A short discussion by Dave and Ashley Willis on the biblical basis for marriage (citing Matthew 19:5-6) and practical guidance that spouses, while representing their families of origin, form an autonomous new family. Emphasizes covenantal, one-man-one-woman marriage and maintaining respectful relationships with parents.
Chapters
Matthew 19, 5, 6. And Jesus said, this explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife. And the two are united into one, since they are no longer 2 but 1. Let no one split apart. What God has joined together. A verse that there's a good chance you've heard read at a wedding, maybe even your own wedding. But this is Jesus himself validating and defining marriage. One man, one woman in covenant with God. And don't do anything to split that apart, your own marriage or anybody else's marriage.
You know we are representing our families of origin, right? We're representing each of our families of origin. But we are now making a new family, okay? And we are leaving those families. Not that we are rude to them or disrespect them or like, bye, see you, never talk to you again kind of thing. Like, it's not like that. But we are becoming our own autonomous family.
