They Lied To Us: What Intel REALLY Shows About the Iran War

David Oualaalou examines the gap between Trump's public claims about the 2026 Iran war and classified intelligence showing half of Iran's missile launchers and thousands of drones still operational. The conflict costs the US $2 billion per day, the Strait of Hormuz remains under Iranian control, and internal White House dissent has led to the firing of senior generals who questioned the official narrative.

Hello everybody and welcome to Geopolitical Trends, where truth matters. While Mr. Trump was watching 2-minute highlight reel of explosions, Iran still have half of its missile pointed at other locations within West Asia or Middle East, and nobody, nobody in the White House wanted to tell him They're just like so freaking scared of telling him the truth. And yes, the IC, the intelligence community in the United States, revealed the mission that Donald Trump is embarked on is far from over, with half of Iran's missile launchers still intact, the Strait of Hormuz still shut down or controlled. By Iran. Oil prices still surging on, on the markets. Ask India, ask Bangladesh, ask Philippines, or even ask Americans right here. And Iran, asymmetric warfare, draining billions of dollars on a daily basis from US coffers. $2 billion a day. So the question on everyone's mind, doesn't matter who you are, analyst or not, Who's really winning this war? And this is why in this live stream I'm gonna be sort of addressing the shocking gap between what Mr. Trump is telling us, the Americans and the rest of the world for that matter, and what the intelligence agencies across the US actually showing— the data, the facts. And what it all means for the future of power in West Asia or the Middle East. So make sure you stay with me, you are in for a really good treat because I have a lot of clips I'm going to be, uh, providing you. But I'm also going to do two main clips that I do translation for, uh, because those are very relevant to what we are talking about. And I, I'll just conclude this with my own observations. But here's the thing, for now, what's going on with Donald Trump, meaning the gap that exists, especially after the US Intel released its assessment, there's significant gaps between what the administration publicly claim and what the intelligence assessments reveal. And that's how it ought to be because the IC does not work for the president. The IC works on behalf— intelligence community— on behalf of the American people. Here is what Mr. Trump is claiming, and, and it becomes almost the question of, is he inherently a liar? Uh, there, there are people like that. I came across some in my life, inherently. Do you blame them sometimes? I don't know, biological, maybe, maybe not, whatever. Trump has repeatedly said the US totally— and I put this in quote— totally obliterated Iran's nuclear facilities, and that Iran was right at the doorstep of launching a nuclear bomb, which you and I know it's a fat lie. And here is the thing: in April, the first prime time address for Donald Trump. He said, and I quote, the operation was nearing its completion, end of quote. And the US had, in quote, all the cards, end of quote. Has nothing to do with the facts on the ground. What intelligence agencies or the report shows is that on the missile front, roughly, here's the assessment, and I read it in its entirety, and I will provide you a link later on. Here is the thing. On the missile side, roughly half of Iran's missile launchers are still intact, and thousands of one-way attack drones remain in Iran's arsenal despite the daily pounding by the US and Israel, or the strikes that they've been conducting over the past 5 weeks. We're entering now into the second war. Uh, second month of the war. And this one, according to the recent, which was released yesterday, US, uh, intelligence assessments. Here is what they said. One source, uh, uh, part of this, uh, team that released— usually in the intelligence matter you will never get the names, uh, it just, that's how protocol is. It is what, what the individual said, and I quote, they are still very much poised to wreak havoc, absolute havoc, throughout the entire region. End of quote. Meaning about Iran's capabilities. This is one source said to CNN, right, in US. Because CNN, by the way, FYI, there are some back doors that— that's why CNN gets some leaks from inside the agencies. Inside the US. It's a deal that they've been cutting, uh, for a long time. On the nuclear facilities, the preliminary classified Pentagon report said that the bombing sealed off entrances of two facilities and set back— which is a lie— Iran's nuclear program by a few months, not destroyed them outright as Mr. Trump stated. And on the nuclear threat justification, because the assessment was divided into a few sections. Trump's own top intelligence officials have said there is no evidence that Iran was anywhere close to building missiles with the range to strike the United States. And this is how— on how, how Trump gets briefed which is very unusual and different from the