Discovering Your True Nature

Dallas Bragg spent 30 years on autopilot in an affluent but empty life, then struggled with crystal-meth addiction before getting sober. He argues that questioning your motives, building trust in your inner voice, and making small habit changes can break free from the false identity society and family create.

Hey, how are you doing? You know, I talk a lot about journey back to self, and a lot of people ask me, what does that mean? Who is self? And so this— today's video is about some ways that I have used to discover my true nature and who I am. You've wasted too much time dislocated from your own life. Do you know what it's like to feel invisible? If someone asked you today, who are you? Would you be able to answer? If not, keep listening. This— these were originally a Twitter thread, so that's why I have reading on there. But what does it feel like to be invisible in your own life? I know that I spent about 30 years feeling like a character just plopped down into a I just felt like my life was passing by me, and I remember specifically I came home from work, pulled in the driveway. It was after dark, obviously, and through the window I could see my— the silhouette of my kids running toward the door. They were going to greet Daddy, right? I knew that as soon as I opened the door, I would get hugs and kisses, and then my wife would probably going to have dinner ready for me. I pulled into this big house on a corner lot in an affluent area. I had a great job, a good car, but I wasn't happy. I felt like someone else was living this life and I had no purpose whatsoever. Do you know what that feels like? That is not how we are meant to exist. We are not meant to feel invisible in this life. It's too short and it's too valuable to not know who you are and what you want. Going through the motions every single day in default mode can feel numbing. Making decisions based on societal norms and entrapment of your cyclical thinking patterns makes you a living robot. What meaning does your life have? Going through the motions. Get up, go to work, go to the store, come home, put the kids to bed, watch Netflix, go to sleep, and then do it all over again, right? If you're doing these things, not to say that that kind of existence is bad, but there's no meaning behind it and you feel like it's driving you, you're not driving it, then you are lost. We feel lost when we make our decisions based on what we should be doing and what we're supposed to be doing. Societal norms that come from establishments, that come from family, that come from friends, outside of anything outside of us. When we base our decisions on that, we're lost because we're not being authentic and aligned with our true self. Not to mention when we're driven by the cyclical patterns and the beliefs that are in our mind that came from human conditioning, things that happened all along, how we were brought up and things that might have been said or done to us. That programming could be running in the back of your mind and driving the decisions that you make as well. Either way, you're not in control. Nietzsche said, no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself. So ask yourself, do you own your life? Do you own who you are? And again, do you know who you are? Hey, if you like where this video is going, I want to let you know that I have a free 8-step quick guide to overriding limiting beliefs. It starts with the trigger and walks you through some quick and easy steps to unwind, unravel, figure out where this trigger is coming from, because it probably is some flavor of I am not enough. Figure out what it is and let's override it. Let's replace it with something else that says, I am enough. If you'd like a copy, please send me your email address, or you can go to my Linktree and there's free resources. Click on there and you can put in your email address and download it yourself. I allowed the church to write my story. I ended up creating the facade of an all-American dream While inside, I was slowly rotting. I had no sense of identity. I ended up addicted to crystal meth to numb the pain. Rotting inside is a very true depiction of how I felt— empty, void, and just every day dying a little more. I personally became suicidal, which is a whole other video and story. But having no sense of purpose can leave you feeling like a walking corpse. And that's how I felt. I had to do what I felt was— I was supposed to do. Based on what the church, which is really man-made rules, told me to do. And I was living based on the biased opinions of other humans. By becoming a student of myself, I was able to unravel the programming that was dictating my life's journey. Today I know who I am, what I want, And where I'm going. I'm so grateful that I went through a drug addiction because through that process of getting sober, I then died to everything that I was, including this facade that I had created. I completely died and rose again. And through Christ consciousness, I found out my true nature, and today I do know who I am. I do know what I want and where I'm going. So begin to question everything. Take a step back to observe your life. Ask the why behind everything you think, say, and do. If your why is related to external expectations, this is your starting point to make changes. So imagine, if you would, you're a scientist. You're in a lab coat, you have a clipboard, a pencil. You're looking down not on lab rats, but on you. You're operating in your life at work, at school, with family, with friends, whatever you're doing. Begin to question everything you do. When you go up to go to the gym, are you going to be more healthy? Going to try And be like the person you see on social media? Are you trying to keep up with societal norms? I struggle with this myself. When we begin to really be honest with ourselves and unravel the reasons we're doing things in our life— thoughts, actions, words— we begin to truly see who's making the decisions. And I'll make a side note here. In order for this to be successful, there has to be a certain level of trust in yourself. Because if you don't know yourself well enough to be able to discern what's true and what's authentic, then you're not going to be able to really unravel these decisions because you're not going to understand when you're being honest with yourself and, and what's based on your beliefs. So a first step— could be another video— is learning to trust yourself, getting in tune with your spirit, soul, and