking, you're not going to sit at senior manager. You're going to keep going up the ladder, you're going to keep getting promoted because you don't have the fear of public speaking. So just within a couple of years to become a director. Look at a Director makes over 16 years, 5.4 Lucida VP. If you go to VP, 7.2, Senior Vice President, 8.8 EVP could be over around $10 million. And CEO. I just put 16 million. I just put like the average salary of a CEO a million dollars a year over 16 years. But they really make a lot more money in most companies than that. But I was just being really, really conservative here and saying, look what you can do. But behind these numbers is what is not here. And what I want to talk about, when you're making this kind of money, you're paying cars with cash, you're able to make secondary investments, you're maxing out your 401ks, your IRAs for retirement, which is tax free. But then also on top of that, you're able to just open up a Fidelity account or T roll price account or any kind of account that you want to create and start putting money into it. Every month or every week, right? Every month you put money into it. Money into it. That's compounding, compounding, compounding, compounding. Next thing you know, within 16 years, on top of that kind of a salary, you can have millions of dollars in a Fidelity account or T roll price account, whatever account you want to choose. You make your own investments and you do some ETFs, you do some stocks and you do some, you know, you want to make sure that you, you know, you diversify. But this is what I did and I was pouring money. I was maxing out my 401k, I was buying cars with cash, I put huge down payments on my home, I'm having nice vacations. And then all that investment was able to afford me to retire because now I have millions of dollars saved in liquid, not just retirement accounts, but liquid accounts. So if anything were to happen to me, I got so much money in the bank account from going my fear of public speaking that I don't have to worry about life anymore. So now my passion job is public speaking. So what is the best investment you can make in yourself? If you live in the corporate world and you don't own your own business, it is public speaking, not just me. Warren Buffett says the same thing because he knew that he being over here, fear of public speaking, he would never be able to get up to these places here, right? This is the corporate world. And in order to get up that ladder, you can see you need public speaking skills just to get up to senior manager. Because now you as a senior manager, you're in charge of departments, right? And direct level departments. You have to speak to your organization, you have to speak to the clients, you have to go to the all hands. You got to get on the stages, right? So these are all the things that happen when you get over your fear and foe public speaking. You, you literally are investing in yourself. So I invite you to take my course. Get over your fear of public speaking. The best investment in yourself is get over your phobia of public speaking so that you can speak your voice, you can become authoritative figure, you become a high level figure in your corporation. It's the most sought after skill you can possibly have to get up those ranks because people follow leaders and in order to become a leader, you have to be able to get on the stage and speak your vision to the people. So I hope this helps a lot. Thank you so much for listening. I just want to pick this video because this is something that I really always want to share about. What's the best investment in yourself? If you're not an entrepreneur and you don't own your own business, and even if you are entrepreneur, you own your business, you better be able to public speak. So even then public speaking is so critically important. Thank you so much.
