When you are emotionally activated, when you feel the urge to use or escape or run or numb, pause. Instead of resisting it, instead of hating yourself for it, instead of getting mad at yourself for it, name it. I'm feeling shame, feeling fear, feeling anger. This is grief. What am I feeling? This is shame. This is fear. This is grief. Feel it. Drop into your body. Think about where do I feel this physically? And then breathe into it. Let it be there without trying to change it, without moving, without grabbing your phone. Just let it be there. Love it. Speak to that part of yourself. I see you. I've abandoned you. I'm not, I haven't let you express yourself, but here I'm ready. I'm willing. Welcome. You are welcome here and I love you. And then thank it. Thank you for showing me where I need healing. Thank you for caring about me enough to want to come through and to teach me how to ultimately love myself. This is what shadow work is.