norm, at least during my days in Washington. Usually the report for the president, it comes through what we call the PDB, the Presidential Daily Briefing. That one usually is always briefed by either the CIA director or some top analysts in the agency or some high-ranking individual. And this PDB, or the Presidential Daily Briefing, is a daily summary of high-level, all-source information and analysis on the national security issues. And that one produced for the president and key cabinet— it's not this distributed among all, uh, US government key individual members of and advisors. And the PDB, the Presidential Daily Briefing, is coordinated and delivered by sometimes the ODNI, the, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, with contributions from the CIA as well as the IC elements, meaning the intelligence community, other agencies. They are about 16 of them, or 15, whatever that is the number. Some of them are classified and has been presented in some form or another to the president since 1946. This is how it used to be. Here is how Trump gets his briefing. You know how he gets the briefing? He received his daily briefing on an Iran war in the form of highlights reel. That's it, highlight, a roughly 2-minute video of the most successful strikes over the previous 48 hours. Described by one official who was familiar with this process as clips, stuff blowing up, end quote. And that shows you right there where the problem is. On the political front, we are looking at a different picture, which Trump is now coming to realize that he's been lying to the American people, and American people are catching up now with the reality. A recent poll, a Pew Research Center was conducted. It was a, it was a, uh, uh, a research was conducted from March 25th. March 25th, about 61% of Americans disapproved of Trump handling of the conflict, while only 37% approve. Makes you just wonder about the 37, but again, it's their right. They can support Mr. Trump if they want, as long as they're going to be paying more prices and they're going to feel the pain. Not Mr. Trump, it's them. Here's the thing: Trump's own chief of staff was reportedly concerned that aides in the White House were giving the president a rosy-colored view of how the war was being perceived domestically. And urged colleagues to be more forthright with the boss, end of quote. In other words, nobody's telling Mr. Trump the truth. And where is this pathetic, uh, government employees that they couldn't stand for what's right? And the path forward to all this, according to the, uh, uh, intelligence assessments— and I'm going to do the clips for you and so forth just as soon as I finish this here— here is the harsh reality. Is that the US also still struggling to open the Strait of Hormuz after so many countries turned the US down. Heck, the US is going now, reaching out to China, asking for China to send military to help open. And China's like, what, are you out of your mind? Read the Sun Tzu book. When the enemy is making a mistake, just let them. And this is privately— here is the thing— privately acknowledged it cannot promise to reopen the crucial waterway before ending the war because it can't. And we're not even talking the other front of Bab el-Mandeb that will be controlled under the Houthis or Ansarullah. So the end game, according to this assessment, the intelligence assessment, the end game remain murky, as I've predicted, because the end of the dominance of the US and Israel in the region will be at the hand of Iran. And with Trump simultaneously pledging to ramp up the fighting and wind it down, it's nothing but just bravado, no more, no less. So the intelligence picture is considerably more complicated and less victorious because they don't— in the intelligence assessments, you have to be objective. This is where that reliability and the probability plays a role into the any assessment. And that is where the difference between what the assessment is saying versus what Donald Trump's public messaging suggests. Two different stories. So let me play the first clip for you here. And what we're going to do, I'll just let it play out, uh, and I'm going to silence it but do the translation for you. And I'll give credit to Al Arabi, uh, uh, informational Al Arabi TV. That's their, uh, their, their, their video right there. I've ever seen before, victories like few people have ever seen before. And, and that is when you realize the lies. So here is what Mr. Trump is saying. With the tone of a victor and a narrative— I'm sorry, what the, uh, broadcaster is, is saying— with the tone of victor and the narrative overwhelming military decisiveness, Trump speaks at every opportunity about his military achievements regarding Iran and the results of the strikes targeting its military capabilities. However, Trump's figures and battlefield data have opened the door to questioning the reality of the image he promotes, shifting the debate from the battlefield to intelligence circles in an attempt to assess what has actually been achieved on the ground. The claims suggest that the Iranian