Dave and Ashley Willis identify the "scorekeeper" in-law: someone who mentally tallies wrongs and enforces rules only they know. They argue your marriage is your first loyalty and that loving boundaries with parents who won't accept that are necessary.
The 10 types of unhealthy in laws. Let's start with the scorekeepers. We're always keeping this mental tally, the scorecard in our head where they're doing something wrong. We make a note of it and it's this game that we're always winning. Usually they're always losing.
They are involving you in a game that they made up that only they know the rules to and that only they can win.
But it doesn't have to be that way. You and your spouse are creating a new family, right? And that new family, even when it's just the two of you, even before you have kids, that new family of just you and your spouse is a covenant that is meant by God to be your first loyalty above anybody else. And so you shouldn't have to apologize by putting each other first. That's God's design. And if your parents don't understand that, then you might have to just lovingly put some boundaries in place.