body. But we'll go, we'll, we'll go on. Get uncomfortable. Embracing self-discovery is going to mean going against every natural tendency that feels good to you. It can be painful to face the shadows of your existence. And to reflect on traumatic memories that you may have repressed. But do it scared. Getting uncomfortable— I heard it all my life. Get out of your comfort zone. Get out of your comfort zone. I didn't know the true power of being uncomfortable until I started down this journey. Is when something is scary to you, that is a pretty good indication that you need to go into it. Have the courage and do it scared. But this process is going to feel like you are going against everything that feels natural. And sometimes things feel good, but that doesn't mean they're aligned. So here's an example. You weren't hugged as a child, or maybe you were hugged. Okay, whatever happened to you. Made you adopt a belief that hugging is support. Hugging is the way to console someone. And you see someone hurting or crying, and you walk over them and you hug them. Okay? You leave the situation feeling really good about yourself. You feel like you're in alignment. It felt good inside. There's no anxiety. There's no Negative emotions. You feeling pretty good about it, but that person, let's say they leave the situation feeling offended. Their healing process was interrupted. They didn't want to be touched. They didn't ask to be touched, right? You actually made that situation about you. You are following beliefs. That you've created that are actually distortions. You may feel good about it, but when you become a student of yourself, you begin to question, why did I hug this person? Why did I feel it was okay to put my arms around them without asking? And the intention might be really good, but the point is, is that you are living life. Based on your own beliefs and not reality. The reality of the situation was if you had asked permission, they would have said no. Hopefully, then you might have felt bad about the situation, but you know the truth. I hope that makes sense. Honor the entirety of your experience. You will find yourself experiencing some intense emotions. It is important to pause and observe intense emotions with loving curiosity because therein you will find the clearest direction toward discovering your true nature. This is when I plug my 8-step quick guide for overriding limiting beliefs. Probably plugged it already in this video, but this is where I'm talking about intense emotions, emotional activations, or as we know them as triggers, are also a really good opportunity for you to discover where your limiting beliefs are. And, or just, just call them the beliefs that are driving your life and making your decisions for you. When you're triggered, when you feel anger, frustration, pride, lust, um, anxiety, when you feel these things, this is a sign for you to Observe, step back, unravel, detect— when did I feel this before? Separate yourself from it. All the steps that are in the— my free quick guide download. Um, when you begin to do that, that's going to guide you and direct you along the path to discovering your true self. Interrupt patterns with micro changes. Identify patterns in your life and ask, do I want to continue repeating these patterns? If the answer is no, make one small change that is the total opposite of what you'd normally do. This will begin the process of breaking free. What are the patterns in your life that you want to break? Um, for me, give an example, uh, one pattern that I had was if someone didn't respond quickly enough to me through a message, Um, or they read my message and didn't respond. Activated. I would be totally activated. And the first thing I would do is start texting them again, right? The first thing I'd do was begin to get angry and look to see who else are they responding to that's not me. So one micro change in that is picking up the phone or putting your fingers on the keyboard and then pausing. And stepping away. It sounds so simple, and it doesn't sound like it fixes the problem, and it doesn't quite fix it, but it's one micro change that sends a ripple effect into your, your brain, your spirit. You know, there's a scientific reason behind all of it. I'm sure somebody like Huberman could explain it, but it begins to send a message that you're ready to change. That you're ready to break the pattern, that you're not going to settle for doing the same thing over and over and over. Define your why. What is your heart's desire? What is your purpose? If you could do anything and get paid for it, what would it be? Some strong journaling and reflection here will help you define your individual values. This will be your foundation to answering who are you. Somebody asked, who are you? What if you gave your three top values? This is who I am. I'm this, this, and this. For me, I had to discover my purpose wasn't a dramatic, huge, world-changing purpose, right? I know that my purpose in life is to inspire others to live better. That's it. Every day. Before I go to sleep, I reflect. Did I live my purpose today? Have I at least tried to inspire others to live better? That's what I'm here for. What the universe does with that, I'm ready to receive. It might be a book, it might be a TV show, who knows? I could go on the road and be the next Oprah. I don't know. But all I do know is— That is who I am. I'm here to inspire others to live better. That's it. You want more out of life. You feel empty inside. That is not how you are meant to exist. We are meant to live with freedom and purpose. These are the steps I took to pull myself out of being a character in my story to becoming the author. Don't you want to be the author of your story? You don't want to be the character anymore. You don't want to have anything or anyone else writing your narrative for you. This is your life to create. Choose your own adventure. It's work. It's like turning the Titanic. You're turning and Pausing and slowing down momentum that has taken you this far for this many years. And it can't just stop on a dime. You have to work for it, but it's worth every second. And I want to say that total healing and, and finding yourself is not a destination. It's gradient shades. Today I'm more clearer. Today I'm closer. Today I made a micro change. That's all it is. That's the fun of it. That's the journey. If we didn't have things to work on, what would life be? Thank you very much for joining me today. I hope that you will subscribe.