Navy Okay, this is what it says: The Iranian Navy has ceased to exist, and the Air Force lies in ruins, and most of its commanders have been killed. Yet while the US president speaks of a major military triumph in Iran, intelligence reports reveal a far more complex picture. An intelligence assessment published by CNN indicates that Iran still remains or retain approximately half of its missile capabilities and thousands of drones. According to source familiar with the matter who spoke, uh, to CNN, US and Israeli airstrikes conducted over 5 weeks of conflict have not effectively succeeded in eliminating Tehran's military threats. Indeed, Iran still possess operational capabilities that are ready for use. Rather than merely constituting a, a theoretical stockpile. Furthermore, according to intelligence reports, Iran has successfully ensured that the continued launch of missiles and drones by adopting a launch and relocate tactics and by storing its military assets in tunnels and caves that have been under construction and equipped over the course of decades. On the naval front, the assessment revealed that a significant proportion of Iran's cruise missiles and winged projectiles remain intact, particularly those designated for coastal defense, and that the Iranians remain poised to sow chaos throughout the region and, and, and, uh, threaten maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. This intelligence report concluded that the Trump administration's talk of setting a 2-week timeline for ending military operations is unrealistic. His deputy spokesperson asserts that Sinan's anonymous source are attempting to distort the achievements of the US military and are deliberately, or deliberately attacking President Trump. Citing figures echoed by Trump and his team. She stated that the United States and Israel have succeeded in significantly degrading Iranian capabilities, effectively wiping its naval forces out of existence, and have established absolute air superiority over Iranian skies. This has resulted in a 90% reduction in missile and drones attacks. The Department of Defense has also weighed in. Its spokesperson maintained that CNN's report is erroneous and that Operation Epic Fury has to date destroyed over 12,000 military targets and eliminated key leadership. That's, that's exactly what he's saying over there. Regarding Iran, the Pentagon— the, the translation continues here— the, the Pentagon spokesperson indicated that operations within the country have achieved significant progress ahead of schedule and have extensively destroyed Iranian capabilities. And it became clear to you after you saw that clip there, it became clear that the Trump administration is lying, the Pentagon is lying. And this is why the Pentagon, the, the Secretary of Defense end up firing 10 generals. Among them is Rodney George, a 4-star general. Rodney George, by the way, he is one of the key generals specialized in ground operations, and his assessment was saying forget about it. So what they did, they yanked him out of position, forcing him to early retirement. Other generals took stand and stepped forward and said that General George was right. They end up being fired also, which is shame on, on, on the administration. Those people, those generals— not people— those generals have credibility and credentials. What does Trump have? The guy who dodged the military, by the way, and is inherently a liar. I have to say it. I can't sugarcoat that one. So, and this is where when they saying we obliterated the naval and we took over the skies— no, you didn't. You didn't. It's because the American nightmare, especially now with the issue of the pilot, that's what the sheepherders inside Iran chased the F-35 pilot that was shot down. In addition to the F-15. And this is again, I'm gonna play the second clip, then I'll continue with my own analysis and conclude this for you. Let's, uh, let me share the screen here. Just bear with me here a second, please. There we go. What we looking at here? Uh, this is talking about the downing of the F-35 and explaining few other aspects of it. So I'm gonna just let it play out, but I'll do translation only for the first literally, uh, 2 minutes or so because I have other stuff to cover. So here is what it starts with. We are speaking of 1.2 million combatants distributed among the special forces the, the, uh, the IRGC and the Basij mobilization forces, in addition to human waves of civilian volunteers who at this very moment have begun streaming in to register their names and participate in the defense of the Iranian territory. Add to this Iranian, uh, islands, specifically Qeshm Island, which we mentioned earlier along with other islands situated in the southern and Gulf waters. These islands are not merely tourist resorts; they are fortified, floating military platforms. Iran has issued a clear statement, a bloody message leaving no room for misinterpretation: An amphibious landing operation will transform the soil of these islands into graveyards for Americans. Where do we currently stand in this deadly game? Donald