Dallas Bragg talks to parents of people using chems. The advice: stop focusing on blame or your own adequacy. Create a space where your child feels safe, non-judged, and free to choose recovery when they're ready.
What is a, what is your advice, your best advice for parents of addicts?
When your child is suffering, it doesn't matter why they're suffering. It doesn't matter if you caused it or someone else caused it or addiction caused it. You want to create a space that is open to help alleviate the suffering. But right now, if your person, your child is suffering, you don't want to make it about you. And what if you're good enough or not good enough? You want to create a space for your child to get well, and whether your child chooses to get well or not is their choice, especially if they're an adult child, right? But you want to create a space in which they might come to you for help when they need it.
