Dallas Bragg argues that many people stay unhappy in recovery because they build sobriety on obligation rather than inspiration. Following external prescriptions from books, mentors, or programs creates duty without authentic self-connection. Real happiness comes when recovery aligns with your intuition and true self.

Here's the number one reason why you're in recovery but you're still unhappy. The more I'm talking to people, the more I'm seeing that they're designing their recovery out of obligation instead of inspiration. A lot of people think just because you quit the substance or the behavior, that's an automatic ticket to happiness, and it is not. Obligation is doing something because some book tells you to or some person tells you to. It worked for them, so it must work for you. This is not true. I talk about this at length in my Reframing Relapse course. It's free, and you can find it in my profile. True recovery is about connecting to yourself and your own intuition. Acting out of obligation says, I'm doing this because I think I have to, which bypasses the self-connection process. Acting out of inspiration is being in spirit. It's in alignment with your true self. You've spent your life being out of control due to your addiction. So why do you want to give up your control again to a book or another person? Be inspired.