Trump issues threats, the IRGC shoots down the pride of the US Air Force, Israel bleeds under the shrapnel of cluster munition, and the Pentagon devours its own ranks, dismissing its generals. Some in Washington indeed, many question Trump's narrative. They ask, if we are not losing aircraft, why are U.S. emergency and medical drones crisscrossing the skies over the Indian Ocean and the southern Gulf with such intensity? If no incident has occurred, why all this mobilization at sea? Voices are rising within the United States calling for a halt to this war. They argue that the Iranians have taken no action that directly threatens America's security. Why then should we entangle ourselves in the wars of others, specifically Israel? The economic factor has begun to play its part. Any talk of Iran seizing control of the Strait of Hormuz signifies one thing. The strangulation of the world energy arteries. Should this conflict persist, we will be facing not merely the destruction of military bases but fuel prices that would scorch economies, a global economic recession, and the alienation of Washington's allies, all of which, all of which would erode America's standing and diminish its capacity to exert influence on the international stage, which, if I may add, it's already dead. Just as Senator Chuck Schumer and others warned, which by the way, they are the same coin, two faces of the same coin. Democrats or Republicans are the same. These nightmare hours will be very long. Dawn may bring with it an escalation. What will the ultimate outcome be? Will Trump swallow his pride in the wake of the F-35 downing and come to the negotiating table? Or will he act recklessly, driven by the Secretary of Defense who has purged the Pentagon of its wise counsel, and others, or an order of ground invasion that throws open the gates of hell? And can Tel Aviv endure another night of cluster munition raining down from skies that the Iron Dome proved powerless to defend? These are many questions, yet it is blood, fire, and steel that are currently writing the answers on the ground. We're here, we not sleep. We are here, we'll not sleep, we will remain with you moment by moment, the chronicle of your either end of the world we have known or the birth of a new global order rising from amidst the rubble. We previously left you with the news of the downing of an American F-35 stealth fighter deep within Iran in, in Markazi province. However, the urgent field detail we have just received transformed this scene from a mere aircraft downing into a truly cinematic manhunt, one currently unfolding amidst Iran's rugged mountains and valleys. I'm going to stop right here, uh, because it's too long here. I just wanted to highlight to you that aspect for you to see Exactly what the administration is saying and lying about it, and what the current reality is, even through the report of the IC, the intelligence community right here in the US. I applaud them for doing the right thing. You know, we don't— at least I don't know, I don't speak for others, I speak for myself. During my career and my days and times in the military or whatever. I, I wasn't working on behalf of the president. I don't give a damn about the president. It was on behalf of the American people. But on the other hand, if we are to engage in a war, it has to be a war that for our own interest. And second, nobody has threatened our country, so why are we getting involved? It's not our war. Simple as that. Some next videos I'm going to be doing for you next time, not now. I'm going to be talking, I'm going to be talking to you about really the true, uh, losses of the American in, in both weapons and troops. Why not disclosing the truth? That's, that's— I'm gonna I'm gonna be sharing this with you some other thing. So here's the thing— some other time, rather. Here is the bigger picture. We are looking now at a shifting order. Uh, sorry, I got distracted here a little bit. I'm sorry. Uh, the 2026 war reveals a broader Let me just— I'm sorry, I get distracted. There was some noise. The 2026 war reveals a broader now shift in the global order, especially now when you have the, uh, the presence of the Russians, the Chinese, and maybe the North Korean. Especially, I know for a fact that the, the Russian, uh, presence is by having nuclear subs in near Iranian borders. And this is not a return, by the way, this change is not a return to the so-called a US-centered system. No, no more. Not a fully developed multipolar balance either, but rather what you have is some sort of a fragmented landscape where major powers right now, regional players, like the Gulf States, which they are finding out the truth, and smaller states that now seek advantages through this, uh, what do I use the term, selective alliances, limited. They want— the Gulf States now wanted limited escalations and of course compartmentalized crisis management. And that is exactly where we are. So Iran alone, Iran alone, almost certainly not. We know this. One thing that I know for a fact, if we are to talk about the dominance of the US and Israel in