What is the FEAR of Public Speaking (Glossophobia) | And Can We REALLY Overcome It?

Robert Summa explains that glossophobia (fear of public speaking) is a learned, brain-based false alarm—an oversensitive fight-or-flight "smoke detector" often rooted in childhood social experiences. He argues exposure therapy (practice in front of audiences) is inappropriate for this social phobia and promotes a signature "non-exposure" method performed privately at home to desensitize physiological triggers (pounding heart, shaky voice, sweating) and rewire the anxious response. The video concludes with a CTA offering a free PDF self-assessment (minor/moderate/severe scale) and a 20% discount for an online course.
Why do we have the fear of public speaking and can we really overcome it? Hey guys, today we're going to discuss why do we really have the fear of public speaking and more importantly, can we overcome it? Stick to the end because I think you'll be really happy with the answer.

Hey friends. So welcome back to Public Speaking cure, the one and only channel that is dedicated to helping you get over your fears and phobias of public speaking forever. So, just to recap the two part series on the brain, we learned three main things. So the first thing we learned is that the fear of public speaking, also known as glossophobia, is nothing but a false alarm of your brain's fear response, trying to keep you safe from an oh moment. The second thing we learn is that the fear of public speaking is really a learned environmental fear response. It's something that we picked up in our childhood, usually in school when we were teased by kids, when maybe we got an answer wrong, if the teacher called out on us and maybe we didn't do our homework and we didn't know the answer and the kids laughed at us. So it's a learned environmental. And that brings us to number three. We need to reverse and rewire the brain so that we no longer see public speaking as a trigger of the fear and flight response. So can we overcome the fear and phobias of public speaking? Absolutely. And using my signature method, we are going to use a non exposure therapy which is only taught in the top Ivy League and global universities around the world. So what does that mean? Well, in my signature method, I'm going to be helping you get over your fears and phobia by doing exercises out of the comfort of your home. So I teach a non exposure therapy and that's just where 99% of all the seminars in coaches and all the blogs that you read and videos you're watching have it wrong. They all teach an exposure therapy and that is not good for public speaking, which is a social phobia. You see, exposure works better for things like spiders, snakes, getting on an escalator, those type of phobias. But when it comes to the fear of public speaking, that's a social phobia and exposure is just not the way to get over that type of fear. So using my signature method, we're going to go after all the triggers that come along with the fear of public speaking. Like the pitter pattering of your heart, right? The nervous voice or maybe a little bit of sweating. And we're also going to go over the psychological, like the anxious, noisy brain, that inner loud voice that you have. What we want to do is reverse it so that we don't see public speaking, whether it's getting on stage, giving a presentation, singing, giving a toast at a wedding. We don't see these things as something to be feared or something that triggers the fight or flight response. So I'm going to share my screen for a second. So Randolph Ness was a researcher at the Arizona State University, and he came up with a smoke detector principle. And basically what the entire principle is, is that the fight or flight response, when it comes to things that are not really dangerous, is just a false alarm. So think of your brain as a smoke detector. Would you rather have a brain that's oversensitive, that kind of goes off when you have a little bit of smoke? Like when you burn toast or you're frying something in a pan, you have a little bit of smoke and the fire ticket goes off? Or would you rather have the under sensitive smoke alarm detector that sometimes misses real fires? Well, obviously we would rather have a smoke detector that's a little bit oversensitive rather than something that can actually miss a real fire. So what our brain is doing is we've taught it to fear certain things that are just really nothing more than a wisp of smoke, but that is to keep you safe. So when it comes to the fear of public speaking, it's really just a false alarm. And that's what we really need to reverse in our brain. We need to reverse the fear response that speaking in public is nothing to be feared. It's not a real fire. It's nothing but a wisp of smoke. So we need to reverse some of the triggers of that fire alarm. Right? Why is our smoke detector so sensitive? So going back, we learned that public speaking is something we fear from our childhood. So we need to reverse some of those things. So we're going to attack all the different symptoms. And by attacking the different symptoms, we can actually start reversing our brain to not fear public speaking. Let's just take the pounding heart. So for many, when somebody says you have to do a presentation, your heart starts pounding, right? And when you get that heart pounding, you start getting anxious and, and that starts triggering the noisy brain. So then your heart starts pounding even harder, your inner voice gets a little bit louder, and next thing you know, you might even start sweating or you might start thinking about, oh my God, what's going to happen to me if I get on stage and make a mistake? And in that Loop you go, and the anxiety gets bigger and your heart pounds faster and you start to sweat. And all these things compound into high anxiety. Some people even get panic attack. So whether it's moderate to severe or all the panic attack, 80% of people actually have this great fear of public speaking. And if we can attack every single trigger one at a time, what we can do is slowly start reversing the fear of public speaking. So over time, we are going to approach every single type of trigger that you have. When it comes to the fear and phobias of public speaking. We really need to approach every single symptom individually to eventually rewire that brain to teach it that public speaking is nothing to be feared. It's nothing but a wisp of smoke. It is not a fire. So let me ask you a question. Would you want to start your exercises in front of a crowd of a thousand people or giving a toast at a wedding or maybe presenting or getting on stage and singing? Of course not. And that's what I just don't understand about all these corporate seminars out there or all these speaking coaches. They always teach practice makes perfect, right? Nailing your first 30 seconds, knowing your content, that's the art of presenting. But that is not how you get over the fear and phobias of public speaking. You need to get to that mic first. So my signature method teaches you to do all these exercises out of the comfort of your home. And that's just where all those coaches and seminars out there get it wrong. In fact, their approach will make your phobia even worse. Because imagine going up to the mic without getting over your fear of phobia first and trying to use their practice makes perfect methodology of exposure and practice and practice and practice. Well, if you're practicing in front of a crowd of a thousand and it's your first time up, you're going to have the pounding heart, you're going to have the quivering voice, you're going to be drinking that water bottle with the shaking hand, and it's going to create a really, really horrible experience for you. And that is going to create just more anxiety and more phobia public speaking. So that is why my signature method is the best way of doing it. And that's why it is what's now taught in Ivy League schools and the best universities out there. But it's something that in general, nobody teaches but I do. So the answer is, yes, we can actually overcome our fears and phobia of public speaking. But better yet, I'm going to teach you how to do it out of the comforts of your home, all done in the privacy of your home. So that when you first approach that mic, you are literally cured of your fears and phobia. Before your first presentation, will you have a little bit of nerves? Yeah, but it's good nerves. It's excitement nerves. It's not the fear nerves, it's not the anxiety and the pounding heart. Right. It's more excitement. And those are normal nerves. When you're doing a presentation, everybody gets those. Everybody has a little bit of nerves. Right. But at least we're not having that fear. The sweating, the shaky hands in that loud, anxious voice. And then you get up in front of a crowd and you have a really bad performance. So if you like what you're hearing, I have great news. Not only do I teach one on one private sessions, but but I'm also releasing an online video course. Even better. There's a link below to a free PDF and that PDF is a self assessment test. It's going to tell you where you fall on the scale of public speaking when it comes to fear. Are you minor, moderate or oh, it's severe.
