Chemsex Recovery: Dark Night of the Soul

In this 30‑minute monologue, recovery coach Dallas Bragg reframes chemsex and methamphetamine use for gay men as a "dark night of the soul" – a necessary spiritual initiation rather than a punishment. He begins with a personal narrative of his own descent into meth use, describing how the experience forced him to confront a false self built on shame, performance, and self‑abandonment. Bragg then outlines the three phases of the dark‑night framework: (1) the breakdown, where life collapses and the false self disintegrates; (2) the shadow‑work stage, in which the individual must feel, name, and love the painful emotions and parts of themselves that have been hidden; and (3) the rebirth/integration stage, where the pain is transmuted into a new sense of purpose, authenticity, and wholeness. He emphasizes that triggers are gifts pointing to unresolved wounds, and he offers a concrete practice: when a trigger arises, pause, label the feeling, locate it in the body, breathe into it, and speak love to the part of self that is hurting. Bragg repeatedly stresses that the darkness is a teacher, not an enemy, and that ongoing alchemical work continues beyond the first recovery. He promotes his 12‑month group coaching program, Recovery Alchemy, and his Aftermeth Podcast as resources for listeners at any stage of recovery. The overall message is hopeful and compassionate: the painful chemsex journey can become the crucible that forges a higher, integrated self.

On this channel, you're going to find lots of resources to break free from the addictive patterns of chemsex and attain your best and highest life. Also, don't forget to look for my podcast. All right, so can you remember who you were before you tried meth or meth or monkey dust? I remember me, the man who thought coming outta the closet was the answer to all of his pain. The man who imprinted on every man who showed him attention. The man who wrapped anger and resentment around him like a heavy coat. That man who despised who he was inside. But pretended to be happy and free. At that point in my life, I was sober, yet completely lacking any self-awareness. I was broken and I didn't even know it. And I had a destiny inside me programmed into my heart, a life's purpose. But in order to attain my best and highest version, there was an initiation, a crucible. A dark night of the soul. Everything in my life lined up so that I would end up at that guy's house on a Sunday afternoon with a pipe in my face. And with that first puff, my dark night began, and into the depths I went. And now, 7 and a half years later, I'm walking in the light, the light of awareness, the light of peace, the light of purpose. So grateful for my experience with methamphetamine. I'm so grateful to be the wounded healer For men around the world. So I wanna talk to you today about something that might reframe your entire relationship with what you've been through and what you're going through right now. What if I told you that your experience with chemsex wasn't a detour from your spiritual path, but actually the initiation itself? What if the chaos, the breakdown, the loss, the shame, What if it all was never punishment, but preparation? Not a fall from grace, but a descent into the underworld every hero must make before they can be reborn? This is what is sometimes called the dark night of the soul. And whether you're still using, newly substance-free, or years into your recovery, understanding this framework can radically shift how you see your journey and how you see yourself. By the way, I help gay men break free from the addictive patterns of chemsex and become their best and highest selves. I have a group coaching program called Recovery Alchemy. It's a 12-month, and 12 months if you go on to the next one, intense program that can literally change your life. I accept clients all the time. We start a new group every 6 weeks. If you're interested, apply in the show notes. All right, so what the dark night really is. It's something I've learned that seems counterintuitive, and it's that spiritual awakening doesn't happen in the light. It happens in the darkness. The breakdown, which is your active use and the resulting spiral, isn't the opposite of a breakthrough. The breakdown is the beginning of the journey. It's the beginning of the dark night. Every spiritual tradition talks about this. 40 days in the wilderness, the encounter with the shadow, the descent into the underworld, the alchemical process, of breaking down before you can transform. In our world, ChemSec's world, it looks like losing custody, losing employment, losing housing, losing relationships, losing yourself, losing your mind. You will be set free from a ton of anxiety, shame, suffering, and rumination when you accept that it had to happen this way. Not because you're being punished, not because you're broken or bad or fundamentally flawed, But because the version of you that you thought you were, the one built on shame, hiding, performing, people pleasing, self-abandonment, that version had to die before the real you could emerge. Your chemsex journey isn't what went wrong with your life. It's the crucible where your true self gets forged. And gets to come through. So the first step in this is the breaking down, right? It's when everything starts to fall apart. Think about where you were when the using started to spiral, or maybe where you are right now if you're still in it. Your mind becomes an echo chamber of negative thoughts. You're triggered constantly. Your relationships are crumbling. Your career feels meaningless. Nothing works anymore. Not the coping mechanisms, not the personas, not the strategies that got you this far. You look around and you think, I thought I was evolving. Why does it feel like I'm going backwards? Because an old part of you is dying. That's what's happening. The false self, the one that learned to hide, to perform, to use sex and substances to feel okay in your own skin. That self is being dismantled piece by piece. Peace. It's not regression. You're not moving backwards when you go through an active meth use or an active chemsex use. It's called decomposition. It's the necessary breaking down before the transformation can begin. This phase cannot be rushed. You cannot get to decide when it ends. All you can do is recognize where you are and stop fighting it so damn hard. Stop placing a negative meaning on it. The light will then return. First, you have to do some internal housekeeping. You have to face what you've been running from all your life. You start meeting the shadow. This is the stage where you're no longer just aware of the pain. You're in the pain. You're truly feeling it fully. You're meeting all the parts of yourselves you've been avoiding for years. Maybe decades. They're not pretty. They're angry. They're terrified. They're ashamed. They've been locked in that basement of your consciousness for so long that when you finally open the door, they come out screaming. This is where the real work happens. This is where feeling becomes healing. Feeling is healing. Every negative