the region, as I said earlier, the end of this dominance is going to be at the hand of Iran. But we're not talking today Because Iran alone at this moment will not be able to end this dominance. But the war is exposing the limits of the military dominance of the US and Israel. Israel now is foregone, uh, it's done for. And as a matter of fact, do you hear anything about Israel? Why? Because they succeeded in pulling the US into the war, step back, Because which soldiers are fighting? Not the Israelis, the Americans. And the costs are enormous for both the US and Israel. For us here, about $2 billion a day. And the endgame is unclear, by the way. So what you are saying, what you are seeing right now and witnessing is that you have the regional alliances now that they are fraying. You have— even a global order that is shifting somehow. Forget about the US. I hope the countries in Asia will learn something. Philippines, like I talked this morning with my guest Professor Anna Mandok. I hope Japan is learning from this. South Korea, Australia. I even found out that some politicians inside Taipei in Taiwan are really now rethinking— not all of them, But some politicians in, in KMT party are really rethinking because they are seeing what's going on, you know, what, what, what, what happened when you have US military presence on your, on your territory and a war breaks out. So the greater risk for the US and Israeli dominance, it's not going to come just through Iran's missiles. No, no, no, but from the political, from the economic, and also from the diplomatic fallout of the war itself. And this is why you have now the US is hoping— yeah, I'm telling you, the US is hoping that Iran will agree to at least starting to have some conversations. This morning I got a hold of information pertaining to this aspect. I'm not going to say much about it because I have to verify that information, and if I found out it's true, then I'll do a live stream for you. But for now, Trump is truly looking for a way out. He's realizing that he's been played. He's been made a fool of, not only because of the, uh, being humiliated by his own intel experts but rather because of the truth that is coming out to the surface. That is where the difference. And that's exactly what I remember the last clip I showed you when Iran targeted— as a matter of fact, Iran targeted, uh, destroyed an Israeli drone factory. That's the image of it you are seeing here. It was only sold 48 hours ago. I kid you not, 48 hours after it was sold, it was destroyed by Iranian missile. I'm going to show you, I'm going to show you an imagery, satellite imagery of the same factory prior to being attacked. Right there, this is— it says right there in Arabic, Masna al-Musayyarat al-Mustahdaf, the targeted drone factory. It's right here again, once destroyed. And this is why the US administration, Donald Trump, issued an order yesterday morning. And you know what the order is? There is a company, public company, it's not a private, doesn't belong to the government, that deals with the satellite imageries. Now Trump administration issued an order for the company not to release any images. And that is part of what I'm going to be talking to you in the next live stream about the, the, the real damages to the American side, both in weapons and the troops, showing the images. Of course, the US couldn't ban the Chinese factory, which is the Chinese— I'm sorry, uh, company that released some satellite images, which is headquartered in, uh, in Shanghai. I talked about it last time because it's a foreign company. America has no right whatsoever. And that is what, as a matter of fact, with all Iran's missiles and deadly precision, it's because China was providing these coordinates through the satellite images, and the US can't do squat about it. It's the reality. So here is my conclusion for you, because I want to keep this short, to the point, and I'm going to go, uh, work on the other stories for you and prepare them for the rest of the week here. So what started as some sort of a bold military strike, okay, because that's how it started, sold to the American people as a, as a, oh, it's going to be swift, it's going to be decisive, and it's going to be necessary, has now revealed itself by something far more complicated. Because the harsh reality is this: The US, uh, the US and Israel dealt a serious blow, especially Israel. If you know the amount of destruction inside Tel Aviv, inside Haifa, Shemesh, Ben Gurion Airport, Haifa oil refineries, and so forth, and if you see those images, you will think this is Gaza. But again, because there is a media blackout on that. And this, uh, major blow to the US and Israel and the other vassal states that are hosting American bases, including Jordan, including United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia. Uh, it's legitimate targets. And this is where when you have the Americans saying, okay, We damaged Iran's nuclear facilities. We degraded its proxy network built over decades. But 5 weeks since the war started, half of Iran's missiles still intact.