emotion you experience is coming up To be healed and released. But you have to let it move through you. You can't think your way outta this. You can't positive vibe your way out of it. You can't fuck it away or get high enough to make it disappear. You have to feel it. Feeling is healing. Let me say this very clearly. What you feel without resisting it is what you heal. All the pain you've been storing in your body. Rejection, abandonment, shame, grief, rage. It's been sitting there fermenting, waiting not to destroy you. It wants to be released. Your triggers aren't the problem. They're the breadcrumbs leading you back to the lost fragments of your soul. Every time you get activated, every time you get pissed, every time something makes you wanna use, every time the shame spiral starts, that's your psyche saying, hey, there's something here. It needs your attention. Triggers are gifts, always, 100%. So when that wave comes, you have 2 choices. Resist it, numb it, avoid it, bypass it. Spiritual platitudes, substance use, sex, work, job, whatever your poison is. This makes it worse. This is how you stay stuck in the loop. Or you can feel it. Sit with it. Let yourself be broken by it. Cry if you need to cry. Scream into a pillow. Move the energy. Dance. Exercise. Run. Let it shake through your body. All pain must be felt out of the body. There's no other way to remove it. Period. End of story. Period. End of story. So this is the initiation. This is you meeting the parts of yourself That you've hated and rejected and tried to destroy with crystal and anonymous sex and all-night sessions and compulsive validation seeking. These parts of you need to hear something from you. They need to hear, I'm sorry I abandoned you. I'm sorry I made you wrong. You are welcome here with me now, and I love you exactly as you are. Those are the parts that— Rejection comes up, loneliness comes up, inadequacy, pain, fear, anger. Hurt. They're not wrong. And you're not wrong for having them. You need to love them as they are and feel them. And when you say that to them, and when you really mean it, something shifts. Energy starts to move. The prison doors start to open. And that leads you into your rebirth. That's the place— that's the phase we're all waiting for, right? This bit can come way after you quit meth. This is where the magic reveals itself, really. It's after you've descended into your own underworld, you've met your shadow with love instead of hate, after you felt the feelings you thought would kill you and then discovered they didn't, you begin to emerge transformed. This is the resurrection, the rebirth, the integration. You might experience a sudden profound sense of peace in your body, a feeling like war inside has finally ended, genuine wholeness for the first time you can remember, gratitude for what you went through. A new sense of purpose rising up within you. Freedom, authenticity, safety in your own skin. This was what was always on the other side of chemsex. Not just sobriety, not just clean time, not just white-knuckling through the rest of your life hoping you don't relapse. Actual transformation, actual embodiment of your highest self, actual self-love. You've passed the initiation, you've proven you're worthy of this new level of consciousness, and now you get to live from it. This work is never done, by the way. And that's the really good news, because here's what I need you to understand. There will always be more layers, more initiations, more shadow work. This journey of growth and evolution never ends. But here's the beautiful part of it. As you rise to higher levels of consciousness, when you get through a chemsex experience, any other shadow is lighter in comparison. The pain becomes more subtle. The work becomes less about sitting with the crushing heavy emotions and about refining your awareness, refining your discernment, refining your capacity to love. The journey gets easier, but not because you've arrived or you're some enlightened being, because you've learned how to move through it because of your experience with chemsex. You've learned that the darkness is not your enemy. It's your teacher. It's showing you the parts of yourself that need love. And when you give them that love, when you integrate them instead of rejecting them, you become more whole. This is the promise. This is the promise of Recovery Alchemy, the program I'm in. This is your invitation. Your pain is the portal to something better and great. Darker the pain, the brighter the light on the other side. I know some of you are listening to this and still, and you're still using, and that's okay. Some of you are newly substance-free and terrified. Some of you have years under your belt, but you're going through another layer of this work and wondering, when will this end? Wherever you are, I want you to hear this. Your chemsex experience, the whole messy, painful, beautiful thing, is not what went wrong in your life. It's your initiation into your highest existence. Breakdown had to happen so the breakthrough could begin. The old you had to die so the real you could be born. And the pain you're feeling right now, it's not here to destroy you. It's here to liberate you, but only if you're willing to feel it. Healing is feeling. Only if you're willing to meet it With love instead of hate, resistance, judgment. Only if you're willing to stop seeing it as the enemy and start seeing it as the messenger. Your dark night of the soul is not punishment. Again, it's preparation. And on the other side of this initiation is a life you can't even imagine yet. A version of yourself that's whole, integrated, free, powerful, loving, and loved. That person is waiting for you, but you have to walk through the darkness to meet them. So this week, I want you—I want to invite you to try something. When a trigger arises, I'm not talking about trigger to use specifically. Anything—an annoying boss, traffic jam, condescending mother. When you are when you're emotionally activated, when you feel the urge to use or escape or run or numb, pause. Instead of resisting it, instead of hating yourself for it, instead of getting mad at yourself for it, name it. I'm feeling shame, feeling fear, feeling anger. This is grief. What am I feeling? This is shame. This is fear. This is grief. Feel it. Drop into your body. Think about where do I feel this physically? And then breathe into it. Let it be there without trying to change it, without moving, without grabbing your phone. Just let it be there. Love it. Speak to that part of yourself. I see you. I've abandoned you. I'm not, I haven't let you express yourself, but here I'm, I'm, I'm ready. I'm willing. Welcome. You are welcome here and I love you. And then thank it. Thank you for showing me where I need healing. Thank you for caring about me enough to want to come through and to teach me how to ultimately love myself. This is what shadow work is. This is integration. This is how you alchemize your pain into power. This is the work. I can help you quit meth. Easy part. This is the real work. All right, you guys have a great week. I'll see you next time.