Half.
Half. And, and once again, the Strait of Hormuz remain closed and under the control of Iran. The oil prices are hammering everyday Americans. And the president of the United States, Donald Trump, has no shame whatsoever, has been watching 2-minute highlights, reels, instead of receiving hard intelligence briefing. What kind of president is that? Iran cannot I mean, let's just put the facts on the table. If there is in the conventional sense, will Iran defeat the US? No, we all know that. But Iran is shrewd and smart enough that it knows conventionally you're not going to want to match the US that way. No, no, no, there are other ways. As it says in Arabic, al-harb khuda. War is treasury. That's the way it is. But at the same time, it's now became clear that the US and Israeli military machines will not withstand long fight. Because every day this war continues, it cost Americans billions. Once again, to my knowledge, as of yesterday, $2 billion a day. Most Americans might not even know this. Then you have the fracturing of regional alliances. Then you have the isolation of the US and Israel on the world stage, which, by the way, chips away from the very dominance that the US went in at the beginning of the war. Oh, it's gonna be quick. The most dangerous wars at least in my, in, in my research, in my reading, in my experience and so forth, are not always the one you lose on the battlefield. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. They are the ones you win militarily but lose politically, economically, and historically. And this one is one of those wars. History Mike, my word on it, if I happen to be alive for the next 50 years— I doubt it, but it won't matter— next 50 years, when we read the history, it's going to be mentioned in this, that the US, despite its military might, was unable, unable to defeat Iran. That is the key reality I need you to understand and get out of this live stream. So the question was never really whether Iran could destroy America or Israel. No, no, no, no. That's what Iran did is to let them know, you know, we are not going to be intimidated. We are not what you might think: Venezuela, Cuba, Iraq, Afghanistan. No, no, no, no, no. That is exactly what the response of Iran means. Was Iran— is Iran want to destroy Israel? Yeah, it's good if it want to, because Israel alone face to face with Iran stand no chance. We all know this. No other country in the region, and even the US itself, will have to end up resolving to using the nukes, tactical ones, if it has to, to defeat Iran. But the real question is whether this war is quietly destroying the credibility treasury and moral authority that made the US and Israel dominance possible in the first place. As geopolitical analyst, I'll be thinking in those terms because what this is going to do the next decade, 2, 3, 4, or even 5 decades. And the harsh reality, once again, if America is spending 2 billion a day. Iran still has half of its missiles. The Strait of Hormuz once again is closed and under the control of Iran. And Trump, Mr. Trump, is watching reels instead of intelligence briefing. So at what point— really, we're gonna ask— at what point does winning the war actually means losing everything else? So make sure to drop me your, your thoughts about this one here. And before I leave you, I'm gonna play clips for you as promised, because that's what I do. So I'm gonna start with the first one, and, and those are not, uh, those are not, uh, I'm going to show you under translation, uh, uh, as, as you see it. Uh, this one here is, is an urgent message from the head of the Iranian— basically what he's saying— oh, I'm sorry, I didn't show the clip, but I, I'll play it for you tomorrow. Basically what he was saying is that in the case of the, uh, US, uh, uh, bringing its troops, he's urging— meaning the commander is urging— no Americans stay alive. That's, that's, that's a chilling— I, I will use the term chilling message. Let me play the next clip. And the next clip has to do with images, and I'm going to share it here, images of the targeting of Aramco. You all know Aramco, the, the oil company in, in Saudi Arabia. And by the way, Aramco is not a private company. No, no, Aramco is the, is the monarchy's company. It just has the name Aramco, whatever. In reality, Aramco belongs to the monarchy of Saudi Arabia. So I'm going to show you a clip when it was, uh, targeted. I'm gonna silence it because I think he has a clip on it.
No.
Oh, sorry. Yeah, let me start it from, from the beginning here so you see. And, and by the way, I have to pause this just to, to tell you two things about this picture. Uh, hold on, let me put it back up here. Uh, two, two things. If you look at the top left side where it says Saudi Arabia, it says the date right there. That's April 2nd— April, uh, I'm sorry, it's, uh, March 2nd, 2026, right? Few days after the war started. And in Arabic right here it says, in you— this is a new clips for the moment of the targeting by Iran of the oil refineries of the Aramco company. And I give credit to almeshed.com. That's their video there. So I just want you to see that. Okay, let me, uh, share the next clip. The next clip has to do with this individual. You will, you will recognize who he is. I'm not gonna play the sound because it has some soundtrack, and, but I will do the translation for you. And in the same picture with him is Joe Kent. Joe Kent, the guy who just retired He is the, uh, he was the head of the counterterrorism. Joe Kent is a former special ops guy. But here is what it says on that particular clip. It says, you know who that is, right? That's Zulani, the terrorist Zulani, uh, the interim president of Syria. And what it says in Arabic, the head of the counterterrorism American the former head of the counterterrorism, Joe Kent, he's stating Washington is the one that has established Daesh, okay, which is the terrorist groups, is the one that has armed Al-Qaeda to protect Israel, and we have provided Zulani Syria when he was in our jails. Daesh or ISIS, it's an American-made with Gulf State money and Arab fighters. That's powerful. That's very powerful coming from a guy was the head of the counterterrorism. So, and the last clip I want to— actually, two more clips. No, no, yes, one last clip, uh, uh, I want to play with you, uh, for you rather. This is from an American Syrian writer. I, I'm aware of her when I used to be in DC. She's a— she's, uh, she has credibility. She's been around, uh, uh, of— she's of Syrian descent, but she's an American. Her name is Hala Gorani. So I'm gonna play a clip. It's in English because she, she speaks— she doesn't speak Arabic, she speaks English, to my knowledge, unless she never— and, uh, yeah, let me share the clip and I'll let you take a listen because it's in English, as I said.
Iran back into the Stone Ages where it belongs. Listening to the US president yesterday threaten to bomb Iran back into the stone ages where it belongs reminded me of past American leaders who've cast the cultures and civilizations of the Middle East in ways that suggest that it's a part of the world that somehow lacks civilizational foundations. Trump also once called the region a long bloodstained land. And it reminded me of the many times I've heard the Middle East described using clichés and stereotypes similar to that one. Like when it was reported that Donald Rumsfeld once called Arabs lazy because they had too much oil, or when Arabs are often described as rejectionists who are offered great deals but say no to them simply because they are just inherently violent people. What Palestinian writer Edward Said once called reductively simplifying and confining models of the region, even among intellectuals. And it's only gotten worse in the past few years. There's a Texas representative named Keith Self. He serves on the Foreign Affairs Committee. He said, while Western civilization has evolved, Islam has not. Islam is stuck in the 8th century. The South Carolina senator Lindsey Graham, who recently urged Israel to flatten Gaza the way the Allies flattened Dresden, told an AIPAC meeting a few years ago that anything that starts with the word al in the Middle East is bad news. Al meaning the in Arabic, it literally means the. Did you forget algebra or alchemy or maybe what brought you to this video, algorithm? Maybe it's worth reminding people as bombs fall that Iran and the wider Middle East are a part of the world that has produced so much of what Western civilization later adopted and relied on. Maybe politicians like Randy Fine of Florida who would choose a dog over a Muslim have heard of Rumi, or more precisely, Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī, the 13th-century Persian-language poet whose quotes appear in so many social media bios. Or Arab numerals, so-called because literal Arabs refined Indian numbers 400 years before they ever hit Europe. Now, no one is saying the Middle East doesn't have issues. Postcolonialism has produced autocratic systems and nation-state borders that were drawn up by European powers, created religious that erupt whenever there are destabilizing forces, whether they come from abroad or they are internal. The issue is the notion that this region is backward, that it needs its wisdom imported from abroad, when like every part of the world, it too has contributed to human development in transformational ways, and that those who live there deserve the same safety, freedom and respect as anyone else.
